I have my Lindell LN76 chained behind an Art Tube MP and behind that I have chained one channel of an Art Pro VLA 2. This gives me vocals that are undeniably stellar.

I agree ! the Art VLA 2was a shock to me after listening to many high end comps years ago. We had an ART to "get us by " in a film pre-prod studio and we ended up using all the recordingd in the final mix. Soooo nice for tracking when you're going to smash it anyway later or not

UREI sounds amazing, so well balanced on every source (none of the others came close on bass IMO, they distorted the low end too much). The Lindell sounded great overall, and the KT was very decent as well. Not a big fan of the WARM 76. Great video, great demo!

the major difference I hear, especially on the guitars, is that each unit has a different high mid/high frequency resonance/notch, but not sure if that is an overall volume mismatch or something inherent in the units. thanks for the video! very fun exercise

Thank you for taking the time to do this comparison. Really appreciate it. The Lindell is sounding very good. I have the warm audio and it has served me well. On a side note, I am sorry to be "that guy" but the bass guitar was out of tune and it was driving me crazy. LOL. Warm was my fav on guitar, Lindell was my fav on drums and bass. The KT sounded shrill and clinical to me. I owed the KT unit for a few months and sold it. I would say "there isn't a noticeable difference between the warm audio and the real UREI". But this comparison definitely shows that the UREI is noticeably better than the three clones. To me its not worth the $ difference, but there is an audible difference to my ear. On the vocal the warm was my fav. The singer has a nasal quality that was emphasized to a point where it sounded unpleasant to me. I didn't like with some of the compressors.

Definitely feel like the Lindell is most accurate eq wise and how the compression is reacting. One big difference I heard is with the non smashed drums and the bass, the bottom end is much more round and a bit more pleasant to my ear on the urei. I did actually feel like the klark did the round low end better but also a bit darker all around. Not a huge fan of the warm but for the price compared to the urei none of them had a cheap or unpleasant sound. I’m lucky to have access to a vintage urei but will definitely be picking up a lin76 because at that price, why not have some extra 1176 style channels.
@marksmusicplace36272 жыл бұрын
IMO if a person complains about the sound of the klark teknik, warm audio or even the lindell over the UA1176 then they are gear snobs that are just plain aggrevating and ruins it for everyone else. the warm audio, KT and Lindell are designed to give the user a close as possible experience without going broke, I don't see how any one can complain about the clones that can give the user a really good sound without spending 1000s of dollars to do it. I own 2 KT units and will be investing in 2 of the lindell units. I have a ton of plugins. if the UAs were cheaper I would buy them but the clones are really close and no listener that knows nothing about music recording or studio gear will ever know or even care about the gear
@joesalyers2 жыл бұрын
Brand snobbery is rampant in the pro audio community. Back in the 90s when I started studios all had unique gear they liked and the price or brand didn’t matter. Today it’s the opposite with everyone hating anything budget and only praising the most expensive.

Can you let me know what test tone you used for the KT-76. I think my unit is not right. What GR should i expect to see with a -18dbRMS 1K sine wave with the controls at default (In 10 oclock, Out 2 o clock, Slowest attack, fastest release and 4:1 ratio)?
@joesalyers2 жыл бұрын
That is not how you do it. You need to take the compression off and then calibrate with the level recommended by the manufacturer. My UREI 1178 which is a stereo 1176 calibrates to 0 VU with a -16 test tone at 1K. If Klark Teknik doesn’t have the calibration posted you should set the output to 24 with NO compression so take all the buttons out, and then ramp the input up with a -18dbfs 1K test tone until you reach unity gain of 0 VU on the output. Not all hardware works the same even if they are clones of something else. I have 3 LA-2 clones and all of them react differently based on the input gain. So in all honesty the best way to learn how to make hardware sound it’s best is to use it until you are familiar with it. Hope this helps you out.

Have you had the opportunity to listen to the Revive Audio modded versions of the Lin76 or the Lin2a? I’m pretty curious how they sound after the circuits are replaced along with the optical sensor. If the Lin76 is really that close to the original sound, the mods may be a waste, but perhaps the Lin2a mods could make it into a pretty impressive unit.

The problem with budget clone gear it's not going to hold up well compared to a real 1176. Usually the quality of components hense the price aren't in the same league. I think BLA does a nice job selecting top shelf components at a reasonable price that seems to better made than Warm Audio and many others that utilizes a lot of cheap Chinese parts, esp PCB components.

UREI have a perfect cube compression with solid definition and timbre ... Lindell have a more like a piramidal shape with clear definition and timbre just not so dense ... Klak Teknik is just a little brick shape, you get just the top flavor ... Warm Audio have also a Piramidal shape tendency but with a lack of definition and a edgy timbre ... In the budget area I definitely choose the Lindell
@gmichaelhall2 жыл бұрын
UREI is amazing sounding but since that's not an option I think the only choice is between the KT or the Lindell, they are that close to each other. I'm surprised the engineer noted the KT losing clarity on the sybillant vocal what I heard was a cleaner clamping on the sybillant part of the vocal, he's there I'm not but based on the demonstration samples, the KT and Lindell are very very close. The Warm did nothing for me at all, sounded cheap. I'm using Neumann NDH 30 headphones and Senn HD650's. YMMV

Sounds to me like the klark teknik has a slower attack and faster release compared to the others or at least doesn't have the same control as the others. The lindell sounds a bit boosted in the low end and a bit darker in the highs compared to the urei. perhaps a bit muddier. I dunno but maybe i like the warm audio better out of those 3. but i dunno. if i had to chose between warm and lindell it would definitely be a tough choice for me. A friend of mine has the warm audio one. so i kind of want a different one in case they end up in the same place at some point.

You got it wrong regarding the BLA Bluey - the attack knob is indeed opposite to a classic 76 design and goes fast to slow clockwise, but the release knob is actually correct to an 1176 going slow to fast when turning clockwise... unless you meant they are opposite to each other! It's so weird they are both different and didn't chose to just either have them both in the classic configuration, or change them both to be backwards, but the same 🙃

@@NoQualmsTheArtist yeah I know - and I actually really like that it’s not a straight Rev A clone, that it has all these mods and things that have been changed to it over the years… but it still seems kind of stupid they decided to do that with the attack and release and not just make them both the same in the correct config. They also don’t mention anywhere in the manual how they are set up. It’s easy enough to hear it by ear but I know a lot of other Bluey owners that have been slipped up by this. I purchased one of these units based on the positive reviews and a video recommendation. However, I was thoroughly disappointed with the product. My unit exhibited significant noise issues, rendering it practically unusable beyond the 9 o'clock position on the output knob, resulting in a noticeable and distracting hum. Furthermore, it intermittently produced a noise reminiscent of RF interference. In an effort to resolve the problem, I returned the unit to my local dealer and even traveled to their store to test other brand-new units. Unfortunately, every unit I tried exhibited the same background noise problem. This level of noise was unacceptable for a product marketed as a "professional audio-grade compressor."
