@Bgkillas No it just doesn't. I have used Windows since at least version 3, I have used Linux since you had to install from a million floppies and Macs for about 10 years. Linux has many of the issues of Windows (having to be written to run on everything instead of being able to concentrate on a few devices), no self-made hardware to partner with it (like the Apple trackpad) and its lacking huge amounts of software (which Windows of course mainly wins at). The Macs have strengths that Linux simply cannot compete with.

Worked in IT for 26 years and used every single MacOS OSX version from the first release 20 years ago, till the last. So I've been using Windows and OSX extensively at work and home over those years. When it comes to OS consistency, reliability and privacy, Windows does not stand a chance at getting me back from MacOS. When I have a say in the matter, MacOS / IOS for me, Linux and the BSD's for my servers. I only use Windows when I have no choice.
@user-sk4nt5bm5r2 жыл бұрын
Same. Been in IT since 1996. I've used Windows since Windows for Workgroups/Windows 3.11. I was a NT 4 MSCE. At work I use Windows, because most of my clients do and I have no choice. I'm very much a pro user on Windows. I write code on Windows, I use Powershell. But boy do I hate the OS. First of all it looks pretty much like it did 20 years ago, but worse, the whole user experience is the same inconsistent mesh. From app to app, menu's are different, short cut keys are different. At home I have Macs and a Proxmox cluster to run my Linux servers on, I also have a bunch of Raspberries for all kinds of fun projects. We always had iPad's in the household, but I never had a use case for it myself, until I got the iPad M1 + pen and now I use that extensively for 3D drawing, Concept app for concepts, etc. So for me it is Mac and IOS for clients and Linux on the server all day. I have one Windows gaming machine from which I stream games on all our other devices.

I would even confidently argue that nothing in the industry can remotely compare; especially when you consider the rest of the things mentioned (the ecosystem, seamless and efficient design, universally user-friendly interfaces). Why does it take 5 minutes for windows to search through all my files, but Mac OS is almost instant?
@TheWtfareyoulooking4 жыл бұрын
Probably because windows has to search through more files that are hidden in a macs search box since they are part of the operating system functioning files. Hence leaving the mac only searching for useful to the user files while windows searches through the whole thing useful to the user or not making windows easier to manipulate.
@pedrovictorbritocordeiro91684 жыл бұрын

Try the software "everything"
@passcomcompass26234 жыл бұрын
From what I know, its because Mac has a designated index database for all your stuff, and its in sync with your daily activity, and shares the same index with your icloud, I caught it working in the backgroud a couple times, maybe 10-15s in session that the you can monitor the process if you pay attention, so when you search stuff, its searching through a tree structured database with weights and models considered to rank relevance, whereas windows literally put all your file names in list and go through it one by one, and spotlight is not only faster, while buildiing the index system it also goes through the contents in your file, so if you have a set of keywords in a pdf file, searching for the keyword would still return the correct file, although its not the name and only appeared once in the file, try it yourself. the thing about mac apps is they are so complete, they're complete packages with designers thinking of every possibility and needs the user might need at some point. And exclusive hardware support makes it possible for them to fine tune it and be sure everything works butter smooth.

Programs are "apps" now, settings is veeery basic, and the entire mixture of things that came over from Win7 and all these newer features of Win10 make it very confusing to use. It just feels cluttered. Even the start menu is a mess. I actually switched to Mac - and so far I‘m really enjoying it.
@brunolpsousa5 жыл бұрын
@@LEDmatrix Agreed. Windows 10 was a huge improvement in terms of performance and stability (if you have a good hardware and SSD), but settings is just confusing and lack a lot of options. Also you got a lot of bloatware after install and we'll never know what data Microsoft collect from us. Even though I said it's more stable, this is true as long as you don't upgrade to a newer version, cause you could end up with your files deleted or your system full of bugs, lagging and misconfigured. I always find it refreshing to see videos like this that focus more on positive aspects of competing products. I understand apple has its faults...quite a few, but I really like seeing stuff like this because it really keeps the purchaser more informed. Everyone always talks about how blind the "Apple fan boy/girl" is, but fail to recognize that in a lot of cases the "Anit-Apple" person can be just as blind to these positive aspects that would compel a person to buy an apple product. Looking forward to the inevitable Windows version of this video and I would also like to see a Linux version if you guys have time. What ever you think the most popular distro is would be fine. Thanks for all the great videos and setting personal preference aside to deliver all around good information on every topic! As a person who has owned andriod, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux machines I can say they all have their place and they are all great machines. It really comes down to the individual being confident in what they want out of a product.

I've had to add Rectangle to park my windows, but Mission Control already negates the need for keeping lots of windows on a single screen. I have not been able to network the Mac to my Windows system despite watching a ton of videos, so I might have to get a man in to do that.

I never had a hassle connect my wireless headphones to my laptop 4. You can send files to your other devices via Bluetooth or other brand-specific ways like LinkShare and Nearby Share. And you can just connect with USB and SD cards (which Apple can't) The rest were legitimately good features, but the beginning of this list was confusingly not exclusive to Apple

I alway bought AppleCare for my Mac laptops and it saved me thousands of dollars in repairs. When Apple declares your covered Mac unrepairable they replace it with a current equivalent computer. My PowerBook G4 17" was declared unrepairable and it was replaced for free with its current replacement the first Gen MacBook Pro 17". The remaining AppleCare was transferred over. When that laptop was declared unrepairable they replaced it with a current MacBook Pro. Apple was really cool about giving me free adapters for the ports they kept removing on the newer Macs. With my sister's 17 MacBook Pro needed a new logic board, Apple called me to tell me that it might take a few weeks for them to get the part and they offered me for the same repair cost a current get MacBook Pro 15" as they discontinued the 17" versions. Since it used Apple SSD PCI-E flash, I gave them grief about not being able to upgrade it to the 1TB capacity the 17" had and they upgraded the SSD from 500GB to 1TB for free. Another time the power button my my sister iPod touch got a slight dent in the case which jammed the button and Apple initially refused to replace it until I blew a gasket in the Apple Store and they reconsidered (Not condoning that behavior but it worked). Another time I got my MacBook Pro back from repair and it had several dead pixels and after giving them some grief they sent it back for repair but when I got it back they put the wrong LCD in it as I had paid extra for the full HD screen. The manager was super nice and let me pick out any item in the store up to $100 for free for the mixup as the repair bill had the right part id.

I’m glad you mentioned the trackpad but I don’t think you did it justice. It’s arguably the primary human interface device making it THE most important feature. Think about it, how often do you use it? I find the trackpad is extremely precise, acceleration is natural and predictable as is scrolling with its inertia, it’s just a joy to use and I way prefer it to a mouse now. Just look at anyone using a windows or Linux machine, they all use mice because the trackpad is basically unusable. That’s one less thing to carry with you... me and my Mac, nothing else... because there’s a monitor with a USB-C cable waiting for me at work. Oh, and using the Mac on my lap, say on a sofa, like a “laptop”, I just use the same trackpad and don’t have to compromise. Microsoft, when you sort out the trackpad I might, just might, start to consider Windows.
@iamvishar5 жыл бұрын
The problem is, Microsoft doesn't make any of those trackpads. Apple does everything itself and makes hardware and software both in the same company which makes it super awesome as it can be adapted to each other's needs. Thus no BSDs. Windows is a piece of software that has more financial flexibility and it's kinda a does it all thing as you can game on it, work on it, edit, music and wide variety of software and hardware compatibility. The one major thing about apple is, having an apple product might seem just a bit expensive in many countries but countries like India, still people use PCs and laptops cheaper than any mac. In fact, this comment is being typed on a laptop which is only half the price of a MacBook air but it fulfills the requirements just fine. Though I am willing to get a MacBook as well, it is freaking unaffordable.

I don't use Macs so I don't really know exactly hos these applications you mentioned work but if you're interested in potential alternatives on Windows then I have some suggestions. Alternative to Time Machine: Macrium Reflect - It does cost money which is a negative, but in my opinion worth it. Basically I have it set up to take incremental snapshots of my system drive each day. It does technically support per-file recovery but I'm guessing it's not as seamless as Time Machine. From what I can see Time Machine is much better integrated with the operating system than Macrium Reflect is, it's more of its own standalone thing in a way. I wish Windows had an alternative to NTFS closer to something like BTRFS. Alternative to Keychain: KeePass - Open source password manager that works very nicely, not sure what else to say on it... It's offline so you need to manage your database yourself and upload it to a cloud etc if that's something you want.
@SanyaIVLitvyak5 жыл бұрын
@Pagani Zonda I suggested them because they are what I use and they are also tried and tested. You're welcome to explain why they are shit if you so feel like it but I'm not going to force you into having a constructive discussion. You're also welcome to explain why the software you recommend is better, in what way? Looking up Duplicati it seems focused on online backups, something I'm personally not interested, but it seems to also support offline backups or at least I assume it does. It looks interesting though, I can't find much comparisons to Macrium Reflect though on points such as resource usage, backup times, restore times and resulting backup size. Ponder your system drive completely crashes, how does the restore procedure look like for Duplicati? (With Reflect you switch the drive, boot usb and just restore) I disagree that KeePass would in any way be hard to use, I don't understand how it has that reputation. What is actually hard with it? I don't really see a need for KeeWeb or BitWarden when KeePass does a just fine job already, again you're welcome to explain why they are better if you want.
@SanyaIVLitvyak5 жыл бұрын
@Tftw They have both free and paid versions. For the functionality that would be most equivalent to Time Machine you'd probably have to pay for it. Then again I haven't checked the free version in some years.

Great vid, definitely make some good points. Now I'd be curious for a similar video for Linux. I even have a few suggestions, some of which are repeats from this video: 1.) Linux is Free (as in Speech, and normally as in Beer too) 2.) Linux is customizable, don't like the way your desktop works... change it, don't like your network manager, change it, nothing is really "Just part of the OS that you can't change" 3.) Linux is fast -- I mean REALLY fast, dual boot Windows and even a Linux with a "Heavy" desktop installed and Linux will blow Windows out of the water in terms of snappiness 4.) Linux is secure - sure it's less of a target, but also just better defaults, I mean when you first set up Windows you're first account is an ADMINISTRATOR -- over 90% of malware would have been unsuccesful if the user you used on a daily basis was a standard user instead 5.) Linux is stable, I'm personally running Arch, which some call a more "Unstable" distribution because it keeps pretty close to the bleeding edge of software, new updates are pushed almost instantly, and I've never had it crash on me yet, and I'm even running a really weird setup where all 3 of the major Graphics drivers are installed at all times, Intel, AMD, and Nvidia (would love to go into more detail on my personal set up so if your curious please ask in a reply to this) 6.) Linux is opensource, meaning you don't have to trust the handful of Apple and Microsoft engineers when they say the code is safe and contains no backdoors, you can verify that for your self if you wanted to 7.) most things in Linux (unless your doing some weird stuff) just work. Want to use a PS3 Controller? just plug it in, want to use it wirelessly... if you have Bluetooth in your pc and run a beginner friendly distro like manjaro or Ubutnu after you plugged it in once it will automatically work wirelessly! want to run all 3 major vendors of graphics cards? just install the 3 mods for them (kinda like drivers) and they just work 8.) Linux gives you choice, kinda ties into customizable, but a bit more exact, don't like the way your distro dev does business, switch distros. 9.) Linux respects your privacy by default. Depending on what distro you have you won't need to go into any settings and turn off telementary... it just won't be on by default. It'll wait until sending telementary back would help the devs, then tell you what it wants to sends, and you choose on a case by case basis if you want to send it or not. 10.) Linux doesn't force updates on you. Even if you have auto updates turned on in Ubuntu it'll update in the background, and won't force you to close anything, it'll just wait for you to close that program so that the next time it launches it will be with the new version. So again great video, thanks for the top tier content I've come to expect from LTT, and I hope you read this and it sparks an idea.

@@danielhu6485 It's not just the Apple Tax for me, but the actual quality of hardware that Apple offers, as well as their habit of dropping support for older models within a few short years. I would be using Mac today, I think, if the hardware were still up to par, open and expandable like the Mac Pro, and priced competitively with comparable PC hardware, because the software experience is pretty nice on the whole. Linux became my alternative to Apple's growing insanity with the Mac, and it serves me quite well today. It runs on whatever system I care to run it on, and I can coax it to run MS Office, albeit at an older version, for work. That and its great gaming capabilities today, plus all of the advantages gone over by others in these posts, make it a no-brainer for me. It wouldn't be much of an option if I weren't as technically oriented as I am, and that is unfortunate for Linux in general. I wish everyone could run it and not have to think about it any more than they generally do about Mac OS or Windows.

1. Its funny how in the windows video linus included third party app for extended functionality but in the mac one he didn't. Third party apps are actually a big part of customization and enhancement of macOS (alfred, bettertouchtool, hammerspoon, keymaestro, karabiner, hazel etc.) 2. it's oblivious to leave out automator, a first party automation and system level customization tool that boosts the efficiency of macOS so much, as well as the easy to use high level scripting language applescript to write simple automation scripts. 3. Also you can assign shortcut to basically all the actions in the tool bar for every single app just in the system settings, including the ones you create with automator yourself. 4. All in all, while trying to be objective and reasonable, the video stays on the surface and goes on about how "it just works" without talking about what the OS actually provides for power users.
