Correction: Constantine II of Greece died in 2023
We'll after 3 years of requests, I've finally done it! Here are all 85 of Queen Victoria's great-grandchildren. Among them are 7 monarchs, 6 consorts and 4 heirs who for various reasons never inherited thrones. Other were nobles and commoners who led fascinating lives. And seeing how royals from all over Europe were connected by blood during WWI and WWII is fascinating. To get ahead of the inevitable next request to cover the Queen’s great great grandchildren, of which there were 142, I will be highlighting just the subsequent generations who did and still do occupy or claim thrones.

Fun Fact: Lord Louis Mountbatten and his brother George were absolutely smitten with two of the Romanov daughters. George had a crush on Tatiana and was able to spend time with her on a 1914 trip to Russia, and Louis had his eyes on Maria. In an interview, Louis said of Maria: "I was crackers about Maria, and was determined to marry her. She was absolutely lovely. I keep her photograph in my bedroom - always have.” Louis very much did keep a photograph of Maria in his bedroom up until his death and even spoke endlessly of her on a 1975 visit to the former Imperial palace in Russia. Sadly, he didn't get to live to see Maria's remains finally found in 2007. Meanwhile, George named his daughter Tatiana in honour of his former crush.

I doubt the Czar would have allowed them to wed, as first cousin marriage wasn't legal in Russian Orthodoxy. He belatedly recognized Kyril and Ducky's marriage to keep K's nasty younger brothers further from the throne.

@@areiaaphrodite No, his mother Victoria Battenberg and Tsarina Alexandra were sisters. It was a bit scandalous to snobs that the Tsar's BIL was the product of a morganatic marriage, but the Mountbatten brains and drive probably came from that lower born wife. Victoria and Alexandra were second cousins of Nicholas through Alexander II's Hessian wife.

That entire line of family is so tragic to me. Louis and Alice had seven children and only have descendants from Victoria and from Irene's middle son. Two children and six grandchildren assassinated, one child and two grandchildren dying from hemophilia complications, one grandchild and three great-grandchildren (plus an unborn great-grand) dying in a plane crash, and a daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter dying of communicable disease. Insane.

It breaks my heart that arguably Queen Victorias most compassionate and kind daughter, Princess Alice, and many of her descendants were plagued with bad luck and died in such sad circumstances. She did so much for the people of Hesse, especially women and made vast improvements to healthcare in her husbands nation. She also nursed her maternal grandmother, the Duchess of Kent and her father Prince Albert on their deathbeds without any issue. The world can have a weird and sometimes cruel sense of humor

Valerie’s story is the most interesting of Queen Victorias great grandchildren as she was able to survive the Holocaust due to her being able to prove that she wasn’t actually Jewish but was the daughter of Albert which prevented her from being persecuted. Unfortunately many of her adopted siblings weren’t as fortunate as they were later killed during the Holocaust. Her story is also ironic as her ancestor from Queen Victorias side was Edward the 1st who notoriously expelled Jews from England in the year 1290.

It is not widely known that Princess Alexandra and Prince (Bertie) Edward had an illigitimate son, conceived at their initial meeting in September 1861. It became obvious that Alexandra was pregnant by December 1861 and on receiving this news, Prince Albert furiously confronted Edward, unfortunately dying shortly after. Alexandra was sent to South Africa where she met the intended foster parents and in June 1862, their eldest son was born, unannounced, baptized with an assumed name and sadly abandoned. Alexandra returned home to become engaged to Prince Edward before eventually marrying, thus legitimising their eldest son. The descendants of this son have irrefutable DNA evidence of their zero distance between them and the Royal Family. Zero DNA distance.

Oooh, enjoying these videos! It's crazy just how many descendents Victoria and Albert have. Potential ideas for future videos: - Various intermarriages between Ottoman Sultans and Byzantine princesses. This was such common practice for awhile that when you look at paintings of successive Sultans, you can see their skin lightening. - More history of the Romanovs. There were actually a ton of Romanov royals kicking around at the time the Imperial Family was killed - it was actually part of the problem, that government coffers in a not-wealthy country were expected to support all kinds of cousins and extended relatives of the family as well. But in particular, Tsar Nicholas' sister Olga had a fascinating life. Romanov lineage and individual bios could fill a number of videos. - Breaking down the zillions of German royals and territories and principalities throughout history. Some of them were barely larger than one city. - Various lineages of the Hapsburgs (I believe you've done some of this). But starting from Empress Maria Theresa, mother of Marie Antoinette, there is a long and fascinating line of descent, and again many interesting individual stories. - If you want to dabble more in non-Western royalty, the lineage of Genghis Khan is also quite interesting. There was also a stage in there where Mongol royals were taking Korean wives, so that's a thing. - In general, Eastern European royal history tends to get less attention in English-speaking media. Apologies if you've done some of these and I missed them, or if I'm stepping on toes here - just some ideas I wanted to toss out, take or leave them 😊.

BTW Two names mentioned in this video also have a connection: It was George Mountbatten's wife Nadejda (who had a reputation for bi-sexuality) who was responsible for Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt losing custody of her daughter Gloria. Mrs. Vanderbilt's lawyer was questioning a maid long after he should have stopped when he got a reply that doomed his client. Her maid told about finding Gloria (Sr.) and the Marchioness of Milford Haven in bed together. The court then gave custody of her daughter to her sister-in-law Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney ( her gay affair with Richard Morris Hunt's daughter didn't come to light until she was dead.)

Louis Mountbatten wanted to marry his cousin Grand Duchess Marie of Russia. Queen Marie of Romania had six children. How many her husband had is an open question, but it was less than six! Victoria Melita's daughter Marie's husband Karl was a great-grandson of Queen Victoria's half-brother Ernst of Leiningen.

In my opinion, Carol, Elisabeta and Nicolas are FOR SURE Ferdinand's kids. The oldest two were born before Marie started taking lovers, and Nicolas looks just like Ferdinand. Ileana and Maria are the two most uncertain for me--Ileana could be Ferdinand's, but I think Maria is definitely Grand Duke Boris' child. To me, she really resembles Princess Kira, who was the daughter of Boris' brother Kirill and Missy's sister Victoria Melita. Mircea though, I think was definitely Prince Stirbey's son.

Tiny correction: Marie's youngest child, Mircea, was a boy (Mircea is a male name) Fun fact: Carol the II had a son with Zizi Lambrino, Ioan (but since he was considered illegitimate, he wasn't allowed the luxuries of royal life) - and his own son leeches off of the Royal Family in Romania with his wife and son. My mother lived there, and she hated the guy's guts

Two things always amaze me when learning about Queen Victoria's descendants. First, it is sad how young most of these people were when they died. I think the average age of death was mid 60s! Lifespans are certainly much longer today. The second thing is how interrelated everybody was. The creator of these wonderful videos does a great job running down the line of great grandchildren. But then they all married each other or into other royal houses and I give up trying to figure out who was a second cousin to who! For instance, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were probably related at least 2 or 3 different ways. Actually, tracing the consanguinity of Europe's royals - from at least the mid 19th century to today - would be a fascinating video. And I'm not talking about "incest" because these royals were not closely related enough for that. But they had common ancestors. Just an idea...

I would just add that there are some key principles which emerge a) that the great grandchildren were of an age to be deposed or killed in the rise of Communism and Fascisms and in the two European wars of the 20th century b) that haemophilia affected some of them, tragically c) there are rather a lot of car and plane accidents (against in an ers which was as yet largely unregulated). It would be interesting to know how many of the further generations have or carry the gene of haemophilia (if such things are known). One wonders where Queen Victoria got it from.

A mistake at 20:14 : Mircea is actually a boy and should be Prince Mircea.

Princess Victoria of Hesse’s children all looked very Coburg. They looked a lot like the cousins of Victoria and Albert to me. Especially Queen Louise, she was very Coburg like in features with the nose and the deep-set eyes.

@LindsayHoliday: You skipped two great grandchildren: Grand Duchess Maria & Grand Duke Dmitri. Children of Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine, who was daughter of Princess Alice, who was daughter of Queen Victoria.

Prince Alice’s family is the most tragic one 😭 - two of her daughters (Alix & Elisabeth) brutally killed by the Russians - her granddaughters (Romanov Siblings) got killed along with their parents - her granddaughter (Princess Alice/Philip’s mother) undergone crazy experiments because of her mental health - her grandson (Lord Mountbatten) got assassinated by the Irish - some of her descendants suffered Hemophilia as well

You got Marquess right this time, but it's still "Sax KO-burg." It sounds like burger, and iceberg. Not bearg.

I wondered why Saxe wasn't "Sax-ah," until I saw it was spelled Sachsen in German.

It’s kind of startling to see how each successive child/grandchild of Victoria had fewer and fewer children…
