Hi Stefano, I’m a fellow Italian language learning enthusiast and I’ve been watching your videos with great interest lately (Finnish and Icelandic are both high on my wish list). The languages I have to maintain are less than yours and I’m lucky enough to use them all for my job (I’m an international sales manager in the food industry). Apart from my native Italian, I use English daily, and German, French and Japanese almost every week with my customers. I also have the chance to travel regularly to the countries where my target languages are spoken. What I also do is trying to use every hidden moment to practice my languages, be it going through my Anki desks on my phone, reading the news, watching a series or a film on Netflix or listening to podcasts. Conversations on Italkie are also a vital tool to keep them all up. I also try to rotate between them with some routines of active study (for example I am now focusing on mastering all jōyō kanji to be able to read more complex texts in Japanese). This routine also allows me to spend some time on new languages (I’m working my way through Swedish at the moment), while feeling I’m not neglecting any other language. I think it’s mostly a matter of integrating your languages into your lifestyle, and try to seize every opportunity to use them (and make mistakes!). Great question! Yes it actually has happened, even though it's pretty rare :) When I'm with my Italian friends I do sometimes start speaking German all of a sudden :D

It may happen to me that I start speaking Valencian to people here in Spain that I would speak mainly Dutch ( or German ) with. It's probably due to the fact that I speak both languages at a similar level having learnt both in self-study.

I've managed to learn four so far, but in this stage of my life I am more interested in maintaining, and keeping them on the native-like fluency level that I reached by being diligent. I was also incredibly lucky to discover that it is a minor practicing technique that makes all the difference. It is a small change in your everyday behaviour, but it is powerful. And I'll share it here: All polyglots know you have to push yourself in situations that demand communicating the language you're trying to learn or improve. While in these situations: 1.You have to listen to yourself while speaking. Be hard on yourself. Remember your mistakes. Dwell on them. 2. You have to be able to handle the pressure that comes with the decision to make mistakes. For example: when natives laugh at you. When not in those situations: 1.When you find a difficult word, a word that you're having trouble pronouncing, repeat it a gazillion times, put it in different sentences, try pronouncing it every time you're alone and read the language out-loud whenever possible. 2. Become a grammar nazi in every language you speak. Strive to improve your grammar so much , that you're the one doing the correcting when speaking with natives in a few years time. When you're feeling very comfortable with your grammar turn to administrative terms and phrases. Learn, in continuity. Repeat. To sum it up: *Practice* pronouncing all the time. Feel the fear of social pressure. Use the fear to be better. This is how we humans learn our native language in the first place. The self-created internal feeling of social pressure is a survival technique, use it, don't avoid it. Don't stop repeating a word untill your tongue (the physical organ) makes permanent adjustments in it's movement habits to allow you to automatically position it in such a way that enables you to be fluent. It takes time, but it also gets easier with time. Also reading out loud is a powerful exercise. Have the best of luck !

I’ve always wondered tho, why would someone need to maintain languages tho? Technically, if a word becomes part of one’s permanent memory and automatic memory aka the automatic mode, that word is to be remembered forever, automatically! Like, I learnt Spanish to a native speaker level in childhood in a 100% passive way and I never really used the language, and I haven’t seen or heard anything in Spanish in over a decade before I started learning languages on my own last year, and my Spanish is still native speaker level, I can understand videos in Spanish, even without having to use Spanish subs, and I can say what I want in Spanish automatically, without having to think about it, and I haven’t even studied Spanish grammar in my life, but I know all the verb forms and I can automatically use the verbs correctly, which means I haven’t forgotten the Spanish words / verbs and the sentences and the idioms etc that I have heard so many times in childhood, despite not doing anything to maintain them for years, so that’s why I don’t really understand why most learners have the feeling that they have to maintain the new languages to not forget the words...?! Does it happen often to others that, they forget many words that they used to know automatically? I would imagine that maybe certain words that one hasn’t seen enough times and that haven’t become part of the automatic mode yet, could be the type of words that one would temporarily forget if one didn’t see them in months or years, including words that weren’t used many times or that weren’t used at all? In such case, those words need to be revised more, until they can be remembered automatically, even after months... Because some words might need more repetitions in general, before they become permanent, but yea, it all depends on the word... If I ever have difficulty remembering a word in a language, I repeat the word again, and then if it happens again, I repeat it again, and so on, and eventually it becomes part of my automatic mode and permanent memory, so I can remember it automatically without having to think about it... There are always a few words like that, that need more repetitions or a lot more repetitions than most others, even in the prettiest languages ever like Dutch and Icelandic + Norse and Norwegian etc, which are as pretty as English, but luckily most words are easy to learn, so most words in these languages usually take me 2 to 5 repetitions over a period of time, plus I also watch everything with subs in the target languages, so I get a lot more éxpòsure to the new languages that way!

Re pronunciation, if one learns all the words real well with their pronunciation, and if one can instantly process each word, pronunciation usually comes naturally once one gets to an intermediate level or to an advanced level, especially if one knows each word with its pronunciation automatically, and if one imitates the exact sounds one hears (and imitating the mouth movements that natives make can also help other get the right pronunciation and get used to it, but for me this isn’t necessary because I can automatically pronounce the words properly if I know them and their pronunciation automatically) and, also adjusting the relaxedness or non-relaxedness level, because certain languages such as English / Dutch / German / Danish / Welsh / Breton / French / Brazilian Portuguese use a non-relaxed pronunciation, which means that the muscles involved in speaking are tensed up while speaking these languages, with English and Dutch use a 100% non-relaxed pronunciation, so, when speaking English and Dutch, the muscles involved in speaking must be tensed up to the maximum, while imitating the exact sounds one hears / heard / knows and automatically saying the word if one knows the word and its pronunciation automatically, which is how one can get the right American accent and speak English etc accent-free (that is, without an accent associated with one’s first language, which is created by one’s speaking habits / speaking patterns and one’s level of relaxedness or non-relaxedness) and, most languages use a relaxed pronunciation and a partially relaxed pronunciation, which means that the muscles involved in speaking are kept relaxed or partially relaxed when speaking most languages, so, if one wants to speak new languages accent-free, one must also consciously remember to not pronounce words in the new language the way one is used to pronouncing in the first language, and to pronounce the new languages in a non-relaxed way (if it’s one of those languages like English etc) or in a relaxed way (if it’s one of the languages that use a normal relaxed pronunciation) while imitating the exact sounds one hears, and to always learn the words real well, until they can be automatically remembered, and to learn each word with its pronunciation, so that one’s hern can memorize the exact pronunciation and get used to the sound and know what to do, because if one doesn’t know the words automatically with their pronunciation / spelling etc, the hern will not make the right connections and will not know what to do, so one won’t be able to speak accent-free and maintain the right pronunciation through the full sentence or sentences etc, so, one must first learn and know the words very well, including their pronunciation, before one tries pronouncing them accent-free, and for most it may also take some practice, so it may not sound exactly as a native’s pronunciation on the first try, but it will get better as one repeats more the words and keeps pronouncing them and imitating the sounds, and if one keep trying different accents / projections etc, one shall find the right ‘spot’ where it sounds exactly like native pronunciation, then after a while it should become something one can do automatically!

By the way, for me, native level pronunciation comes naturally, so if I know certain words or a sentence etc very well, I can easily get the right accent on those words and sentence etc, like, when I speak in Dutch or in Icelandic etc, it sounds like native speaker pronunciation, I can pronounce Dutch words and Icelandic words without American accent, I can easily ‘deactivate’ my American accent and adjust my speaking patterns to the other languages and their pronunciation rules, and I can do it naturally, without trying - however, for some reason, when I speak Spanish I naturally have very strong American accent if I don’t consciously try ‘to deactivate’ it by consciously relaxing my lips / muscles involved in speaking, and I don’t know why it’s like that only in Spanish, but I can still speak Spanish accent-free, because I know how to ‘deactivate’ my American accent, but if I didn’t know all these things and if I didn’t know what to do to get that accent ‘deactivated’ consciously, I wouldn’t be able to naturally speak Spanish accent-free like I can speak Dutch and Icelandic, so I could never understand why this happens, and why only with one language like Spanish!

Great content! And amazing pronounciation! My mother tongues are German and Finnish, which I use daily with my family and friends. I live in Norway and thus use Norwegian on a daily basis as well (having Norwegian as a base I can understand Swedish and Danish to a great extent). The same goes for English (plus internet). Then there is French, which I achieved a high level in, but then I had a long break, because it was interfering with my learning Norwegian. But I recently started getting comfortable with French again. I learned some Latin, Spanish and Italian at school and during university, but never attained or maintained a very high level. I can still understand a lot when reading (not Latin). The latest acquisition is Slovak which I have tried to mostly absorb passively. But now I am starting anew to attain a higher level. On my wish list I have Japanese and Welsh or Irish, can't decide 🥳

Estou a viver em Bordéus e posso garantir que a maioria da comunidade portuguesa a viver em Bordéus fala pior (quer em correção quer em pronúncia) que tu. Para além disso, a minha namorada é georgiana (aliás, foi através de um vídeo sobre o georgiano que conheci o canal) e ela disse-me que o teu georgiano é extremamente bom (estudando tu há pouquíssimo tempo. E acredita, estou a tentar aprender e é completamente impossível, quer em termos de aprendizagem da língua em si - para um nativo de uma língua latina não tem nada a ver - quer em termos de reprodução de sons que são únicos daquele idioma). Se juntarmos a isso o teu inglês perfeito (não percebo porque não te sentes à vontade!) e todos os comentários a elogiar a tua perfeição nas outras línguas que falaste, é simplesmente genial a tua habilidade para os idiomas. My tip for maintaining languages is if you like to play video games then you should buy PUBG and find teammates who speak language you want to speak. I am Romanian, and speak English, French and Spanish, and I also learned Italian without actually trying ( :D)...and at one point, a few years ago learned a little bit of Korean, which, unfortunately I haven't maintained... One trick that I use to learn and maintain my languages, (it might seem very goofy:D) is that I play Sims, and I change the language of the game to my target language 😅 Because you use everyday objects and actions it is very good for building up the vocabulary .. .Now that I've mentioned it, I might give it a go in Korean 😅

Yo ahora mismo hablo Catalán, Español, Inglés y Finés, y realmente tengo problemas para mantenerlas. Hi, your language skills are very impressing. You should try to learn one of slavic languages, they are far enough from the languages you have mastered already regarding grammar and vocabulary. The grammar is very tricky in those language family. My problem is that I did not maintain my german and I have to now recover it. I parallely study spanish, so it will be a two language learning practice. Of course english is now lingua franca and we are daily exposed to it in private life and at work, so it is naturally maintained, you do not need much to struggle.

O teu chinês soa tão fluente, embora não saiba nada de chinês para dizer se o teu chinês é ruim, medíocre ou mesmo bom. Ao tentares falar uma língua já é um bom sinal, e é um caminho que te leva a fluência. O teu português e espanhol são excelentes. Realmente é muito difícil arranjar tempo para aprimorares os teus conhecimentos linguísticos em todas essas línguas. Além disso tens a tua vida profissional. Se a tua vida profissional te deixar praticar/ treinar as tuas habilidades linguísticas já é um excelente treino. Também podes comunicar-te com os teus amigos e familiares. 20 minutos italiano/ chinês/ francês etc.

So when are you planning to take up Danish, Norwegian and Swedish? 😊 It's nearly a three for the price of one package - 80 - 90 % the "same" basic vocabularies and nearly the same grammars essentially ( just minor differences ) - like three dialects or accents of the same Scandinavian base language, just with slightly different spelling and different pronounciation and intonation, but still mutually intelligible to a high degree, if we just slow down and speak clearly / listen up and focus. And with many words that are (very) similar to their English counter parts, some to their German ( and Dutch ) ditto - and relatively simple grammars that have many features in common with a basic English.

For me I divide my life in a way that I can practice them. For example: My native is hebrew and it is reserved to my family and friends eventhough I don't use it so much because I don't live in Israel. In english I study and that's a huge part of my daily routine. Spanish I speak with my girlfriend so my daily life is spanish. (wie du bestimmt auch sofort merkst, es handelt sich nie um ähnliche Sprachen, das ist für mich sehr wichtig) - wie in einem anderen Kommentar gesagt, werde ich hoffentlich bald ein Video darüber mache, wie ich mehrere Sprachen gleichzeitig lerne, und warum! Hoffentlich hilft's anderen Lernenden ein wenig weiter... Ciao!

Perhaps you can make a video regarding your method of learning a new language. I noticed that you did not speak any Slavic language. I would highly recommend to you Russian. It will certainly be a lot easier than Japanese.

If you were brave enough to tackle Finnish then Russian will not be so scary. It has only six cases and the alphabet in easily learned. The challenge is vocabulary since it is so distant from Germanic and Romance languages. The other challenge is the free stress. Like English have to learn it word by word. And sometimes it changes in a word when the word is inflected. удачи тебе
