Her take isn't even that hot either. Not only do both revolve around characters that are the "last of their kind" who are destined to return peace to their lands, both the Elemental Nations from AtlA and Kumandra from Raya are fictional lands based on a mixture of different Asian cultures. But I've never had someone in my audience try to cancel me over it, because they're there watching me grow as a human year by year, and they know that I'm more than just one bad opinion. The idea that Lindsay got cancelled by HER OWN AUDIENCE blows my mind. These are the people who DID watch her on a regular basis, and DID watch her grow. And they are still going to try to cancel her. I don't know if that says more about them or her, but it doesn't look good on either of them. Seeing her write that she regrets "Playing the game" with colleagues who will drop her the second she isn't popular is just crazy to me. Maybe you should be making genuine friends, not playing the game? If she regrets doing everything just because other people were assholes to her about it, then I don't think her heart was even in the right place. Why would you regret doing what you knew was right just because other people shit on you for it? They're wrong and they don't know the whole story, who cares what they think? No rational person would think that. The problem is that she didn't cater to rational people.

"Walking Away from Omelas" is a pretty good short story by Ursula K LeGuin. It's about a utopian society (the titular Omelas) that somehow depends on a miserable abused child kept in squalor and total isolation in a basement in the town. Everyone who lives there has to see this child AFAIK once a year though a window; and have it explained to them that any attempt to free the child or improve it's conditions ends everyone else's perfect town. It's basically a critique of utilitarianism, because despite the fact that this is an obviously good bargain from a utilitarian perspective, there are those that find it morally unacceptable. It's kind of disgusting that Lindsay Ellis uses this title; because it suggests she either sees herself as the abused child or she sees herself as making the moral choice to walk away. Setting aside how absurd the idea that she's equivalent to an abused child held in total isolation in a basement, "Thing is causing me pain, move away from thing" is not even close to a moral choice. It barely requires a recognizable brain FFS. If she wanted a literary reference for the title of this, may I humbly suggest "The Demons"? Dostoevsky's novel about vicious miserable would be revolutionaries making everything worse for everyone, while an idle and out of touch upper class humours and indulges them because they view it all as an amusing game?
@Shenaldrac
@Shenaldrac 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the informative synopsis! A couple other people have mentioned the book but didn't explain it as well. Completely ignoring the whole Lindsay thing, I imagine I wouldn't enjoy the book very much. Granted all I really have is your synopsis and that's no substitute for the full thing, but it really does just sound like a very blatant criticism of utilitarianism, using a frankly contrived scenario. Granted I like a good amount utilitarianism so I'm biased, but I feel like if you want to criticize it (or anything really, in my (admittedly limited) experience a great deal of dystopian fiction suffers from this) then why use some trumped up hyperbolic situation when you could use a more reasonable, "this could actually happen" thing? Like instead of an entire utopian society somehow running off the misery of an abused child which just doesn't make sense, what about a society in which everyone is entered into a lottery any time an organ transplant is needed, with the "winner" being required to donate the needed organ? That would be very utilitarian, and most readers would find it completely intolerable, but it is something that I could see actually occurring in such a society. I could believe that such a place, such a system could exist. I guess for me, the way I see it is that if you as an author just want to shit on a given -ism in particular I'd much rather that you simply write an essay explaining why you think it's bad, rather than writing a work of fiction that exists solely to push your message.

I don't see how it's so far fetched of a utilitarian concept. Just about every society has historically had slavery, and today many benefit from luxuries for greatly reduced cost for them at the cost of someone in countries without regulations they demand in their own countries for their own labor. And because they're not directly responsible, it's very easy to shift blame onto "the system" or "the corporation" without considering their role in what consumer markets demand.

The thing is, you can't fall into a purity spiral if you don't consider yourself, or let anyone else consider you, or maybe even actively disassociate yourself from the notion of being considered, pure. Take Sseth - although he doesn't try to be offensive for the sake of it, and has toned it down a bit, he still doesn't care about appearing (politically) "correct". He knows his stuff might disgust some people. And his audience knows that as well. Therefore, he'll _never_ become a role model. He'll never become someone to look up to. He'll never be put on a pedestal - and he'll never be knocked off of it, at least from a moral perspective. If you say that Sseth isn't a good person, he'll just shrug it off - "well, yeah, no shit Sherlock. Any other nuggets of wisdom you have to share with us?". Therefore, he never really has to watch his back - the worst that can happen is that he'll become unfunny and fade into obscurity - but his audience will never turn on him morally, because they have no moral standing his audience to begin with, _because_ they're his audience. No such luck for Lindsay Ellis, whose schtick seems to have been "I am holier than thou". But she can't keep it up, because, in the end, she really isn't - so she gets consumed by her own. Ironically, and tragically, what made her purity spiral possible also becomes the reason for her downfall - her arrogance, and her utter reliance on justifying herself as above her peers. Even if she isn't cancelled _that much,_ it's still the end of the world for her - her ego became too fragile to function.

In all fairness, Death of the Author is an old term describing the fact that it doesn’t matter what the author intended if people take their work in a manner that serves their biases. The irony with Rowling is that there’s no mention of elections at all, the “Minister for Magic” (read: magical dictator) neither a serving MP, but somehow appointed from within the ministry itself and has seemingly unchallenged power, so the books aren’t about “fighting fascists,” but a series of coups replacing violent authoritarians with less violent authoritarians and back again. The wizarding world straight up looks like the crappier parts of Africa politically and I think it’s a great setting for books but I wouldn’t want to live there

I'm on the left economically. I'm pretty radical about a lot of things. Having said that: 1. I hate that Lindsay and Vaush and the like get called "leftist" when they are not on the actual left in any meaningful way. Lindsay posting that essay without informing her workers in advance is brutally, punitively anti-worker. If Jeff Bezos shut down a fulfilment centre and the workers heard about in a press release, Lindsay would be the first person to call him an evil capitalist piece of shit. Just disgusting behaviour. 2. If she actually cares about these people, she shouldn't just collapse her business like this. She makes $20k a month from Patreon, plus presumably fairly hefty AdSense revenue, and in the last two years she's produced barely 20 videos. Could she employ writers, and just be a frontwoman for the channel? Could she hire someone to run her Twitter? I don't expect her to feel solidarity for the people attacking her, who seem like dicks (even though by her own logic, they are right by definition, and she is wrong for disagreeing), but why has she not tried to find a way to keep them in jobs, especially during a global health and economic crisis? 3. It's hilarious that she makes a joke out of how "cancel culture doesn't exist." I'm pretty sure she used those exact words herself when she made one of her two hatchet job videos on JK Rowling. In those videos, she mocked Rowling for "weaponising her trauma," while making little to no criticism of the TRAs who sent her rape and death threats to the extent that the police had to get involved because several of the threats were considered to be a lot more than just big talk on the internet. The fact that Lindsay doesn't even pause during this essay to reflect on that is another sign that this is a narcissistic pity party, not anything that normal people should give a shit about. Twitter sucks. People are mean on the internet. Nobody deserves a nasty Twitter dogpile. Still, I won't lose a moment's sleep feeling bad for Lindsay Ellis. She doesn't feel bad for anyone else, ever.
