Remember reading a similar tale in Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts ( _epic_ book, well worth a look), he describes travelling into rural India and meeting a very similar reaction - the villagers he meets can't understand why he wants to sleep alone and so fear he'll get lonely and depressed. ...Always struck me as a telling truth that goes completely missed in our society... I have a suspicion, particularly over the past year's lock-down, that a great deal of people in our culture are suffering continually from the symptoms of quite extreme isolation and yet it is so normal today that it goes completely unrecognised ...with us instead giving those effects of long-term isolation names like 'Mental health problems', 'depression' etc.

@arterialblue45358 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I looked it up and it looks like it was originally a round, presumably flat bread that served as a plate during medieval times. Later instead of bread it was a carved tray for the food, or perhaps if you used a metal plate, hot food would quickly heat the plate making it too hot to touch so the Trencher protected you from burns. From the looks of it, I'd call it the ancient ancestor of the cafeteria tray.

I for one am damn thankful to be able to sleep in my own room in my own bed, and (not counting past girlfriends or childhood sleepovers) have never enjoyed having to sleep in the same room as other people. 8:45 I'm really amazed by the use of pea pods, not because of the noise, but because they even had intact pods in the first place. My grandparents were sufficiently medieval to still make all their food, and the process of removing peas from the pod turned the pods into chaff - they'd gather the pea plants from the field, let them dry properly, then hit them a whole lot with a specialized tool (a 7-foot stick, with another 3-foot stick tied to it). It was FUN!

Wonderful. 1) Given the choice I'd sleep on rushes. 2) in 1964 in some hotels in Spain I'd occasionally have another man slip quietly into bed with me quite late and not stir until the pre-dawn dark, then slip away. 3) In 1974 I bought an old used inner spring mattress. I still use it, since I have never found an equally soft and comfortable mattress in a show room nor in any hotel (and the hotels I now go to are farther up the food chain than the ones of my roving youth.) A week of travel is about my max now, since I sleep so poorly on the slabs they offer. I wish I could request a pile of fresh rushes.

Asking the important questions here: How are you having sex when you're sleeping in a room full of other people? Did they have an extra room for that or did they just not mind everybody hearing and potentially looking?
@Implond8 жыл бұрын
M. Vipsanius Agrippa given that there's (possibly apocryphal, I don't know) stories of there being witnesses to the marital bed on a wedding night to ensure the marriage was legally consummated, my guess is that people weren't so scared of people hearing.
@couchpotatoe918 жыл бұрын
I dunno, that story always seemed to me a bit like this "prima nocte" myth. Like why would anybody have to watch it? If there's an objection/ divorce later on you can still control the woman's maidenhead. Then again wasn't the church in medieval ages very fond of taking away the fun from sex? Perhaps having the parents watching mandatorily alligns with that plan :p...
@Fredrikschou8 жыл бұрын
M. Vipsanius Agrippa a very good point. likely, People had sex everywhere but the bed: outdoors, in the hayloft, against a lamppost. and they probably had les sex all round

If you wanted privacy you used a blanket. But seriously suddenly the church obsession with missionary position only makes a whole lot more sense. Just imagine being in a dormitory of a monastery and go full Kama Sutra
@musicguy84738 жыл бұрын
With the privacy issue in marriages and procreation is something I've always wondered about with Indian families when I was over there. Particularly in the lower class areas were a entire house is smaller than a western bedroom. Or middle class areas when you have one group of people sleeping on the floor in one room, and the married couple sleeping in a room behind a cotton sheet that doesn't even reach to the floor. (That said there is a lot of variation across the different areas of India I've visited in terms of housing and family dynamics so probally not much of a simple answer anywhere.)

In 1965 I shared a large room(barrack) with 40 some 18-19 year old men. It was noisy, smelly and not conducive to restful slumber. One popular game was the lighting of "farts". Nuff said.

In England inns were commonly the only all weather gathering place so popular places to hold local court hearings. My old local. Cornish inn used to double as the court house. One in Leicestershire still does for the feudal Moot.

Bedding due to its expense used to be a traditional item for a woman’s dowry, at least in parts of Germany. Also, the “sit-up bed” was quite a common sight on a museum tour I went on in Amsterdam. I saw some in ships (makes sense due to space restrictions) but also a very representative one in Rembrandt’s home.

Some of my best childhood fun came from antics surrounding discarded appliance boxes. It was common my buds and I to crawl inside and by turning perpendicular to the long axis, by "crawling up" the interior side move along mimicing an over sized tank tread. Climbing the up slope in our back yard wasquite the challange as cardboard allowed for very little purchase on pine needles...

Didn't people in medieval times get up during the night for a few hours? I seem to think it had a specific name but can't remember. Or it could be my overactive imagination. 😮

Monks would get up at midnight for first prayer. They would usually go to sleep around 7 or 8 depending on the season.
@Nikarus23708 жыл бұрын
Depends on culture. IIRC some mediterranian cities would basically be ghost towns at noon (everyone is inside sleeping and hiding from the heat), and then at night would go out to go about their normal business. Hotter parts of the Americas also do it, and I do believe it happens in the middle east also. I mean, why be outside trying to work in weather that can literally kill you, when you can hide inside in the shade, take a nap, and get up when the sun isn't quite so harsh, and go about your business. Yeah it'll get dark, but if you're outside and doing things as night comes along, you'd be amazed at how good your night vision is.

This is far and away the most interesting, entertaining, and educational bed commercial I've ever watched. So what kind of bed did you get? p.s. what you're missing about the unboxing videos -- you watch them to fall asleep, or as soothing background sound so you can pretend another living being is close enough you can hear them breathing and moving around. Because what if you have a nightmare?
