I found key to interviewing is to level the playing field. Your evaluating the company as much as they are evaluating you - Are they something you want to be apart of. Biggest mistake I see interviewers making is appearing too hungry for job. They can sense that. Make the interview what it is designed to be which is two adults having a meeting of the minds and deciding if its a good fit for both of you.
@elisabethschlarb30594 жыл бұрын
Ooh can I comment on the energy one and feeling nervous: So it may have to do with YOU, but it may also have to do with the person who is interviewing you. I have had interviews where *they* were really stressy and dominant which is not the type of leadership I respond well to, and as a result, I got really nervous, even though I'm normally quite calm in interviews. If this happens to you, don't blame yourself for "screwing up," and rather consider that it wasn't a good fit for you after all and that you may have dodged a bullet if that person would have been your manager.

Hi Linda! Your interview tips have helped me immensely!!! Interviews I have always felt are unnatural and artificial but albeit necessary to screen potential candidates for a role. Hiring managers don't know you are fully qualified and are able to add value to their company unless you clearly convey that to them. I was an accounting major in college and I was always unable to land an internship offer, because of my apparently ineffective interview skills. I did over 15 interviews for an accounting internship in college and I failed every time! After each rejection 1-3 days subsequent to the interview, I felt like an extreme loser. To add salt to the wound, additionally, I graduated last Spring during the crux of the COVID-19 pandemic that has acted as a serious detriment to recent college graduates looking for a full-time position in their field. After discovering your KZbin channel and applying the key advice and interviewing tips you offer, I was finally able to land the proverbial elusive accounting position I always wanted! Linda, you deserve a million bucks or kisses lol :-D Thank you so much!!!

@zaynes50943 ай бұрын
I always am nervous in interviews no matter how much I prepare but I always felt going into interviews and saying straight out that I'm a shy person and so I'm a bit nervous because of that, that actually has helped me get through to that hiring person that I'm not a bad communicator. I just am very shy. But once I get into the main parts of the interview, I am very slow-talking and really try to enunciate and just stay focused on the job itself.

Hello Linda! So number 1 and 2 hit me very hard, but number 4 MAY be the answer to my question for not ever passing interviews. Last week, I had an interview for a PhD programme and (obviously) I failed it again. In this interview, they asked me questions in which only 1 was a standard question, the rest were all either "how would you..." questions or "give me an example of..." questions. I have a disastrous disadvantage in these kinds of questions because of 3 reasons: 1. I can almost NEVER remember anything from my past. 2. I can only memorise something and keep it in mind for max 1 week then I forget it. 3. They always ask for details and I cannot dive deeper into the example because I cannot remember it at all - all I remember from the example is that I made it and succeeded, aka the Outcome ONLY. As for the technical questions they ask, I have a problem conveying my technical knowledge into simple explanations and can only recite the information as its written on the paper or article that I read - explaining it into my own words completely beats me. Also, I can only express myself well in writing only - verbally I mumble a lot. Is there any advice that you can give me in this aspect or explain to me what is this problem of mine called? I accept any advice and theory from everyone! Thank you very much!
@justask.myname Жыл бұрын
I have the same issue also with myself! I too can only express myself well through writing but have a hard time conveying my thoughts through words. Hope anyone can answer her question.
@danrichards9823 Жыл бұрын
for this you ccan simply memorise it it often. Go over it daily or at least a few times before the interview. Speak out loud, record yourself, or get a friend or job coach to listen to you talk about such things.
@matthew_kiely Жыл бұрын
Maybe you could apply for jobs that you are over qualified for, it may be a lower salary but choose companies with a good career path where you can be promoted and tell them that you want to move ahead in the company, they may even offer you a higher position. it will also mean you are more confident about getting the job. (b) Write down notes on typical questions at interviews, read and rehearse, think of it as an audition work hard on being prepared. (c) tell them you are nervous at interviews but once you get to know your co-workers and senior staff members you feel you can communicate more freely. (d) promote your strengths [see(b)} and sell yourself.
@DrJonTam4 жыл бұрын
Great advice! The best way to demonstrate your value in the interview is to use the STAR formula to illustrate your job skills with examples. 1. Start with the S (Situation) and break down the context. 2. Move on to the T (Task), which is the task you were assigned to at the time. 3. Explain your A (action) and what you did by exhibiting hard and soft skills. 4. Close with R (result), by outlining the result and the value you brought. By doing this, you convey to the interviewer you’re good at what you do, you know what you’re doing, and you can bring the same value to them in the future if they hire you.

@lira50763 жыл бұрын
Hi! I am in the same place as you are, I am very introverted. My best advice would be to just remember to be polite and kind. Just remember that they are not there to dismiss you, they are there to get to know you. Focus on your manners and if they ask you a question like “how are you today?”, return the question and say “I’m very well, thank you for asking. How are you? or if they say something about wrapping up the interview you can say “thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to interview with you today, I really appreciate it. I look forward to hearing from you. Have a nice rest of your day.” It’s okay to be introverted, but it’s also important that you don’t seem rude or standoffish. Hope that helps!

I am unemployed due to Covid-19. I have been searching for 5+ months for a job. At some point this is a game. We don't always have the choices to love every job we apply for. I am desperate to feed my family and survive. Wanting the job may be the last thing I'm worried about. When you are facing homelessness is always realistic to be so selective? I find it somewhat cynical. People are hurting during these trying times. Don't recruiters understand that? Very judgemental..

Tip nr 4 nailed it for me! I'm applying for a job that I don't have the complete set of necessary experience for, but I did get an invite for an interview. Your explanation of that the fact they invited you is proof that the requirements arent written in stone, gave me relief and confidence to go to the interview. I feel I can communicate more now about myself as a person, instead of trying to convince them to 'overlook' the mismatch in experience requirement. Thanks!

Just scored the best opportunity of my career with these tips! First six figure job with benefits in a field I actually enjoy! Showed my wife and she got an offer as well in the same day! These are some cheat codes right here. The next good piece of advice is always ask for 5k more for salary. Most any company can afford to do this, and if they are unwilling to participate in that conversation you dont wanna work there, because they don’t actually see you as a good fit and just have to hire anyone. But a job is a job! Depends on your needs

Bro this happened to me at Qdoba after a week lmao. They were like “you are always too alert and the other employees are falling behind you. Also we don’t want to schedule you because you have a few weeks you told us you couldn’t work before you were hired, but we didn’t look closely enough”.

Hej Linda, Thanks for this. I really like your "no bullshit" approach by telling us the hard truth when it comes to the value we can bring as a candidate. You really changed your voice tone and face expression here, showing your seriousness on this point, and the importance. Gave me a small chill and feeling of a piece of truth. I often feel like I don't have experience enough to apply to a job, as I am trying to go a slightly different path, but I will live by what you say when it comes to the interview. If the call came in, it must be for something that I can bring to the company :) Cheers!

How about technical skills? For example I’m interviewing for a job and they are looking for someone who can use photoshop, but I don’t know how to use photoshop. I do have the other skills but I’m worried if they ask me about it, and that I might lose the opportunity because I don’t have that one technical skill
@lancetravis29504 жыл бұрын
If the company is 'specifically' looking for a candidate with photoshop skills, then it's unlikely you'll get the job regardless of other skills you have. Look for a job that's right for you, something where you can demonstrate your skills needed to perform the job well. Read the job description and examine the core skills it requires.
@GoalInspiredCareerCoaching4 жыл бұрын
I did not see this before but you could have learnt photoshop before you attend the interview. If they did not see photoshop on your resume and invited you, it means that there is something in your experience that you liked so you should have taken massive action to learn it. It is like me learning Canva and iMovie and started my KZbin channel. I really wanted to do it myself so I took massive action and learnt it. Anyway I hope you had a good interview and demonstrated your willingness to learn.
@FyreSturmOfficial4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunatelty, Photoshop has a steep learning curve, especially in a professional business setting.
@GoalInspiredCareerCoaching4 жыл бұрын
@@FyreSturmOfficial Well: I believe that what she is saying here, if the skill is a technical skill and you do not have it and you cannot just learn it on your own, you may be at a disadvantage. However, I do not think it is that hard. Also, if it is a skill where you can use an alternative tool , then you say you have an alternative skills. Listen, I am a successful senior director of a staffing Company here in Ottawa and have been a recruiter for more than 15 years. I also just started a Channel of my own just to use it as a teaching platform. I know what I am talking about here. If they call you for an interview and you did not have the exact skill, there must be something in your resume that attracted them. People must know that sometimes they have another job for you based on what they see in your resume. You will never know. We hiring managers are not Monsters:-) We are actually nice people:-)

1. Ability to communicate. They way I deliver. Articulate words. Hear how I sound. 2. Your Energy Level... what am I portraying myself... be friendly. Look in the eye. Dont be shy. 3. Know what the team is looking for. What they do as the organization. 4.

So the job interview is completely biased towards extroverts? If you are an introvert or on the spectrum, you're going to be at a disadvantage from the jump. It's such a bullshit process.
