I genuinely think this series is a fascinating experiment. It shows just how different the movies could have been. I think Mr. Lucas did a great job streamlining these ideas, but it's still a lot of fun to essentially see the beta of a finished product!
@teruienages9626 ай бұрын
Mr. Lucas didn't do anyything to streamline these ideas.... it was everyone ELSE around him helping him out with all of that. Lucas has always been a bit of a hack and a terrible writer. The only reason any of the Star Wars films ever really amounted to anything was because of the many people that wrangled his unfocused, badly plotted and bizarre ideas in check and worked to re-mold them into a coherent form.

To answer your question, the reason Sith only have Red Lightsabers is because Kyber Crystals (Which appear in almost all colors but red, but most commonly blue and green), the core of the lightsaber, are semi-sentient and refuse to be used for evil. If a Sith made a Lightsaber from a normal Kyber Crystal, it wouldn't work. So they channel their anger and hatred into the crystal, a process called "Bleeding" that basically tortures the crystal into submission. The process turns the crystal red. Fun fact: White is also not naturally occurring. It only occurs when a Jedi recovers a bled Kyber crystal and rehabilitates it.

Is that how it is now or how it was before Disney?
@Rikmach4 ай бұрын
@@keyblademasterclark It's a Disney invention, but I think it's a pretty neat one- I think it was Introduced in the Darth Vader comic in 2017? If I recall correctly, the original explanation in the old lore was that Red light saber crystals were artificially created ones, and since the Sith did not have access to the places they formed naturally (since Jedi built temples there), they defaulted to the artificially created red ones. And that's a perfectly serviceable explanation, but lacks the same drama, you know? I think that Sith have to corrupt their crystals is a nice reflection and resonance with their own fall, don't you think?

This version feels a lot more Battlefield Earth, in a weird way. In the movies, the heroes help the Ewoks fight the Empire, but they don't teach them to fly fighters and utilize advanced technology. Their natural tactics of turning the jungle against their enemies proves effective enough all on its own. Meanwhile Battlefield Earth is also about the hero teaching his 'primitive' faction how to pilot jets and such. I can see why they left this aspect behind, given the Vietnam War analogy they were constructing it as. The Vietnamese didn't win that war because someone gave them a bunch of advanced weaponry and taught them how to use it. They won that war by knowing their homeland better than their enemy did, and crafting it to their advantage.
@CosmoShidan6 ай бұрын
One thing that bothers me about Battlefield Earth is, where do those cave people get their food? The book explains that they live off of cattle, which is declining, yet it's not explained why they don't just move to another land where food is abundant, like actual nomadic pastoral peoples. This is one of my problems with how science fiction depicts nomadic peoples; their culture is determined by their means of gathering food and the geography they live in, such as the terrain. Hence, why not hire cultural anthropologists to write indigenous populations rather than exoticize them? Star Wars and Star Trek could never get this right, though one exception is the French comic series Valerian. Also, yes the North Vietnamese and Vietnamese National Liberation Front DID possess advanced technology when fighting the Americans, in concert with basic weapons. That is, they used the latest Soviet weapons systems, such as radar guided SAM batteries, anti-aircraft guns, the AK-47, the T-59 and T-64 tanks, the MiG-17 and MiG-21 interceptor jets, to transport helicopters, transport planes, transport trucks, mortars, RPGs, early warning radars, two-way radios, and medicine from China. Meanwhile, they used basic hand tools to build and expand their underground tunnel city base, bicycles, elephant traps, snares, rope traps, blowguns, and slingshots when it came to using low tech weapons.

@@CosmoShidan They don't move because they are scared of the Psychos attacking them while they move/ followed them back if they venture out. It's why his introduction shows Johnnie as a man of action because he insists on going out to look for food/new land while the rest of his people have fallen into apathy and the fears actually turn out to be true as he get's captured.

It does fit given Battlefield Earth was written in the style of 'pulp' sci fi books of the past, the style of which [with serials like 'Flash Gordon'] where a big influence on Star Wars.
@CosmoShidan6 ай бұрын
@@jamesatkinsonja Yeah, that's the thing that bothers me, because as someone who took cultural anthropology, the scientific inaccuracy of how actual nomadic peoples behave and live comes off as outdated even at the time it was written. Plus, the dichotomy behind primative/advanced in the pseudoscience of social evolutionism, was already obsolete when Star Trek, Star Wars, and Battlefield Earth were written. Cultures don't develop by a hierarchy of technology and art, it's the spread of information and geography in accordance with the scientific law of cultural relativism of cultural anthropology. Plus it's pretty racist.

Anytime something happens that is inconsistent to physics in any Star Wars medium. (i.e.: fiery explosions in the vacuum of space, someone walking though open space without breathing protection.) I remember how George Lucas justified Jango Fett’s sound bombs in the Attack of the Clones dvd commentary. “It’s Star Wars Physics, it works because it is a different universe than ours.” 🤷♀️

Next video should be Secret Wars 2. I am so looking forward to seeing Linkara's take on that Zod awful dumpster fire of Jim Shooter's attempt to shove cheap philosophy into the story. A curiosity is that the comic was initially offered for Sal Buscema to draw and Sal was a working machine delivering page after page, maybe almost there with Jack Kirby page count, and he wanted nothing to do with it. Word had gone around the Marvel offices that Shooter had so many script revisions and changes during Secret Wars 1 that the artist Mike Zeck ended up sick with all the redrawings and extra work so nobody wanted to draw this project. It fell on Al Milgron who was no fan favorite but was there to do the job.

While there wasn't really enough meat to make it work, I do like the concept of adapting earlier drafts of iconic works. I'd really like to see Tolkien's Book of Lost Tales done (the proto-Silmarillion but with a framing device and a bit less stern-epic tone), maybe as an animated series.

Seeing this series it’s crazy to me how many concepts that get scrapped or altered get reused wholesale in extended material in both legends and canon. Valorum being a sith to the end but deciding to work with the “good guys” for more seemingly pragmatic reasons rather than ideological (hence why he’s still a sith) seems to mirror Merton in fallen order being a dark side user that works with a jedi to fight in the rebellion is interesting. It makes me feel like I’m watching cats and dogs live together. R2’s design gets reused in rebels as chopper and the wookies from earlier drafts become the lasat. The Jedi bendu gets shortened to Jedi but bendu becomes a concept in relation to the light and dark side of the force which to me indicates that the Jedi we’re seeing here are more like what fans refer to as gray Jedi (which aren’t real and also a stupid idea because that’s actually not how the force works, it’s coldsteel levels of “look how cool and different I am”) in that they aren’t as rigid as what we got. They’re less stoic, allowing attachment and possessive relationships. Imho in the current canon an emotional Jedi inevitably becomes a sith 99% of the time and hence why an in between is stupid.
