I was an extremely happy OnePlus 3T user for over 5 years and I just recently changed it for a Pixel 6. It was an excellent phone and it represented the peak of OnePlus in my opinion. They did make a few great devices after it (the 7 series was a standout in particular) but the truth is that every single iteration from the 3T onward moved them more towards generic mediocrity and further away from the reasons many of us loved the brand in the first place. I have a OnePlus 7 Pro. Based on all the reviews of their more recent devices, it seems to me like this is the last good phone they made. I love this phone and have no plans to change it. The only minor drawbacks are that there's no wireless charging and a software update added an annoying "accessibility options" shortcut that I can't remove and keep accidentally pressing. Apart from that, it works like a charm and I have no plans to change it any time soon. Edit: I just managed to remove the accessibility options menu. Kind of heartbreaking. My dad got a OnePlus One back in 2014, telling me that it was considered to be the best phone in the world at that time (flagship killer and all, I guess). That's what introduced me to the brand. He ended up upgrading and gave me his OnePlus One, and looking back, it was absolutely among the best phones I had. I was 15 then and have stuck with OnePlus ever since. Even my brother has noticed my commitment to the brand and, despite all the changing trends, I've stuck around because I just really loved what OnePlus was doing. And now I'm worried that my next upgrade is going to have to be something else. The timing of this video is crazy for me because I've been thinking about this a lot lately as I recently factory reset my OnePlus 6T because I had so much useless material on it and it was getting unbearably slow and almost impossible to operate normally. My dad recently upgraded to a OnePlus 8 Pro and says he's really liked it so far, but I told him that a lot of what I've been reading is that OnePlus has really dropped the ball over the past few years and that my phone, the 6T, was basically their last really good phone. Thankfully, after my factory reset, I can see my phone lasting me at least another year or two because I don't care an awful lot about having the latest phone hardware, but I hope that when that point comes, OnePlus has cleaned up its act and gone back to what made them such a unique choice back in 2014.

My 5 cents to this is that as long as OP released phones once or twice a year, we were in better hands, as the devs only needed to support a limited number of devices. Now when they have two versions of the primary phone, plus the T models, at least two? versions of Nord and then some Asia only models, it's getting wild. So, as Linus put it, they need to focus! If they want to have a phone in three different price groups fine, but maybe leave it at that. Three phones per year is enough. Apple is doing at least this one thing correctly.

I've absolutely loved my OnePlus 9 pro but it took months after launch to finally have many of the simple bugs I had issues with to be fixed. I didn't have issues with the storage dumping but I had issues with so many UI, texting, calling, and maps features. I've waited it out now and I haven't run into many of those bugs I used to have in a while. I definitely love the camera and OS of the phone with the fast charging and super responsive screen I will probably stick with my OnePlus 9 pro for a while. It's not like new mobile processors coming out are outperforming the snapdragon 888 significantly and charging is surpassing the 65w. Also there is no point in higher resolution or higher than 120hz on a phone.

Ok yeah, I'm feeling this. My OnePlus 6T recently broke (and I was already experiencing issues with it but I'd had the phone for well over 3 years) so I decided to just get the Nord phone. While yes, I understand I went from a (at the time) high end phone to something more entry level, the amount of frustration I have felt with this Nord is outstanding. Chat bubbles don't work correctly, sometimes not even appearing, apps not displaying properly and I'm a few instances popping up off center so part of the app is off screen, and the keyboard being so laggy on a messages screen that it will freak out when typing fast. At this point I think I'm tempted to try and get my 6T repaired and just keep the Nord to run my idle games.

@MultiWirth2 жыл бұрын
fun fact: OnePlus started with a cooperation with Cyanogen Inc. (known for CyanogenMod) and they actually made the software for the OnePlus One, called Cyanogen OS 11 based on KitKat. But OnePlus initially broke up with them due to the bugs and issues, Cyanogen Inc. wasn't able to fix in time (or at all) so they hired devs from the formerly Paranoid Android team and created OxygenOS. Seeing them getting into the same mess makes me wonder, if anyone from the initial OOS devs is still around in the company. OnePlus once was known for stable, clean and feature rich software that had many great stuff from custom ROMs. So basically the custom ROM, that isn't a custom ROM. Very sad. Seems like the last vendor who cared about customers also no longer cares about anyone but themselves and the good old days of custom ROMs also are over due to the restrictions google had been making the last few years ( SafetyNet for example). So nowadays you can choose between a bloated, messy OS or an clean, fast, free and lightweight OS, that can't be used for online banking, doesn't play netflix in HD and so on. The big issue here is: LineageOS comes unrooted out of the box but since a bootloader unlock on modern devices can already break certain things, it's almost impossible to enjoy. Old devices will not suffer from this but google just implemented hardware assisted detection routines for an unlocked bootloader on more recent devices. I think i will just use my OnePlus 3t yet another year. Sadly, google made sure old devices with anything before linux kernel 4,9 will no longer work with Android 12 (at least RIL = mobile data, sms, calls as it seems) so people are actually forced to upgrade their hardware, unless there are devs who take the huge effort to backport the whole stuff needed by android 12 OR port a newer kernel which isn't easy either. So yeah there you have it.

I'm so glad you guys are addressing this. I've had a OP 3, 6 and 8 pro, and with the latest OS12 update that merged in ColorOS, it kind of sealed the deal for me that I won't be buying another OP phone (unless they decide to switch back to Oxygen for some reason). It's been so sad watching them fall from grace. The only thing I disagree with is that I think OP HAS changed, a lot. They used to be pretty minimalist to save on cost. But over time, they started doing unnecessary brand deals with companies and celebs like Hasselblad and RDJ; spending R&D on gimmicky features most people will never ever use like an IR camera; shipping their phones bloated with apps I don't necessarily want like Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, Amazon, Prime video, Messenger, etc; spending more and more money on marketing instead of passing savings onto the consumer (which I guess I understand), and most importantly moving away from the stock android game which alienates some of their most important customers. The company was built on enthusiasts who loved their near-stock OS, and they're turning their back on that enthusiast foundation in hopes of drawing in a larger market. But I think that's going to backfire. Enthusiasts helped them grow by word of mouth, and now I think they're going to cause their collapse by word of mouth. At least in the US market.

Didn't need it, the 3T was still working fine but I wanted to support OnePlus and also get the little bit better camera. Everything after that didn't intrieve me so much, so I waited. Then came the 8 pro. It was definitely alot more expensive, but my 5T's fast charging stopped working so I decided to upgrade because of that, and also for the much better camera and display. Both the 3T and 5T I've handed out to friends to use and they are both still working fine. Even the 5T fast charging started working, not sure what was the problem. I'm still using the 8 pro but I'm gonna need a new one soon. The battery life has decreased significatly and I have weird bugs where the phone judt freezes for a while. When I lock the phone and open it again, it works fine. This happens pretty seldom, propably once every week or two weeks. Rarely more than once in a day. I just switched to an S22+ from a OP7T. They have a "Goodbye" thread on their forums where you can see this has been going on for a while. They increased the price, decreased their quality and neglected their once loyal supporters. Picking up an S22 is a no brainer, especially since they are often on sale for hundreds of dollars less than the Oneplus flagships. If they cannot listen to their community I hope they at least listen to you Linus.

I recently got my hands on the OnePlus 9 and it was only because I had only one very precious game that could not save on cloud and it was on my previous OnePlus 7T. The reason why I needed a new phone was because of only 2 issues. 1st was that my phone was basically locked away from at&t's servers because they made a change that was like "we only support 5g phones now" so I wasn't able to call or use mobile data. but the 2nd issue was much worse. My very first softwire update just broke the phone. It takes ages to start the phone from a restart, It was overheating much faster, and worst of all, when I was gaming say like on Brawl Stars and I had my left thumb on the screen and moving it was all right but when I wanted to aim and shoot my movement is just dancing across my screen and it didn't allow me to move until I got my finger off and then it would work, just not for long though. same thing was actually with when I want to type something, it just types for me and clicking characters that aren't even close so that it could be mistaken as a typo.

Glad we could have some coverage of OnePlus from your team, thank you everyone! I currently own a OP 8 Pro & massively regret having accidentally upgraded to Android 12 - the update in the phone didn't explain that not only would I be upgrading to Android 12, but there would be huge changes to OxygenOS, most of which are straight downgrades if not outright bugs. I really wish there were other competent Android phones that had a hard notification slider, I would likely jump to those in a heartbeat, but so far that is the one main thing holding me from switching off OP.

Updates, or lack there of, on my 7 Pro, are what pushed me towards an iPhone 13 Pro Max. The software was pretty good, but as soon as it got Android 11, the experience became crappier, with things such as huge shutter lag, where I take a picture of a subject, but it processes 1 second after I took the picture. Also, the monthly updates gradually became updates every 2 months to now being updates every 3 or 4 moons, with security patches being out of date by 1 or 2 months when they come out. Idk how come people talking about this just now, but when people talk about apple comparing to eveything else, it mostly goes down to software issues. Android phones always lack of good tuned software starting from basic functionality bugs and simple interface stuttering to complete disaster bugs breaking all system. OOS11 is still smooth and mostly fine (not without bugs tho), but 12 is a disaster. I rolled back to 11 after a week and my device feels good again, but if I was about to buy a new phone this year - I would have a really hard time to pick one. If you paid close attention, you would've seen their downward trajectory this entire time. OnePlus One was great. Against the Sony Xperia Z3, Samsung Note 3, LG G3, Moto X and HTC One M8, it held up nicely. 1/17 or First Place. OnePlus Two... plagued by the QSD 810. QC issues, low availability, just bleh. 17/17 Last Place. OnePlus 3 got rid of CyanogenMod, in-turn for OxygenOS. This was sort of a downgrade but that was the fault of CM's leader, and their downfall caused LineageOS creation. But I will say this was their second most competitive device after the original model. 2/17. OnePlus 3t upped the price, but it also upped the storage, memory, and clockspeed. Their third most competitive device. 3/17. OnePlus 5, upgraded the build to a scratch-resistant series-7000 aluminium unibody. But the design was a downgrade as an iPhone 7+ copy. The camera and performance barely got improvements, yet the price increased slightly. Again a great device overall, their fourth most competitive device. 4/17. The OnePlus 5t was a weird choice. Price went up slightly, but the hardware didn't improve. The device did get less optimised and less compact due to the 18:9 display. Not really a great device anymore. 7/17. OnePlus 6 finally saw better performance but battery life hadn't improved. The camera got slight upgrades but were far behind the competitors since the S7 and Pixel 2. The size also got larger/less compact or efficient. An okay device. 10/17. OnePlus 6t was the most meaningless variant. They got rid of the Headphones Jack. And upped the price. The notch got smaller but so what. This was not a good phone. 12/17. And the OnePlus 7 was similar to it. 13/17. OnePlus 7pro at least TRIED to do something different with the pop-up camera. The device was much faster than before, and had much longer battery life. Camera finally got big improvements but hadn't caught up yet. But it was now super-fragile because it wasn't properly Water-Resistant, Glass Everywhere, Curved, Slippery and Heavy. A good phone, but not as competitive as their previous instances. I'd give it eighth-place for competitiveness. 8/17. Same goes for OnePlus 7t-Pro which just came out slower and later. 10/17. OnePlus 7t was better. It was more ergonomic, still fragile, but cheaper. It was their sixth most competitive device. 6/17. OnePlus 8 was a disappointment. Very similar in-standing to the likes of the 7 and 6t. 15/17. The OnePlus 8t didn't offer much over the original 8, and had compromises. 14/17. OnePlus 8pro, meanwhile was very similar to the 7pro. Except the camera got a huge upgrade, and they were competing with flagships. A good device held back by it's price, but still holds up today when it comes to software, battery life, performance, and camera. Goes into fifth place in Hall of Fame. 5/17. OnePlus 9 Pro didn't offer anything more than the above. It was a sidegrade in camera, battery life, and performance. But the price was even higher. 9/17. OnePlus 10pro wasn't released in the Western Markets. It had serious structural issues, fragility, same high price, and offered no improvements from the 9pro when it came to camera, battery life and performance. Not to mention software. Very very disappointing. 16/17.

Still, I hope Oneplus gets back on track.

I'm so disappointed I couldn't continue, but I've found OP to be pretty similar but also with some new stuff I like. There's a lot of phones id love to try from smaller/other companies with innovative designs but I'd have to get a whole different service plan or buy the phone unlocked and get a SIM with minutes, etc.

I've been rockin' the OnePlus7Pro since launch, and I still love it. That selfie camera is a 'party piece' and the battery life is still awesome, thanks to smart charging (it knows when I sleep, so it doesn't blast my battery all night with high voltage (or is it watts?) all night)). I don't play AAA mobile games on it, so the processor is great for daily driver stuff. All in all, this is the first smart phone I have owned for more than 2 years without wanting to upgrade, and I don't see the end of this ride anytime soon. I've even developed an addiction to tictok, where I'll watch hours of crap a day, and I never dip below 50%. Seems like I might have gotten the last/best OnePlus. So I guess... Later suckers!

I ditched OnePlus after they became one of the first companies to remove the microSD slot and later the headphone jack. By now this is normal, but OnePlus kind of started this unfortunate trend (in the Android world), especially shamefull since they marketed themselves as an enthusiast company.

@FalconDS92 жыл бұрын
usb-c and bluetooth made the 3.5 jack obsolete..if you still need one, just get a usb-c to headphone jack adapter. it's really that simple and really no longer needs his own hole in your phone... and who needs a microSD when the phone itself holds over 256gb of storage. you should not store years of photographing on your mobile device anyway, better use cloud storage or external drives. some stuff is really old, obsolete and can be left behind.
@howtogitgud2 жыл бұрын
@@FalconDS9 Preferences, I personally do not like keeping all files in cloud storage, and it requires the internet to access it. I rather keep it offline where I can access it anywhere and anytime without needing an Internet connection. 256GB sound big, but people who bought that definitely have a reason why they bought that big-size storage. Prolly for a heavy-duty/multitasking phone, and needed separate storage for other things like photos or videos. While it is situational, but people definitely use phone more than just taking pictures or basic daily basis like message, surfing internet, etc. To some extent it more like a work phone. While Bluetooth or Wireless earphones/headset are getting better, I rather use traditional good ol' wired earphones. Goods, reliable, and always on the go without recharging it.
@MrScorpianwarrior2 жыл бұрын
@@howtogitgud And to your point, forgot to charge your wireless headphones? Well, you're screwed because you can't use wired anymore. Yes, you can use a dongle, but that is an inelegant solution that you can't expect majority of people to have because they all have wireless ones. Want to charge while using wired headphones? You need a special dongle that can do both. I am 100% a proponent of USB-C, but everything has its place and purpose, and sometimes getting rid of things seen as "obsolete" completely alienates a (albeit small) crowd of people.
@jabuvihunen95732 жыл бұрын
I think enthusiasts are people who grow with trends. Nowadays with all the cheap or even free cloud storage and huge internal storage options, I think microSD is obsolete. Same thing with headphones. Wireless technology is so good now, that you can't even tell the difference no matter what kind of audiophile you are. Ofcourse if you use studio headphones, they are basically always wired but the reason being that they need an interface to plugin to. Ofcourse you can dongle to 3.5mm, but your phone doesn't have strong enough preamp for most good quality studio headphones anyways. So I think what it boils down to is, if you need microSD and use old wired headphone technology, are you an enthusiast? Plus, the removal of 3.5mm is mostly because of the phone being alot easier to waterproof. Even though only a few of the newer OP phones have IP rating, they are mostly very much waterproofed. I think OP didn't go for IP ratings at the start because the license is super expensive so they could keep prices lower.

I'm happy Linus covered this. I got a OnePlus 9 less than a year ago because I had remembered how Linus talked about them & it looked really good. I so BADLY wish I had done more research. Everything was fine at first, then that storage problem started happening to me. At first since it was maybe a week or so after I got it so I just reset it & I didn't really pay much attention to it till one day I noticed that like half my storage was gone again. I was so confused but yet again I just said that I'll just reset it & we'll see if it happens again. IT HAPPENED AGAIN!!! Now that's the point when I started looking into it, I found all those form posts about it & I was so upset. Worst part is I cannot afford to get a new phone & in fact I'm still paying of this one. I tried talking to OnePlus, they can't do anything because I'm still paying it off. I tried talking to my carrier who basically just told me "delete some stuff" EVEN THO I TOLD THEM IT WOULD DO NOTHING TO SOLVE MY PROBLEM! So finally I go into the actual carrier store one day & I talk to the manager about it. He was really nice & understanding & clearly had some tech knowledge. Together we finally found the other posts about how it was likely those log files. I was offered a replacement HOWEVER if I did get a new phone it would've still had to have been the same model AND it would've been a refurbished one. So really there wasn't even a guarantee it would fix my problem & I'd have no idea what condition the phone was really in. So basically I'm screwed. I can't get a new phone, I doubt a replacement would do much & there's no guarantee the condition I'd get one in anyway. And I have to have it for at least another year. Suffice to say I will NEVER be getting another OnePlus phone again.
@pedrothevenard2 жыл бұрын
i know it doesn't solve your problem, but if you are struggling with the phone you can always get on Swappa and get an LG g7 or V40 for like 80 bucks to last a year, or a g8 for like 100 bucks, i know the condition wont be amazing but they are perfectly usable phones with good cameras that can last a year easy, and when your contract ends you can sell both phones and get an iPhone or Samsung, which will most likely just work.

@@benjaminjinkins4958 That's fair & even I myself have gotten decent refurbished things in the past. There's really two problems I have with that though. The major one is that the manager I talked to told he he didn't recommend that I do it for the reasons I listed. He didn't know if I would even get my problem fixed, the condition, & once I gave them "my" phone I would never get it back. The other thing is simply that I'm paying full price for a NEW phone, which to means means I should get a new working phone. I'm just holding out right now, I'm really hoping that OnePlus fixes it but I'm getting to the point where it seems they just don't care so I might just have to give in & try a refurbished one or see if I can find a cheap temporary replacement.

I lost interest in OnePlus a few years ago when they started losing interest in the enthusiasts who built them in an effort to "go premium." The OnePlus 3 was one of the best phones money could buy when it came out. My daughter is still using my old one, although the original battery is pretty bad after almost 7 years. At one point I'd have bought another one, but the software turned bad and the value for the money vanished as they tried keeping pace with Apple pricing instead of staying true to what built them.
