Just a reminder - the new system is four AT4W episodes per week, once a day from Monday through Thursday.
Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara reviews a comic 2099 comic with an original character!
atopthefourthwa...
Originally uploaded May 27th, 2013.
ORIGINAL INFO: Fighting pollution has never looked this stupid.
RUMINATIONS: The code that premiered in this episode STILL hasn’t been resolved two years later. There has been the occasional person (only one or two that I can recall) who have solved it, but otherwise I’ve been playing the long game with this one. Actually, I say that, but really it was supposed to be resolved this year - it’s just production of the movie forced the storyline to be pushed back.
90s Kid’s visit to the future hinted at a few specific things, the biggest being Linkara’s new coat that he’d premiere at the end of the then-coming “Ghost of the Machine” arc as well as the crossover with the Nostalgia Critic for Les Miz. Doug was planning that one long in advance and thus secured my cooperation with it early.

Stan lee is the rich grandfather of comics while Frank miller is the drunk racist uncle. Lee is stuck in the past but is still fun and we all enjoy his company. Miller is the guy you throw out of thanksgiving for calling your christian middle eastern wife a terrorist.

Stans Style of writting is 60s and he never really changed. But heres something he does really well. Establishing characters, motives, a world and an enviroment all in one issue! While other writters feel the need to do it in 12 issues, that may help with passing and with the flow, but when its not needed, dont do it! Its something i really admire in him. He always said he wanted to write a novel, he never did, its kinda sad. But i guess Spideys run counts as one big novel doesn't it. :)

I think the reason people defend Miller and not Stan Lee is simply due to the generation gap. I imagine many who watch these videos grew up when Miller was at his best and read his books religiously as teens. However I doubt anyone here was even alive when Lee was at his best, or have read much of his work outside of re-prints and anthology books.
@roguishpaladin
@roguishpaladin 4 жыл бұрын
No. When people defend Miller, it's because they, consciously or unconsciously, embrace the same hateful beliefs that Miller does. They've learned that if they attack those who criticize bad behavior, the critics are forced to defend themselves instead of use their efforts to continue criticizing bad behavior (and sometimes just stop because it's not worth it). If the critics stop criticizing bad behavior, then bad behavior becomes normalized. After all, why fight any misogynist, racist, or homophobic impulses you might have if no one is going to call you on it?

Are people really serious about Frank Miller and Stan Lee. Stan had way more of an impact on comics than Frank.
@Jeddostotle7
@Jeddostotle7 8 жыл бұрын
Well, Frank did have a big impact on comic books. He (along with Alan Moore and others) introduced a new kind of grittiness that DC saw was successful, and continually tried to replicate. It was unsuccessful, working less and less each time, until finally we got to the New 52, where (almost) everything was needlessly dark, gritty, edgy, and hopeless, with none of the fun and levity that used to be more prominent in comics, especially in DC. DC finally seems to be realizing that, as demonstrated in DC Rebirth, and hopefully they change course for the better.

I think this was the comic Steve Ditko was meant to come back to Marvel to work with Stan on, but backed out, stating he disagreed with the story's "philosophical underpinnings." Probably he meant the anti-industrialist slant the whole corporate dystopia implies. If so, it's a shame they couldn't turn it around somehow. I'd love to see what Ditko would do with a cyberpunk environment. As an aside, if Lee actually scripted this (it reads like it), it's another good example of why he should stick to the "Marvel method."

I watched this video way back in the day when it was first uploaded on the old site. 2099 month got me interested in the 2099 universe as I've enjoyed other Marvel alternate futures like MC2. I've read some of the series here and there over the years, but I only recently started reading 2099 in its entirety. So for this read through, I'm reading ever issue of every 2099 series in a recommended order. In that context, Ravage 2099 is not bad at all. As part of the larger whole, it contributes to the overall world building. There are obviously problems with this comic but several of the things pointed out in this video do actually have answers and make sense. I wouldn't call Ravage one of the strongest 2099 comics, but I think it's okay. Anyway, I know this is an old video and all, but thanks for this and all your videos!

I noticed a trend. In general, the worst of Marvel (exceptions being stuff like Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum. And Marville) tends to be stupid and trite, but still at least a little entertaining. Probably because with Marvel, alternate universes are still kinda cannon. The worst of DC tends to be offensive, boring, lazy, AND stupid. Probably because with DC they're like "just slap an Elseworlds label on the cover and it's no longer cannon, meaning the characters can act however we want and no one can get mad!" I'm not saying that this is always the case or I KNOW this to be true, but that does seem to be the trend just from watching Linkara.
@SeekerLancer

+David Spring Marvel has its offensive moments. Original Sin and One More Day are two examples modern examples. For more classic comics, Avengers #200 is one of the worst mainstream comics ever. But yeah, on average most of Marvel's worst moments (Clone Saga and The Crossing immediately come to mind, the latter of which Linkara really, really needs to review) are just dumb while many of DC's worst moments make you feel like you need a shower.

As much as I love the colour and vibrancy of the 1990's comic scene, a LOT of it was inspired by Rob Liefield - zany hair, hyper-militaristic outfits, story and character traded for violence and spectacle. Ravage really seems to exemplify a lot of those lazy tropes. And kind of reminds me how lucky we are with the comics we get nowadays.The industry is about a thousand times better for growing out of this kind of nonsense.

You know, I think that scene in the garbage dump at the end actually *could* work if Ravage was insane, like if he'd been struck on the head or was depicted as having snapped due to everything that happened. There's just something about the talking to himself, the suit he put together, and choosing the almost 100-year-old garbage truck that you could really get behind if he was completely nuts, like The Creeper or Freakazoid...

Linkara's example of N64 titles (something which started with the SNES and continues to this day) made for an especially easy way to identify products for said console(s). Have I gone full plebe then? I did enjoy the Ravage stories back in the day. They weren't anything too special but they were interesting enough. To me they gave me a look into the worst the 2099 world was, the under belly and ugliness of being under a corporate controlled atmosphere. But I was 11 at the time.

+Mario Wendorf You were 11 at the time, so your tastes changed and you may have encountered stories that did what Ravage did, but better. And even if you didn't you shouldn't feel less of a person for liking something not a lot of other people like.

0:50 This is NOT one of the worst comics of all time. It's not even the worst Marvel comic that isn't Marville, Ultimate Power, or One More Day that Linkara has done on his show. It's dumb, the artwork is passable at best, and it was clearly only written because nobody could say no to Stan Lee, but anyone who would put this on their Worst of List is blissfully unaware of so much crap. I envy them, and I suspect Lewis does as well.

I just noticed this because Stan Lee has done this before but is...... Is DethSryke suppose to be Stan Lee parodying Dr. Doom? For those unaware, Jack Kirby always used to gag with Stan about how HE was Dr. Doom back in the golden days and so I guess Stan actually did it as Tribute. That's sweet

Skimming a summary of 2099 long after these videos came out, I feel a bit sad from what the summaries say eventually happened to Ravage. Things didn't really turn out too well for him, it kinda bums me out, unless there's details in the actual storylilne over a synopsis that makes it more reasonable what happens to him.

Well, if I must... How dare you make fun of Stan Lee?! He’s a great man who has helped propel the industry forward! You are a terrible human being for even thinking about doing so! I know nothing about Stan Lee outside of his cameo craze, but my complaints will hopefully balance out whatever needs to be balanced about Miller

I know it had flaws, yet I still maintain that Bluddgunn 2099 Part 2 was the best of the film series. That fight between Bluddgunn and X-TREME made it worth it. Sure, Radi-Kill from Part 3 was a better villain, but they cheaped out with the hologram effects. I'm just surprised they made a Part 5 after Part 4 featured the worst villain, Cyber-Wyre.
