I disagree, if someone who truly understands morals and that no human is superior to another human had said power, why would they kill? What would they have to gain from it? The only reason I could see it even be on the table for consideration would be if said person was a threat to other people so for the sack of others you MIGHT, but then why not instead just put them somewhere where they can't, you don't have to result to murder in any situations whatsoever there is always another solution, and someone who truly understands that, I would trust with said power.
@paradoxicalpanda7954

Say there was someone, who was invincible, and because of this could kill with impunity, he has no fear of his own death as he's invincible therefore meaning he can never be placed in a it's you or me situation which is how most deaths between people occur I believe, he would have absolutely no reason and nothing to gain out of murder, the only thing I'd see him gaining is extreme guilt and personal trauma whilst achieving nothing in exchange. IMO there's always another solution than murder
@paradoxicalpanda7954

Even if the person being murdered 'deserves it' and has killed thousands of others, and done a lot of bad shit, why not lock him up underground where he can never have any human contact again without it being through a screen, or on a remote island somewhere, the issue is solved, he's no longer a threat to others, as bad as he might deserve it, it's just not worth murdering him. An eye for an eye doesn't fix anything

To be honest, I think a more honest question would be, "if you had this death power, how long until you used it, and would you give it up?" Because look at the nightmarish answers this has inspired in these comments, everyone has a list, people are already making jokes at how long the list would be. If absolute power corrupts absolutely, this death power would lead to a damned extinction. What an awful thing to contemplate.

Lipzig Schweitzer Augustus Caesar is an example of how absolute power doesn't always corrupt absolutely. I think this power can go terribly wrong in the hands of most people. Would I use the power? Only in the most dire of situations. The lives of others are not mine to take. Would I give up the power? No. not at first anyway. It's a lot of pressure, I would be scared to accidentally set it off. I never say "goodbye" though so I would probably be fine

I don't know, even then, medically assisted suicide might be the better option than the magical 'natural causes' option. Pain and suffering, you know? A "permanent morphine dream" sounds much nicer than say, a fatal heart attack or stroke. Now for capital punishment I can see a case to be made if the power is 100% effective. Giving them a heart attack and them surviving only to be 'killed' again sounds cruel, unusual and anything but justice but if it's guaranteed they will die then I'm more inclined to allow it. Overall through, still would be against capital punishment in general however.

Questions like this appear quite often this days (aside from 9gag and manga like Death Note), people (at least most of them) say like Lidnybeige "no I don't think I would use it" but I guarantee that if you had power to kill WITHOUT anyone knowing or any real consequences some people would die. How many depends on a person but almost all of us would do it for one reason or other. It's like with those questions: would you do x for x money? And ridiculous amounts like hundreds of millions appear... Most would kill for such amounts without blinking if there was no consequences. Fear of law and being punished is for most the only thing keeping them at check.

Lindybeige, you have probably seen some mention of "Death Note" or "Kira" in the comments to this video. If you haven't googled these things yet, but for some reason are looking around the youtube comments for help (you are probably in the wrong place for that, to be quite honest), Death Note was a series about at least a very similar scenario. It is a Japanese animation (and now a Netflix live action thing but we don't talk about that) about a college age insufferable genius named Kira that gets a magic book (from a demonic creature) that can end a life just by writing a person's name in the book. Now, it is a bit more complicated than your scenario, because you need both the actual legal name of the person AND be able to clearly picture their face. The main character "Kira" started off killing convicted serial killers and the like, but he quickly went absolutely mad with power, deciding he was a God destined kill enough people to make a "perfect" world.

My firts thought after hearing question was: no. Because i am personal kind of guy. I realized i wouldn`t want that kind of power, because if i`d hate somebody enough to kill them, i`d like to do it myself in such way, that they`d knew it was me Scary thing, human mind, even oneself can`t be really sure of it... I`ll explain, because these examples were first to pop in my head: say, i encounter "rape in progress", or somebody just being cruel to a child or an animal(without intention of eating it afterwards, just dealing pain, rather than quick death). I`d want to feel thier life leaving them squeezed out by my own hands, just to make them suffer Not a pretty thought. But everybody who say definite "yes" should realize, that killing is not easy. And everyone saying "no, i`d never..." have to realize, that retaliation and revenge are put by Mother Nature into our minds for a reason

There's an anime series (and movie as well, but the movie sucks): "Death Note". It's about a boy, who was given god's of death notebook. He can kill anyone, as long as he'll write that person name in the notebook. I think that anime answers question pretty well and can be summarized with words of Lord Acton: "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely". And I agree with it, because basically we're just animals and we want to succeed. Society set up rules, we have to submit, but probably, if we knew we would got away with are actions, we would do horrible things. Anyway, I strongly recommend you that anime.

I trust people around me but not enough to give them this kind of power, I always know what I'm thinking, I have no way of knowing their minds. That being said, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. So maybe I would eventually start to justify using it.

The point you make about this power being a terrible curse is very interesting. I am reminded of a famous move quote: 'With great power comes great responsibility' To take this one step further, there is a thought experiment called the Trolley Problem which explores the morality of action vs inaction. In this scenario, a runaway carriage is hurtling towards a group of people tied to the tracks and will kill them imminently unless you pull a lever and change the tracks to a different line; however a single person is tied to that line. There are multiple variations and expansions to this problem and I would encourage everyone to check it out as it raises some interesting points about our notions of the value of life. Returning to the point at hand though, most people would agree that if you do not pull the lever, you are responsible for the deaths of more people than necessary. Consequently, were you to possess this power, there is a strong argument to be made that you are responsible for the terrible actions of others because you could have prevented them. An oil baron you meet while travelling who destroys vast tracks of wilderness, poisons rivers and sells automatic weapons to tribesman so they can wipe each-other out on land (s)he wants to convert, a politician encouraging increased military actions against civilian populations, a thug down the local pub who glasses someone to death one night. Imagine having to live with the knowledge that you could have prevented all these outcomes, I think it would drive many people to a mental breakdown. Of course, as soon as you begin to use this power, you are left with the mental chaos of being forced to decide who deserves to live and who deserves to die. A serial rapist? Easy. A politician you hate? Sure. That guy that stole your wallet last night?...I don't think it is hard to see where this is going. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Or, as Abraham Lincoln put it 'Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power. I conclusion, the more I think about it, the more I realise just how right Lindy is for saying this power would be a curse. Pull the lever and you risk becoming a monster, walk away and forever have to live with the consequences of your inaction.

You could of course use this power for good (in a way): For example if someone is in a coma from which they will *definitely* never awaken, and the family can't decide whether or not to pull the plug. "Goodbye, goodbye." It might come off as the act of a monster to govern over life and death like this, but do bear in mind that they passed on naturally and nobody would ever find out it's you.
@davidweihe6052
@davidweihe6052 6 жыл бұрын
Overlord IV > and nobody would ever find out it's you. Pretty much the defining signal that you are evil. To use your example there is no way to know that someone will definitelynever awaken, in all possible parallel probability planes, just that no physician can think of a treatment TODAY (or at least, none that you can ask). Therefore, you are substituting your judgement for those of people who would want to see the comatose patient wake up, if possible, AND you are not willing to defend your choice to kill the patient to either his doctors, his family and friends, or the law and society. Clearly, unlike Galadriel, you would not have "passed the test" and been allowed to pass into the West.

I think all of us have had thoughts of physically hurting people who have wronged us in some significant ways (like bullies in school) but at the same time all of us are perfectly aware that it is JUST a thought and that if we were presented with a situation that allowed us to actually hurt that person, we wouldn't. I definitely have for my bullies. It is similar to the intrusive thoughts we all have at times. Like thoughts of jumping off high buildings just because we're close to the edge, Or punching a person just because they're there, or interrupting somebody's speech by randomly screaming on top of our lungs. Just thoughts, heck sometimes they're so unexpected and wrong that I myself find myself revolted at my intrusive thoughts. But It is important to be aware of their existence, and to know that they are just ephemeral things of no value or meaning.

Nietzsche started to study theology to become a priest but lost his faith. He then analyzed the society and came to the conclusion: "God is dead and WE killed him". For the rest of his life he tried to create concepts to deal with this loss of "divine power". He never stated that he killed god or that the death of god is a triumph; he only tried to create meaning in a now meaningless(godless) world.
