Linda Ronstadt was a power house of a country and rock vocalist. Thanks for your review of You're No Good. Before her Parkinsons diagnosis, Linda could belt out anything with a full-throttle, rich and clear voice.

Linda Ronstadt and the Stone ponies was her first group, consisting of Linda Ronstadt on vocals, Bobby Kimmel on rhythm guitar and vocals, and Kenny Edwards on lead guitar. Their recordings include Ronstadt's first hit song, a cover of Mike Nesmith's "Different Drum". Yes that's the Mike Nesmith that was on the Monkeys.

This performance was from late 1973, a couple years after Glenn Frey and Don Henley flew the coop to form the Eagles. Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter is on congas, Andrew Gold on guitar, Kenny Edwards on bass, and Richie Heyward on drums. I don't know the names of the ladies singing backup.

Bongos are small drums held between the legs. The large drums are generally referred to as conga drums. It is so sad that Linda Rhonstadt's magnificent voice is forever silenced by Parkinsons Disease. The outstanding female voice of the 70s and into the 80s.

Linda could sing anything from all kind of music genres. This is just wonderful hard hitting straight up rock and roll. The Midnight Special was weekly viewing for me. So, Glenn Frey and Don Henley were asked to tour with her back in 1971. They roomed together on the tour and decided they wanted to start a band of their own. They talked to Linda and her producer about it, and Linda was very helpful in getting them started. She also knew Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner and suggested they get them in the band. There is some great footage of her singing with the Eagles on the "Rock Concert." Her version of "Desperado" is what most of us know, and they did this great version of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles." She is just great.

Linda's backing band for this Midnight Special episode was part Linda's touring band and part added players and singers for the her television performance. It is not the Eagles, who just shortly, 2 years before You're No Good was released, were actually the supporting players that she recorded and toured with nationally after Linda discovered Don Henley, Glen Frey, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon, the original Eagles band in Los Angeles.

Linda Ronstadt is an all around singer in any genre, and proved it over and over again with many Grammys. Rock , Country, folk music, light opera, big band, Mariachi type music, she did it all. You're No Good is only the tip of the iceberg. when young she took many voice lessons, her whole family was traditionally very musical in Tucson AZ. she was much more musical...dynamics [loud, medium soft), vibrato, phrasing and breath support, no screaming, and good tone quality.

The girl in the gold outfit singing backup and dancing is Clydie King. She was also one of the backup singers on Lynyrd Skynyrd's hit record, "Sweet Home Alabama". The other woman is Sherlie Matthews. She was a former Motown singer and also did session work as a backup singer. The drummer is Richie Hayward of the band, Little Feat. Bongos was Jeff Baxter of The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. And as has already been mentioned by another poster the lead guitar was the great Andrew Gold. He played lead guitar on many of her early hit records. He also had his own hit songs with "Thank you For Being A Friend" and "Lonely Boy". Bass was Kenny Edwards, one of the founding members of Linda's early band "The Stone Ponys". The keyboard player is John Boylan who produced many big acts including, Ricky Nelson, The Association, Pure Prairie league among others, He also produced Boston's first album. Quite an impressive and talented group on that stage!

This song came out in 1974 while in was still in college in San Jose, Ca. I met her along with Jerry Brown, who she was dating at the time, on my college campus. Jerry was running for Governor of Ca. at the time. I recall thinking how beautiful she was. She already had the voice of an angel. "You're No Good" was a great choice for your next Linda Ronstadt song to react to. While she had many top 10 hits, this was her only #1 on the pop charts. What I loved so much about Linda is that she had such an incredible voice that could sing any style or music genre. The next Linda Ronstadt song that I would recommend you react to is "It's So Easy". The Eagles began in early 1971, when Linda Ronstadt and her manager John Boylan recruited local musicians Glenn Frey and Don Henley for her band. Henley had moved to Los Angeles from Texas and Frey had come from Michigan. They had met in 1970 at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon later joined Ronstadt's group of performers for her summer tour promoting the Silk Purse album. Ronstadt began singing YOU'RE NO GOOD in 1973 to end her shows. Linda recorded the song in 1974 on her breakthrough album HEART LIKE A WHEEL. The song was a last minute addition to the album. Interestingly, Ronstadt had signed with Asylum Recorded and HEART LIKE A WHEEL was a contractual obligation to Capitol Records. It became Ronstadt first #1 album and sent her fame into the stratosphere. Give a listen to HURT SO BAD. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3q7m2eHd8qqY84

I think it was Glen Frey and Don Henley of the Eagles that rented rooms from her before they were famous. And I think she introduced them and encouraged them to form a band. I think they played on some of her songs. One morning she said she left home and when she returned that evening, they had written Tequila Sunrise or something. This came from an interview with her. I'd have to check to confirm. Tons of music history here including Jackson Browne and J.D. Souther.

You guys should try a react to Linda covering the Rolling Stones classic Tumbling Dice. She stays true to the intent on the original while putting her own spin on it as always. It seriously rivals Mick's best performances of the song. Also her lead tour guitarist Waddy Wachtel is a legend. He did studio work with every major artist of the day and could play anything and do it well. Linda was such a hippie chick back then. She often appeared barefoot in early concerts or in cowboy boots (Arizona gal who grew up in ranch country). She was the best, never pretentious or showcased her voice just to show off. Just sang the song and used her power to emphasize the music.

So many big names in this band for this performance. I won't go into each one's fame. But the lead guitarist with the red hair and beard is one of may favorites, the late Andrew Gold. He was Linda's band leader at that time and a multi-talented, multi instrumentalist and successful songwriter. He had a couple of hit songs himself later on. "Lonely Boy" and "Thank You For Being A Friend' (which was later used as the theme song for the TV show, The Golden Girls)

Here's a way different Linda Rondstadt suggestion for you.. In the 1980s Linda teamed with the famous 1950s Arranger Nelson Riddle for 3 phenominal and very successful albums of Old Jazz Standards from the 1930s-1950s. Her first big hit from the first album was called "What's New" and it blew everybody away that she could have such a Big Pop Hit from a 1950s song arranged with a Retro Feel to it!! These albums have gone collectible now.. All of the songs on all 3 albums are Materpieces.

Hello, you 2 sweet, lovely ladies 😉. No, this was definitely NOT the group, Eagles. The guy playing the congas (Me Steve ... remember, congas big, bongos smaller) is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, a very talented, long-time, multi-instrumentalist and session musician, founding member of Steely Dan, then a member of the Doobie Brothers and finally, the group Spirit. He continued on in, around and after those groups, once again, as a session musician ... and for TONS of bands. He has also worked more recently as a defense consultant and has advised U.S. members of Congress on missile defense. That that is also Andrew Gold playing the lead guitar here, a musician who also came out later as a solo artist with some very popular hits, 2 of which were Lonely Boy (1977) and Thank You for Being a Friend (1978, used also as the opening theme for, "The Golden Girls"). He died in 2011 (age 59) in his sleep from heart failure.

@@generationgapreacts Linda's golden pipes were such a guaranteed money maker that she always could get fabulous backup and musicians in her band, even though there was turnover. If you go to that amazing Midnight Express video, scroll down carefully, you can find a post from a seemingly very knowledgeable guy who names each person in the video and describes how they're all luminaries in their field. Both women, Atlanta -based r&b singers, cut their own albums and we're in high demand. The guitarist, Andrew Gold, started his own act not long after this. I still remember a great single he did, c.'77, "Lonely Boy." Sadly, he died rather early. I forget the rest but it was impressive. And speaking of Linda "belting it out (and that's a perfect description of her gift... being able to all but tell and it comes out GOLD)," catch her in center field at Dodger Stadium, '83, BELTING OUT the notoriously difficult Nat'l Anthem. Amazing...and done, as you say here so astutely, "effortlessly." Also, great performance with The Eagles on yr, "Silver Thread, Golden...(?), c. mid-70s. Linda apparently was in the Eagles at one time. And catch her as a REALLY young woman, barefoot, on the Johnny Cash Show. Stunning stuff. Thx.

At first I was a bit bummed by this being the live version, but I quickly remembered who we're dealing with here. Linda CAN SING... Like, for real. This format gave you the full, authentic voice. A lot of The Midnight Special clips are less than stellar; it was a show that came on late, obviously, and seems like most of the performers were more interested in partying than in putting on their best performance. Plus, the sound quality is usually outdated. But it definitely gives you a "slice of the 70s" with the hair and clothes, etc. I think I recommended the documentary, The Sound of my Voice, on the Blue Bayou video, but I'm going to stick with it. It'll give you that whole Eagles association backstory. This band is not the Eagles, as others have pointed out. But Andrew Gold on guitar was fantastic, and had quite the career of his own. you guys should check out "Oh What A Lonely Boy," by him one of these days. It's such a weird 70s hit, with such a unique story. It's like a bit of psycho analysis, just checking out his family dynamics in the lyrics, lol.

Can’t find enough superlative adjectives to describe this woman’s talent. Everything she touched was made better by her voice. I would love to see you react to her live performance of “Down So Low”. It’s amazing. She definitely leaves her soul on the stage! Love your videos. Those are Congas drums you were wondering about. 🌺✌️

No one has told you yet, so l will. If you want to hear some great harmonies, listen to Linda singing with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris. Thet did 2 albums called, "Trio" & "Trio 2". It doesn't matter what song you pick because every song is great. They sound beautiful together!

She was so popular with many big hits but the one that really excels for me is one that she co wrote for the movie The Secret Garden. Who would have thought of Linda singing soprano. Check out the song, Winter Light.

Looks like Don Felder on guitar here, can anyone tell me ? Of course with the Eagles connection yeah, but he wasn't in the band then. I know they all hang out and new of each other, so it makes for a possible connection. This is her band after Glenn and Don had formed the eagles . Cheers from Down Under 🤘😎🤘

Oh, about the Eagles & Linda. Yes they were here backing band for a while until she convinced them that they should go out on their own. (They are grateful to her, to this day in interviews). By the time of "You're no Good" the Eagles were stars themselves. On their second album in 1973, the Eagles wrote "Desperado" and sent it to Linda as a "thank you". She recorded her cover of it and it became a big hit...in fact today it is remembered as one of the Eagles best songs..yet according to Don Henley it wasn't a hit until Linda made it one. This is one of the only videos that I know of with Linda & the Eagles together, performing Desperado. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHWlZ6SHoqmcb7s

Eagles members were her band for a short period but that is not them on this. Andrew Gold ,known for the song Lonely Boy is the guitar player in the band . .Linda was the highest paid female entertainer in the 1970s .. / CONGOS ,, Bongos are very small

You need to listen to the HBO concert she did in 1980 of this song. It's a much mature Linda. It's just great.

The Eagles formed in 1971, so Ronstadt's backup band in this video is not the Eagles. The lead guitarist in this video is Andrew Gold, who can play just about anything and worked with Ronstadt for years. Her version of "Heat Wave" has Gold playing everything except the bass... and it is excellent: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJ24eWdmj6qMkNE

Another great Ronstadt/Jimmy Webb collaboration is EASY FOR YOU TO SAY. Released in 1983 a 35 year old Linda couldn't be any cuter! This was an appearance on Johnny Carson. Hey Momma Gap remember when late night TV hosts were funny and talented? kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3iQfmqFqrBqgrs

I prefer the studio versions, but when the performer is as talented as Linda Ronstadt, it ain't too much of a disappointment.

I think the future Eagle members she helped get together were session musicians when she went to record her early stuff. Her band before "Stone Ponies" was crap! She more or less helped "The Eagles' get together , and I believe she is the only one who got the rights to record The Eagles "Desperado" which should be reacted to.
