The manga version of this is even more painful, as after Link realizes what waking the Wind Fish would do to Koholint, he insists on leaving the island immediately, and inviting Marin to join him in doing so. He gets a boat, loads it with supplies, sets out with Marin and mans the oars, determinedly paddling away from Koholint... ...and goes nowhere. He rows for hours on end, but Koholint always looms on the horizon. Marin eventually has to stop Link from rowing, his hands bloody and blistered, and get him to admit there really is only one way for him off of Koholint... and one way for him alone.

And then you have to think... will you wake the fish to release him and free yourself or... stay there with Marin and the others... and maybe... just maybe... still have a nice life... your own happy ending.... But our friend is a hero and so he does what a hero would do... maybe not the right thing for himself... but for the windfish... because that is what heroes do... help others in the time of need

I don't know who's read the percy jackson books, but there is a scene in the books were Jackson ends up in a place where he meets (I think her name was Pleione) and he has to make a decision to spend eternity with her or head back to the real world and never be able to return, and have her suffer alone. That's what Link's Awakening reminds me of, that heartbreaking choice were you want to have both, but can only choose the choice that's right.

@@Gnowimaster He can't have a nice life as long as Nightmares wreck havoc on the Island. Koholint is full of dangers and enemies as a result. It's also mentioned in one of the dungeons that if Wind fish sleeps too long - the hero dies.

@@VikTimmy No, they changed it when they moved Link's Awakening to after A Link to the Past. That Link is no longer the same Link as in the Oracle games because that Link had never met Zelda, so it can't be the same Link.

In the manga, link actually quits and stops trying to wake the wind fish. He was ready to settle with Marin. However he is forced to continue. I’d be so bitter if I were that version of him.

Then again come to think of it, this is the nature of all Zelda games, you begin weak, slowly acquiring power and weapons, unlocking new areas, until you beat the game and everything goes back to an idyllic, pacifist setting, thus relinquishing all that you’ve come to accumulate (in Ocarina for instance, it even makes this expressly clear from the intro, you “borrow” the kokhiri sword, you don’t just “take” it...

She was another person, who was trapped in Koholint Island years before Link came in, and escaped as a seagull. If you investigate deeply, you will find out why Marin couldn't get off the island by returning as a hylian, rather than a seagull...

I remember when I was a wee lad I would just play the game but I didn't really know what to do so I was always stuck in Mabe village and the Forest. One day, my brain decided to fire a neuron. I sprinkled powder on the raccoon and obtained the key to the first temple. Soon after, I finished the game with tears in my eyes. This was the first complex game I was able to beat. I'm pretty sure it was also the first time I used my brain as a child lol.

The whole "it was all a dream" trope is so hard to pull off, since nothing mattered as nothing was real. However, LA exsicutes it brilliantly. Yes it was all a dream, but not Links dream. Which means, to link, everyone and everything he saw was real. His life was in genuine danger, and the wind fish sleeping could cause issues in the real world. Yes it was all a dream, but it was one of the most important dreams Link would ever experience.

This game hit me so hard, when I got through it as an adult. I think there's a theme here about allowing yourself to let go, in order to progress in life. Sometimes you have to leave a place that you love, let go of a relationship, move on to another job, even though staying where you are is the easy thing. Because if you don't, you can't grow. You won't change. Things may not get worse, but they also don't get any better. The experience is painful, but ultimately liberating. It's a very real, and very bittersweet lesson that everyone learns at some point.

The storm at the very start was likely due to the wind fish being forced to sleep, and have nightmares; after all, that would make sense why there was a volatile storm with the wind fish so nearby. When Levious was infected, the weather reflected his health and mood. It wouldn't be a stretch for this one to work the same way. It's kinda crazy we never got an answer as to who actually forced the wind fish to sleep in the first place (unless one of the Oracle games just happened to answer this, though i doubt it). I can't imagine some scrub moblins being able to do it in. Unless it was something natural however life-threatening parasites infecting it.

Amélie Barrois it's not the end, and actually mm is a very happy ending game. Can't say the same way abou ocarina though. Link lost his childhood, lost all of his friends and the only person who could understand him, forcing him to go in a quest after her, witch we all know from TP how it ends.

I agree. It has a very sad ending. Other sad endings in Zelda games is when Midna cries with emotion, and breaks the Twilight mirror right when she implied heavily that she loves Link. There is also that big quest ending in Majora's Mask where we see Anju and Kafei reunited and send Link away to safety, claiming they 'Will greet the morning... together'. Just like a true love couple. Not a game's end, but still, that part is haunting.

This whole theory video misses the quotes from the Owl Statues that give more insight into the whole story. One for example says that if the wind fish sleeps too long, the hero dies. Another one compares sleep to the ocean, and dreams with waves, both end in a crash. I thought the statue talking about death meant more like he would grow old in the dream and die. Like he could spend his life there (dying irl when he dies in the dream) or wake the wind fish and continue on with his real life. So like I thought it was less about motivating him to continue on with the quest and more of a question about whether its better to live blissfully in a false world or seek the truth even though there'd be no guarantee of happiness.

I'm currently playing LTTP for over the tenth time and somehow it still hasn't gotten boring or stale; it never will becasue as long as it's in 2D it had Perfected it's field back in 1992. Anything in this style is a cash-grab for me so I'd never pick them up

@@SkyLinkTheory Malon. Similar name, both sing, both bond with Link through music...while Link plays the ocarina. Both people and animals--horses in Malon's case--love her voice. Both teach Link an important song that connects them. Tarin and Talon are Mario if he were a layabout on drugs or a drunk running a ranch and deliverer of milk. I don't even know what Tarin is to marin, as she calls him by name.

Nintendo never really gave it much thought, and the official timelines were made long after the game was released (which is why BotW tries to do away with it all). However, if you consider that LA was released in 1993, and Ocarina of Time was around 1997, then you can see how it fits. Besides, in an interview around the release of OoT, it was mentioned Malon was deliberately modelled after Marin.

Nice. But there's something about human voiceovers, however well 'executed' that I don't like. I love the ethereal sounds and cryptic mumbles of the Sheika Monks in Breath. I think that's the height of 'voice acting'. If something is meant to be weird I guess, keep humans as far away as possible from it

Every so often I pull out my GameBoy Pocket and replay Link’s Awakening. But nothing comes close to the hollow feeling I had as a kid when I finally beat the game. Each dungeon I beat, I got further ahead of my mum (who rightfully owned the game cartridge), and I got more and more excited while the plot went over my head. The countless deaths while trial and error were my only guides. Finally completing the trade quest to decipher the book for the egg’s directions, saving before the egg to hear the Ballad over and over again…to the final loosed arrow that ended the Nightmares. Seeing a giant whale on the screen was confusing but as the triumphant bitter-sweet melody played whilst the island disappeared pixel by pixel, something in my young mind snapped. Tears streamed down while my eyes remained glued to the screen. This was my first experience with the Zelda franchise and it still remains one of the most moving games in my heart. And the third time I beat the game, I saw Marin’s “fairy form” (the DX version did it more justice haha). The Switch version was an easy preorder and I had tears of joy when I saw it announced. Nintendo really spoiled me with this one!

When you find Tarin as a racoon in the mysterious forest. He's clearly have some mushrooms (Amanita muscaria) in his bag. Those mushroom are highly psychoactive. So what is Tarin doing as a "racoon" in the mysterious forest? He's clearly tripping his balls off. Seriously.

Tarin was based on Mario and the racoon he both mentions and was at the start was a reference to the racoon power up he had in super Mario bros 2 on the snes. Also the mushrooms themselves are a reference in itself being called toadstool

7:24 The direct translation from the Japanese game is: Legends Of Zelda : Island Seen in Dream or Dream Island Something along those lines. So it was kinda obvious, however I’m glad they changed the name in the english release, it gives more space for players to think on what’s happening. Such an amazing game.

Even though many people are upset with this ending, it actually brought a smile to my face. It teaches us the epistemology of loss and that to not cling onto something you cannot have. In the end it was all a dream and we helped a deity free from his slumber. Even if we wouldn't awaken him, the whole island would be plagued with monsters. Thankfully the wind god fulfilled her dream!

I love this game so much and this remake is just wonderfully made. When you're inside the egg in the final chamber before you jump down into the final boss room, don't jump yet and listen for a while. I will give you a spoiler here, don't read on if you haven't tried it yourself yet: You can actually hear the wind fish sing. It was one of the beautiful things they have put into this remake. I'm sad to having played through the game. Once again.
