Hey all, thanks for checking out the video! 😊As some of you may know, my Promare video got copyright claimed and banned everywhere, meaning I had to take the video down. As of this, the algorithm might not be in my favour for the next few videos, so I'd especially appreciate any likes or shares for this one. I worked super hard on it and I'm hoping some people are able to come away having learnt something new! Thanks for the continuous love and support!

One thing the manga excels at is the sense of dread. The pit in my stomach dropping at turning the page to a new striking image and instantly understanding that this means trouble.

As a graphic designer first & foremost before an illustrator, the first time I found out about Haruko Ichikawa's background in graphic design just made everything clicked in my head, it made so much sense why I resonate with her art style the most despite having seen & loving so many other mangaka's art styles. Her sense of symmetry, use of negative space, her compositions, how she layouts her panels & how she can conveys so much emotions with so little are just beautiful. Truly a complexity in simplicity.

I recently wrote my graduation thesis about the themes and character of LoL, but it's a shame I wasn't able to talk about Ichikawas visual style much. It's so distinctive, and in many cases I feel like it supports the story and its mood very well.

Oh wow, what a great manga to write on! In all fairness, talking about themes and characters alone would make for a large essay, if you'd have wrote about the visuals too, you'd have had a 10292 page essay on your hands 😂😂

@@linesinmotion Hell yeah, I always dread editing manga panels, and I don't even animate them like you do. I wanted to ask, given that Negative space is something used very often and intentionally Ichikawa, how do you feel about the anime adaptation? Do you think it captured the Spirit of LOTL?
@linesinmotion
@linesinmotion Жыл бұрын
I've yet to do a video on a super long series for this reason, I'd spend forever just editing 😂 And that's a good question. I personally feel Studio Orange nailed the adaptation as it didn't take anything away from the manga. Having it be 3d was perfect as it nailed the gem aesthetic that I don't think traditional 2d would have nailed. Being able to have the hair look translucent, the weight of them etc. The manga used a technique not utilised so much (in Ichikawa's capacity anyways), only felt fitting the anime did that, too. I loved it and I'm begging for a season 2 haha.

Another example where having people with different backgrounds can enrich whatever job/medium. Like how Tsutomu Nihei was an architect and it really shows in most of the work and is striking, unique, and important to the stories. Same with Land of the Lustrous, it's really incredible how different it is from other manga not even just visually but also in the story beats and how the conflict and resolution unfold.

I remember when I discovered Land of the Lustrous. It was through the anime, and when it ended, I was so frustrated because the story was becoming interesting ! So when I found out about the manga, I started reading it and was quite taken aback by Ichikawa's art style. It looked nothing like other "classical" mangas, and compared to the bright and colorful anime adaptation, the slender figures of the gems and heavily contrasted panels felt "weird". But the more I read it, the more I was fascinated by how simple yet effective her style is. It makes the moments of reflexion and loneliness even more impactful, and the fights grandiose. I also love how she draws clothes, the outfits the gems wear seem so light and fragile ! I am now up to date with the latsest chapter (102) and cannot get enough of her art

Wow! Your analysis is amazing! Typically when I come across works that utilize negative space... It gives me this dark and eerie feeling and to be honest I get scared because I'm afraid of what the plot has to offer in terms of searching through the darkness in the story being given at hand. But it's a good kind of scared! The scene in which Phos is literally held back by that negative space just gives me chills because it's "alive" in a sense. The emotion of fear being represented as an animated being. Also, funny you mentioned PTSD, I completely forgot about that whole scene up until now! I wonder why...

I love Haruko Ichikawa's simple lines, striking light and dark, and the perfect balance of negative and positive space in her paintings. @@linesinmotion: Awesome! I'm glad you've mentioned The Girl from the Other Side - visuals and overall excellence aside, I'd say that both titles carry a similar brand of melancholy. And thank you for not spoiling later reveals from HNK, especially those not covered by the anime! Question #1: do you plan on reading the two anthologies of Ichikawa's non-HNK stories? They are interesting, to say the least (she sure does like exploring the border between human and inhuman), but unfortunately still aren't available legally in English. I also recommend getting ahold of the "Party at the End" booklet, as well as the "Life and Culture" booklet. There's also the mini-artbook, but this might be harder to find. And, well, we don't talk about the card game... ;_; Also worth mentioning is the anime-adjacent book - the anime has a different aesthetic, but it's also beautiful, and the book can help with appreciating the backgrounds. Question #2: Why "infamous"? I'm asking as a person who has a mixed opinion of the Etheringtons. BTW, sorry to be That Person, but I think that people who don't know the series and/or who must read the subs due to, say, being deaf might appreciate the correction of "pauses of lunacy and attacks" to "pauses of Lunarian attacks". Also, is it "tauntingly bright" or "hauntingly bright" (the subs differ here)?

Negative space usage really does hit in a way that's different from seeing like, vast expanses of gorgeous environments. Really interesting to hear about Ichikawa's background as a graphic designer too, and how that altered the fundamental way they looked at their art. Cool stuff overall. As a semi plug-in, Hisa Masato's Area 51 also utilizes the sorta stark black-and-white high contrast hijinks that Land of the Lustrous has, but in that manga's case, it feels more like constantly dramatic lighting rather than the usage of negative space.

You could say that the author not just utilizes the negative space within the manga panels. Since after binge-reading up to chapter 100, my head has been filled with negative space. 10/10 fantastic art, endless suffering, would recommend.

How much can I feel in love even more with your channel? Is so amazingly done all the time. You put into words what I was trying to explain to a friend the other day (I even quoted CLAMP too, but it was with xxxHolic panels haha). Houseki no Kuni is such an introspective visual poem and I love people talking about it

You are the best manga related youtuber of all of those i've watched throughout the years, your edition is top notch as everyone else already said ! You actually motivated me to start a youtube channel for manga analysis in spanish so that more people can get interested in it. I actually wanted to know what apps do you use to edit so masterfully and how do you record your voice? Thanks in advance and keep it up

Hahah, actually studied graphic desing in uni as well and yeah, it makes sense that she did too- I think it also relates to how much of the fanart of HnK has the same feeling, as if more graphic-oriented people were the ones that resonated with her style the most, and so we have so many beautiful and artsy illustrations, instead of the more character/action oriented fanart other manga series have... Well, i've been trying to explain to myself that particularity of Hnk fanart for a long time

Thank you so much for bringing this absolutely gorgeous work! Apparently, this the third time you made a video essay of my top list favorite manga ever! I love your approach for each of your video, rarely people seek out the background of the mangaka as you would do, though the great work of art comes from the mind behind the pen. Your approach gives such insight on how the artist use their knowledges, experiences, and perspective to bring their world to the reader's eyes uniquely. You cover some obscure manga that I'd like to say "hidden gems", and I'd happened to read some of it. Thank you for covering the other two, Blue Period and Witch Hat Atelier, also Land of The Lustrous, all of them help me to keep moving forward. I don't even realize how "mere" manga can have such impact in my life, but I'm grateful to know them. And I'd like to tell you some of my beloved manga: Ancient Magus' Bride, Made in Abyss, Chion and the Cat Temple (also other Ojiro Makoto's work like Fujiyama and Insomniacs), After the Rain, Blue Giant, and many more!
