For this patch, I decided to go with a single output setup. For optimal tone, use it with full range, full response speakers but it sounds great through guitar speakers as well.
I'm using the German Ubersonic with a Screamer 808 in front of it. I also have a Hedgehog D9 and Transistor Tape Delay in a lead boost footswitch. For COB's new Drop B songs, I have the Pitch Wham set to -1 when tuned to Drop C.

BACK UP ALL PRESETS BEFORE LOADING CUSTOM PRESETS. Some Helix's may lock up and require a factory reset if a downloaded patch contains an Impulse Response that doesn't exist in the unit's memory. Just be aware. More people have had success rather than problems but just a heads up

@@Novecento I haven't used the pod go but it contains the same sounds that the hx stomp does. The main limitation is the customizability of the signal chain in the pod go. You have 10 total blocks but 4 of them need to be volume/wah, amp, eq, cab/ir. The other 6 can be whatever else you want in whatever order you want. If you're looking for simplicity, the pod go might be more your speed because it has the same quality of sounds as the helix or the hx stomp. If you want a small powerhouse with less footswitches for convenience, the stomp might be better for you.

I'm looking for simplicity, usually I like to start from a pre-made patches and then just tweaking them to my liking, I love 80s guitar sounds, from the classics to Timo Tolkki and Alexi Laiho so I really don't need crazy signal chains. So, if, like you said, the POD Go has the same sound quality of the Stomp, I think I'll go with it! Thanks for clearing things up!

This is amazing. Question since you seem very knowledgeable, I play in multiple cover bands playing everything from My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy, to Children Of Bodom and Nightwish. If I’m looking for a do it all rig where I can just download the tones of the artists I want, plug and play, do I have to buy a $1200 Helix Floor, or will a $600 HX Stomp suffice? I also plan on using a dedicated Digi-Drop for tuning changes as well of course.

I actually use a version of your patch as my lead guitar tone while performing. You've got the Noise Gate setup perfectly. Although it's got that great heavy sound, it's a very clean, borderline noiseless patch for me. So I do tonnes of shredding, sweeping etc, no string noise. Sounds great. I've tweaked it and added some little bits for me, but great job. I'm curious what you using the Mid-Boost for?

Thanks so much and I'm glad you're enjoying the patch! I use the mid boost for some earlier COB tracks but it also helps cut through a little bit because the German Uber is pretty mid-scooped by default. It also helps cut over the backing tracks

It's kind of weird - if I download the patch and import it to my helix, I don't get any signal out of it. If I copy the single blocks 1:1 into an emtpy preset then, it works ... maybe a bug? Anyways, sounds great, even with my passive PU Ibanez. Really has a strong Bodom feel to it! Tomorrow my LTD Alexi should arrive and I will try my best to honor the master! @@DanCapeau Hey man im having trouble with this as well. i just got a helix the other day and still pretty new to it. what do you mean by clear the IR block? ive tried heaps of different output combinations to see if anything works but struggling to get any sound out.

@@luismota3470 I think what seems to be working for some people is to actually delete the IR block in the preset. Then add a new one with either the bodom IR from the link or whichever you prefer. Its also a pretty old firmware patch so it might be a little buggy with latest updates.

the link to the full IR downloads just redirects to realtor and other advertisement websites. If i click the single IR download for dropbox, i just get a .wav file i can play that has a second of nothing.

Adam Workman damn they must have taken the pack down. The wav is the impulse response. It's not a traditional sound file with sound, more a snapshot of a frequency spectrum. Load the wav into the Helix impulse bank and then you can use it in the impulse block of the chain :)

Hi Dan, Nice sounding patch, one of the best i've heard. I loaded it to my Helix rack but I'm not getting any sound. I have the IR in channel 21 but still not getting anything. Can you tell me what I may be doing wrong? It sounds like it's working for everyone else. I also downloaded the Void Walker patch and I'm having the same problem.

+Ron Argueta Thanks dude! I appreciate any feedback. Hmmm Be sure to check the level of the IR block as well as the overall output level (and output jacks for that matter). For some reason I've notice that my IR block level is sometimes lower. I would check those things and then let me know.

Hey what do you need to use the helix? I currently have a evh5150iii into a orange ppc412 and i cant get any tones i like without pedals. Thinking of selling and going the digital route (helix or axe fx).

Steven Rozzano Hey Steven, it really depends on how your want to use it. You can use regular powered studio monitors, you can use a guitar cab with a dedicated power amp, you can use a guitar cab with a head and just plug in to the FX loop return (which bypasses everything but the power amp section of the head). Or you can go headphones or any portable speaker. There are so many options and the helix allows you to tweak every eq aspect to the speaker source you're using with it. I would shop around KZbin for helix sounds you like because most likely they will be the direct sounds meaning you can use studio monitors or a Full Range Flat response speaker to get the same or similar sound. For example, the patch in this video was made for recording so it's optimized (sonically) for FRFR systems. It would sound totally different if I plugged it into a guitar cab. But they great thing is you can change all the settings with snapshots

Hey Niall! I'll try my best to condense the information in a comment here. Impulse Response (IR) = a sonic snapshot of a speaker in a cabinet with a microphone. It acts as a digital cabinet for an amplifier. You can have IR's that model the sound of a band/album/song or you can have IR's that are a specific microphone on a specific speaker in a specific position. In your DAW you need an impulse loader OR an amp simulator with a cabinet/impulse loader. There you can use either real or digital amp signals with a .wav impulse response that simulates a speaker cabinet. Many guitar plugins have this feature, free and paid. The Helix is the flagship multi-fx processor of the company Line 6. It has effects for guitar, bass, and vocals, as well as digital amp models and cabinets (with adjustable mic and speaker settings), AND an impulse response block, where you can load your own IR files through the computer interface instead of using a digital or physical cabinet. I hope this helps and if would like anything clarified, I'll do my best to answer you here!

Great toan!!! Question though. When I try to do that drop thing with the pitch wham, I get this weird noise and it make some notes sound funny. Any solutions or ideas on what this could be?

+trevis jumper Thanks dude! Hmmm the only thing that I can think of is the obvious real, acoustic notes of normal tuning clashing with the pitched shifted notes that you hear through the helix. So like you hear both the normal notes AND the semitone shifted notes and it sounds like a dark muddy out of tune mess. BUT if that's not the case (easily check by recording the helix's output or headphoens), then I would maybe try writing down the settings of the Pitch Wham block and removing it, saving the patch without it, then add it back in with the same settings and see what happens. Also make sure that the mix control is 100% to get a fully "wet" effect without the unaffected tuning. Let me know if this helps. ALSO the next firmware is going to have a Simple pitch shift for this exact function. Should be out in a few days

@@pedroemilio189 So Bodom tunings have definitely changed over the years. I believe they started with D Standard and then began to go into drop tunings after that: Drop C and even Drop B for songs like Morrigan

I can hear Alexi's guitar cutting in and it takes away from hearing the full tone of the amp setting. ... also the real best part of the COB tone is heard mainly in the leads and solos, do you have demos of these? Ok, it just went to one of those sites that you cant get out without ctrl + alt + del and close the page from there. Some popups came and so on. I downloaded your patch and IR but I cant hear anything. is that for Variax? I just add that I read your instructions, mine didnt block up but still cant hear a thing. Well, its ok, I just wonder why some patches from Helix tones site are silent, one reason is that they are for Varix but some just dont work even they are made for regular guitar.

Pretty much anyone with a decent ear can create something which sounds like COB. You playing over everything doesn't give any REAL indication of the tone. Why not solo the guitar(s) and play with the mix well to truly hear it. I'm not sold on this alone
