Lintels are going in! Episode 36

Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.

Bringing Toby into your garden with the other animals and with you guys is such a good idea it makes him a part of everything and he can befriend the other animals rather than being set apart from everyone, you are doing an amazing job with him. The farm house is coming along nicely too.

Awwww, Toby watching the chickens in his stable 🤣😂 and then at the gate watching the lintel being fitted and the cat checking out the metal roof beam. Love seeing all the animals and am impressed with Toby walking out on the halter rein.Honestly reversing the car and trailer is more difficult than you’d think but it was a wee bit funny 🤪Amazing stone work and very professional and tidy. They look HEAVY 😩The lintels are great. Great progress with the pointing too. Just love this build ✅✅✅✅✅

I laughed as the lintel Onyx was on is called a catnic lintel! Sam's back is ok so far but not ideal lifting all those stones. I think he will be glad when the walls are done!

My heart swells for Toby. To be isolated in that field for God knows how long and now to be in a barnyard family. Great job rescuing the sweet creature. Love the car backing up bit 🤗. Thanks it is slow but steady progress. Still aiming for the roof to be on by the end of May or at least the timbers! Toby is definitely more at home here now. Just hope his gelding helps.

Stone lintels are such an improvement and will last as long as the building itself. Such a smart move to remove wood and replace with stone. If budget and timeline allow, I wouldn't retain any wood lintels even if some of the wood is currently structurally sound. What a wonderful menagerie of dog, cats, hens, rooster and donkey (and wandering sheep). Your homestead is so wonderful. Thank you for sharing your progress. Well done!

I think most are going to be honest. Sam took some of the window casements out the other day for measurements for our new windows and we realised more needed replacing than we thought.

The stone work on the house is just so pretty. The pointing makes all the difference, and it looks so clean and tidy! And the new lintels are beautiful! Those old wooden ones were turning to dirt. Good job on the lintels! They look really good! Now, a couple of lessons on how to reverse a trailer from Becca and you'll regain your Superman status! Lol! Toby doesn't seem all that worried about wandering around in the yard. He probably likes being closer to you all. Glad you've got some sun. We are currently having a very wet snow/rain. Well done becky with the trailer. I hate reversing with a trailer on but I have had to just get on with it as there is only me here my husband makes it look so easy as he is hgv driver. I did 50 trips to the tip with garden waste last year. I have 1.3 acres of mainly over grown woodland that hasn't been touch in 20 years. Sam your doing a great job with the stone work. I took down a garden wall this week thought it would only take a day it took about 3 days it was well stuck together and have a lovely piles of stones for other jobs, found 3 lizards 2 baby snakes and a toad in there all saved and put safely in the other wall.

It's not that easy to reverse a trailer feels like or makes you feel uncoordinated! I am shocked at how slow a process it is! Takes such a long time when building with stones.

Well on Sam with getting those Lintels done ! Picking out which stones to use is a daunting task with all you have to pick from ! Then piecing them together just what dreams are made of ! Bet you dont need any rockin at night to go to sleep ! But it is coming right along will be done in no time ! The shorter the trailer the harder it is to reverse ! Longer trailers no problem ! Threw me off with the later posting time ,I had my cup of tea and scones ready for this morning !

When you take down the walls to join through between buildings, double ton bag the stones then order some stuff from builders merchants and ask them to lift the bags out to where need with lorry crane when they come to deliver.

The pointing looks amazing , was good to see it for real camera doesnt do it justice at all I'd say you've outdone the novice phase.. Sam yer stone building is looking really professional too . Don't worry about doors being higher or lower than Windows , of you look around at other cottages theyre all different. Even here in our 1960s cottage doors are different heights. Its just how it was done . Function over aesthetics. have a great week. 👍👍

I'm from a brick-layers culture, so it took me quite some time to appreciate this tinkering around with natural stone. But little by little I lost my impatience watching the fitting and trying and adjusting and readjusting that y'all are doing.

It's a time consuming task the stone work and yes it's hard to watch if your from the fast paced bricklaying background. I think it's hard for Sam bot to get frustrated at times hence his thoughts on using blocks at the back. They won't be seen but will speed up the process.
