@sen.m78325 жыл бұрын
Totally understandable by modern standards but you also have to comprehend the context. If one of the King's wives were cheating on him, no-one could be sure that a child she gave birth to was actually fathered by the King. So the whole point of a hereditary rule would go out the window. It was an incredibly misogynistic time, double standards were everywhere, in both the nobility and the peasantry.
@redjirachi15 жыл бұрын
Hypocritical, but not without reason. If a queen were to commit adultery, it would threaten the legitimacy of potential heirs. Remember, Henry's father was the final winner in a bitter civil war over arguments of legitimacy and who should be the reigning monarch. There is also an important social element regarding the king's power. The king is supposed to be the most powerful man in the country, a representation of the nation's might. For a king to be cuckolded is socially a great blow to their perceived power, and a weakness that can hurt him and by extension the nation. It is a double standard, but it does have it's importance. In fact, one could argue that some of why misogyny is a thing in the first place is the paranoia over the paternity of a child being threatened, back when inheritance and lineage was a vital matter of politics

And Boleyn went out of her way to get away from Henry. She left court. She did not encourage him at all. She didn't want him. She was in love with another man. But She had no choice because he was the king. Jane Seymour, on the contrary, did everything that Anne was accused of doing.
@TheBeetress5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Ann didnt sleep with him because she wanted to be queen. She had no idea that Henry would go to such lengths to divorce his first wife so he could marry her. She left the court, didnt respond to his letters in the hope that his interest in her would soon stop. But for some reason (maybe the first woman to do so) thses actions only increased his interest in her.

Even Anne´s father was against the union. Contemporary letters writte about the father complaining about the king interest in Anne. Nesseire : Sadly, Anne was in a no win situation. No one dared to criticize the King (whose behavior really was terrible) but no one defended Anne. I don't know how much of Mary Boelyn's reputation was based on truth...but then as now, men often brag about having possessed the women who reject them. Besmirching a woman's reputation has always been the kind of petty revenge that appeals to a certain kind of man. A young woman's virtue was a valuable resource for her family and she would have been reminded of this constantly.

And Blount is pronounced exactly how it looks. blOWnt. These names (excluding Baume, as it is a directly French name) may have been brought over during the Norman invasion, but they were thoroughly anglicized by this point, and surely wouldn’t have been pronounced with a French accent in the Court of England. Anne Boleyn was not a mistress, she refused his advances till he married her... so not an adulterer although Henrys act to rid his ex-wife was cruel but in them days you could not refuse a king. Annes own sister did however become his mistress and again she was pushed to accept him even by her own family. Anne was very sensible to stand firm yet with such a tyrant she still lost her head!

Anne Hasting sisters informed Anne's husband about her affair with the king (not Compton) and her husband took her away from court and put her in a nunnery as a punishment. We don't know what happened to her after that and Henry Vlll was so angry he sent Anne's sister away from court as well. Please get the details right.

She doesn't even know there is 0 evidence of Mary Boleyn ever leaving England, let alone become French King's mistress.
@juanitarichards10745 жыл бұрын
@@janehaylay1152 Yes there is if you know which books to read. She and her sister Anne went to wait on Queen Claude at the French Court and for some reason Mary was eventually sent back to England and her father got her into the English court to wait on Queen Ctaherine of Aragon. But they originally were sent to France in the train of Henry Vlll's sister Mary when she went to marry the old French king. Mary asked for those two girls specifically because Anne spoke French. Mary Boleyn traveled with her in her train and Anne Boleyn crossed over from Flanders where she had been at Margaret of Austria's court as a kind of finishing school student. Then when the old French king died and Queen Mary was widowed the Boleyn sisters were asked to stay on at the new King Francis I's court to wait on his wife Claude.

Good job, Lindsey, on getting a better? Probably her? Image of Catherine Howard, instead of that picture that was used forEVER that was supposed to be her. That one is no young girl.🤷♀️. And thumbs UP getting this information. I read a LOT about the Tudors, and you really fleshed them out for me. Fantastic research. Learned something new, and as always, your illustrations are wonderful! This is exactly why I patreon you👍. I’d heard of Anne Hastings in passing, but Wowzer. Mary Boleyn, older child, possibly. She has a Tudor look about her. The son, Naw.

Anne wanted to be queen? What? No way, she was trying to keep the king away, initially she was just protecting herself. She knew how dangerous the game was. When Henry started to court her even harder, she had no other option than to fight for what he wanted, she stared to believe she's maybe the chosen one. But initially, I seriously doubt she wanted to be queen and that was why she rejected Henry's proposal to become his main mistress.
@amasion28825 жыл бұрын
patricia slauf : Given Anne’s reputation for intelligence, she likely believed she was a passing infatuation to Henry and if she fended him off long enough he’d lose interest and leave her free for a respectable marriage. At some point, Henry must have said or done something that opened her heart. She trusted him and believed he genuinely loved her. She was also probably emotionally tired of fending him off and having to deal with resentment and jealousy from his wife and her supporters. Anne saw her sister “pumped and dumped” by Henry. She wanted better than that for herself. Also, Henry was NOT the obese mean old man he became AFTER Anne’s death. He was in his 30’s, tall, athletic, good humored and highly romantic and seductive. He was a King. The most important, powerful and richest man in the land. If he was single, and Anne had no other love interest, she would have accepted him happily.
@luvprue14 жыл бұрын
She should have made Henry Viii make a good match for her, and a title instead of being queen. Her daughter was still declared a bastard,and her reputation was still ruin. But if she settled for a title for herself, and any kid she had with the king she would have lived.

Given he had issues having children with any of his wives, it’s not surprising he only had one illegitimate child to survive birth. Only two of his children with Catherine of Aragon lived past birth and they were married 24 years.

Queen Catherine had a viable male with her second pregnancy. That son, also named Henry, died at just under 2 months old from either an intestinal disorder, or maybe some other infection. Henry FitzRoy was the second born son of Henry VIII.

Anne Hastings (her married name) was born Anne Stafford. The name of Jane Popincourt (Jeanne de Popincourt in French) is not pronounced 'Poopincourt' or 'Poupincourt' but starts with the sound 'Pop' (same as you would for a soft drink). One of Elizabeth Blount's children was suspected as having been Henry VIII's daughter: Elizabeth Tailboys. Mary Boleyn was the eldest of the FIVE Boleyn children. (Mary; Thomas; Anne; Henry; and, George). The new Queen of France (After Mary Tudor) was 'Claude' and her name is NOT pronounced like 'Cloud' but starts with the sound 'Clo' with a more marked accent sound on the 'O'. Katherine Brandon could NOT have become Henry VIII's 7th wife as his last wife SURVIVED him - hence, this would have been impossible and so this comment is not correct ...not even close. . .
@denkatoneva90965 жыл бұрын
Actually, Henry may have wanted to execute Katherine for her strong protestant beliefs and scholarship as he was persuaded by Catholic supporters. (However, she managed to save herself from this fate and therefore survived the marriage and outlived him). This is why Katherine Brandon (who Henry and Charles were rumoured to 'share') was pushed forward. Even though Katherine was a reformer too, she was seen as more easy to control and turn into a papist.
@ereynolds425 жыл бұрын
Historically speaking it's highly unlikely that Mary had multiple affairs in France and the Flanders mare comment isn't seen in documents at the time but decades later when people were trying to discredit Elizabeth I. Had mary affair with Henry had been as well known as you suggested with both her children being his then Katherine of Aragon would have used it in her defence, the fact that she didn't shows his discretion. Also it is unlikely Mary male child was Henry's as given his want of male heirs he would have acknowledge him regardless of Mary marital status.
@amasion28825 жыл бұрын
E Reynolds : Historians generally agree neither of Mary Boleyn’s children were fathered by Henry. The affair wasn’t occurring during their estimated conception times. I also agree that if Henry reasonably believed himself the father of Mary’s son he would have acknowledged him. By that time Henry was desperate for male progeny. No way would he ignore the existence of a healthy son.

I simply can’t stand those who call Anne Boleyn whore, homewreker or anything. This people just believe in ALL the movies and tv shows out there without getting the facts straight. Let’s go then: Anne didn’t answer Henry’s letters. She ran away from court, she send back any gifts he would give her. Only this is enough to show that she didn’t want him. But there’s more: she was in love with another man: Henry Pierce. She wanted so much to run away from the king that she MARRIED Henry Pierce, secretly, only she and her husband knew. Now hear this: when Anne’s father told the king about it, the king promptly ANULED her marriage with Pierce. She got heartbroken, obviously. But then her father went and took her back to court, to keep her away from Henry Pierce while the family of the last quickly married him to another woman, taking advantage of the fact that Anne was away. In the court, Anne realized she had no choices: she would marry Henry, or she would marry no one. And she was already “too old”, she couldn’t wait no longer or she would be considered too old for any marriage, since she was almost 30. And that’s it. How Anne Boleyn was basically forced to marry Henry VIII. And even after all this suffering, she is (wrongly) called whore. For absolutely no reason. So whenever i see someone say anything about her that calls her a hoe, i just assume that this person is just highly uneducated or, overall, just stupid
