Hi. Thanks for this video. I find it informative. It’s now February 2021, and I’ve struggled since spring of 2019 to free motion quilt (on my home machine) using Hobbs Heirloom 100 % organic cotton batting. (Alternately, it could possibly have been the Tuscany 100% cotton. I’ve discarded the packaging, but it’s beautiful, unscrimmed, unpunched, and very soft and thick. It will pull apart, and my notes I made when I started say it’s organic batting). Should I have anticipated that my machine using thread (Superior King Tut 40) and needle (Superior 90/14) would struggle with free motion? I really want to finish this Queen-sized quilt since I am 1/3 done, but it’s a very slow slog with the upper thread frequently bunching at the needle and hanging up. My question is, for future quilts, ought I to plan on hand quilting and/or walking foot quilting if I continue to use either of those two battings?

Mona- You are correct these are not needle punch much and they do not have scrim. This and the thickness of this batting does make it harder to use on a sit down machine. A lot of quilters that have sit down machines will normally use 80/20 Fusible batting. It is possible you could use a fusible spray or tape to help hold this type of batting in place. If you would like to find out more from Stephanie at Hobbs, you are welcome to email her at stephaniehackney@hobbsbondedfibers.com. I know she would be happy to assist in anyway she can.

Thanks for the informative video, I was wondering if there is a way to know if a fabric is 100% cotton without burning it please :) I just need to know if there is a practical way to find out or test a piece of fabric. Thank you so much for the great video and the great info. Cheers!

The only way we are aware of to check if a fabric is 100% cotton, would be to burn a sample.
