What a wonderful voice, Linda Ronstadt. Rich, thick, muscular tone with dynamic emotion in phrasing and knowledge of this 1950s Era of lush big band jazz arrangement. Thank you for giving us just one in many of her vocal treats as Ronstadt was the leading female singer for three decades.

To me, Linda is the female version of Freddie Mercury. She could sing anything and sang everything. She did what she wanted, not necessarily what was popular. She was a trailblazer. She sang rock, pop, jazz, Spanish and opera.

Man .... I loved her voice back in the 70s when I was in college when she was on top of the charts. And her being so cute was icing on the cake. She's said she was getting bored doing her folk, rock, and country, so she decided to venture out in other genres. She had been so financially successful, it gave her the liberty to do whatever she wanted. Broadway, operettas, spanish, jazz, roots, etc. .... she and her voice could sing any genre well.

Disagree with you Karen. I admire Freddie Mercury, but the ease of reaching a high tone from a chilling mood, Freddie can't do that. He has to work hard to hit every high note. Linda was from a multi-cultural house where music was the glue that held the family together. Her father and grandfather were Mexican-American, her mom anglo with a love for show tunes and operetta, and she was exposed to Country and Western having grown up in Tucson, Arizona. In other words, she was a product of America. This is what our country does best- taking the best of all the cultures that were drawn to our shores and come up with a blend that is something entirely new. As Keith Richards said in 1964 when asked who his influences were, he said why the black blues musicians in the USA of course.

Noted mainly for her rock and country rock albums....Was friends with several of the guys in The Eagles and I believe she wrote some songs with them. This album came about because she loved the old American Standards catalogue of the Big Band era and wanted to do some of that music to bring it to light again. Streisand did this as well as Bette Midler Listen to Bette Midler sing The Rose. Gorgeous. This was recorded with the entire orchestra. I would bet you that it only took one or two takes, as I’ve heard so many stories about these sessions. When you have skills at that level, that’s what you can do. And I’m afraid that’s why so many folks my age are so disdainful of so many current “artists”. Linda is a lovely soul, and it is so terribly sad that she can no longer sing because, I believe, of M.S.

React to her Live performance of "Blue Bayou" if you want a treat. Linda got bored with winning Grammys for Pop Music so she decided to do The Standards then she moved on to Latin albums. Huge sales in every genre she did. Platinum upon platinum. One critic said she was TOO perfect. That her notes were so precise that it was jarring. She's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well. Sadly she has a medical condition that affected her voice and had to retire early.

You picked up on something that made this so wonderful in that, yes, we had these great songs from the 30's 40's, but they were thin recordings. But by the late 50's, Hi-Fi was invented. Meaning, it was now possible to record sound EXACTLY. Linda gathered not just the old songs, but Nelson Riddle and people who really knew how to play these songs and let us hear these, for the first time, how they really sounded LIVE. Like you were on the soundstage of those tinny recordings we heard in the old movies. And now it is here forever!

At this point in her career, she was already #1 in the 70s, 80s winning several Grammy Awards in different genres. But, as the true artist she is she WANTED to do this album of standards and didn't care if it made money or not. This not only went platinum she won a Grammy for this one! She and Nelson made another album of standards. Linda won over so many new fans...those from the 40s, 50s hearing "their music" again...from this FABULOUS performer. It is sad now she can't sing, but what an influence she has made in her career.

Linda is big leagues as far as vocalists go, you are absolutely correct. Like Karen Carpenter, Linda's voice is like a gut punch when you hear it, because it is so much better than almost anything you will ever hear. Linda could sing anything, as mentioned in other comments: folk, country, rock, pop, standards, Mexican, and even Gilbert & Sullivan. I was 17 years old when this niche album came out, and not only was the album an unexpected huge hit, but all of the songs grabbed my soul. I had heard tons of Linda in the 70's, and maybe it was an intersection of her hitting her vocal peak at the same time that I became mature enough to appreciate it, but THIS album is still one of my all-time favorites. Mad Love is pretty awesome, too. Check out How Do I Make You, and I Can't Let Go to hear a couple of great pop/rock songs, and You're No Good for a song that really put her on the map in the early 70s. Different Drum with the Stone Ponys is also great. Linda is one of those female artists with a deep catalogue to explore, so enjoy the journey!

There was a period (in the 80s or 90s I think) when several different female pop/rock singers decided to explore the standards in the old style of singing and production.
