I just replaced with with a 3080ti this week, but will be re purposing this bad boy into a pc for my sons. I do, because i play old games as well, from a disc. (I've actually contemplated getting a floppy drive as well) But as for practicality? Not really, if you want, you can play older games without a disc, I'm just really attached to physical media.

Arvind Prakash no not all are overclocled, this one is advertised as overclocked out of the box but that’s not true. There is a specific mode that is disabled out of the box called the OC mode, and you need the Gpu Tweak 2 software to enable it, you can’t over lock it manually anymore than the software can

Just bought 2x 1070 Strix $220 and 2x 1080 Strix $220 and 1080 G1 for $120. Finally able to get bang for the buck. All my slower 1050ti,970,1060,1660 getting sold off. Hoping to be about $60-80 out of pocket for the upgrades after selling of my cards. Far more GPU performance for my family and 2 different Media PC's. It's nice being able to run Ultra everything on a MediaPC with a old LG 3D HDTV 1080p/60hz. Basically just a faster PS4 Pro. Or the 1070 that is now used on a 4k 60hz TV. Old games all run 4k no problem now vs the 1050ti that was in there. I run a 6700xt in my main rig but now I was able to get the family bumped up on the cheap.

Coming back in 2022 and most of the video is a little funny to watch now because the performance of the 1080 is kind of just ok 6 years later but one thing that is still applicable is the discussion about how good it is for companies to push their chips to the limit out of the box. Frankly, I don't have a problem with it. I really like tinkering and figuring out the best i can do but that just means i either buy something that isn't already at its limits or i undervolt it to see how much power i can save with no noticable performance hit.

I use the driver disk for software. I didn't know that wasn't recommended. I understand the drivers portion, but the install disks that come with new hardware are useful. They include more than just the drivers. Instead, what I would like to see more of is manufactures include a 1gb usb flash drive with their software's/drivers/etc. since more and more people are opting for builds without optical drives.

I still use the driver discs too, mainly because every time I wanted to just download them, I never have any luck with downloaded drivers. I resently had to reinstall Windows because of a pretty nasty crash. My PC has a PCIe network card, and it came with software drivers on disc. So really, I can't "just go download it off the web" because the network adapter isn't automatically installed by Windows, so I need the CD. And when it came to GPU drivers, I didn't have any luck with straight driver DL's. Even when selecting clean install during installation, I couldn't get it to install properly. Maybe I've been doing something wrong, oh well. Either way, I do know that the CD that comes with new graphics cards has DirectX on disc for you to install. In the instruction manual, they recommend you install DX. Unless I am somehow misinformed, a driver update from Nvidia/AMD doesn't come with DX every time, right? Maybe that's why I couldn't get the driver to install since it didn't have DirectX.

Bought a 1070 Strix 1,5 years ago. Today i got hold of a 1080 Strix, will give the 1070 to my son. The 1070 works really well in 1440p with mid/high settings, all I need really. However, the slight upgrade will be nice. Won't even look at RTX cards until (used) prices come down by at least a third.

It will last a good few years, my rig is completely up to all the latest stuff so good news is my whole rig won't need upgrading for a few years now. Perhaps siliconlottery, just ran a Heaven Benchmark on Ultra settings 1440p with gsync enabled, maxed out at 68C with fans on auto and yet only got to 50% speed. The settings I use in GPUTweak are +192 core, max voltage, +490 on memory (didn't feel like stressing it) and powertarget of 109% which should theoretically max out at 87C but doesn't no matter what game I run. While gaming I rarely hit over 64C and fans have never to my knowledge ever gone past 50% threshold. The only gripe I have is that in GPUTweak it shows that boostclock should be at 1925 but it doesn't, it goes to 2101 ingame and in benchmarks.

Man, the 1080 (and 1080ti) really were the best GPUs (compared to their previous and next generation) ever, the difference between the 900series was huge, with only a minor difference in price, and then the 2000 seires offered pretty much nothing other than Ray Tracing support, and very slight performance increase, for quite a substantial price increase. What other generation can at the very least remain relevant 2 generations later? The 1080 ti can still kick ass in 1440p, and even run 4k 60fps with very near max settings on 2020 games (that last part is probably not gonna last too much longer, though, with newer games optimized for RTX 3000 series cards). Still, I bet you could still easily push a generation or two more for 1440p gaming 60fps max settings. BEST. PURCHASE. EVER!!

I hate when LTT's videos now are 80% content + 20% ads/sponsor. There so many more things you can cover about this card, like RGB lightning, come on, at least show us how it look it the chassis. The so called "cinematic product video shoot with awesome keylight - rim light - bokeh" is cool for sure, but at least show how the card actually looks inside a case. I love the handheld-shaky review videos back in the days, with no special effects at all. That's when I felt in love with this channel.

I depends. I recently bought 1080 for my 7yo system with i7 860 @ 3,8 GHz. My Corsair 550W PSU wasn't enough for the load. The system was shutting down at high load. I have a Watt meter that was showing 600W load for a second when starting up demanding titles. So even if the system will run on 400W load, it needs 200+W from the PSU for a split of a second from time to time and not many people account for that.

This is by far the most appealing 1080 I've seen. I hate having 3 DP and only 1 HDMI. DP monitors are stupidly expensive in Britain, to be fair everything tech related is, that's why I only know 5 people with gaming PCs out of everyone I know, but they're expensive and I want a VIVE at some point so this is great. Also not having to overclock it myself and risk bricking it or something else in my system in the process is an amazing relief. *Good guy Asus at it again.*

every gtx 1080 hits 2ghz. AiB and nvidia just dont guarantee clocks that some cards may not reach due to the silicon lottery. A 1080 advertised at 1700mhz will hit 2000mhz aswell.

ProjektPlay They hit 2ghz. They just dont keep it up consistantly. The 1080 FE GPU Boost 3.0 goes below 2000mhz after a while aswell and settles at about 1950mhz.

My Card is a total beast. Once I turned up the fan speed and kept it a bit cooler fps was not a concern in the least. It runs ark survival evolved on epip settings with no problems and BO3 on max settings averaging 170+ fps. It is a little loud but with headphones on it playing a video game you can even here it. I found the software pretty easily mainly because i struggled to find it for my asus motherboard so I knew how to find it for this one. Overall total beast of a card. Did not disappoint

I use the drivers cds that come with my motherboard on all my builds... I didn't realize no one else did that. I mean I install updates too, but the motherboard cd usually has a network manager that you need to even connect via ethernet cable.. So I've had to use it both times I built complete builds, and then once I install that I can access the internet to download drivers via Windows update or Nvidia Geforce Experience or whatever it's called. I have a 970 oc edition. It runs everything I throw at it at least at 50 fps including Ashes of the Singularity which actually has a 970 as recommended hardware. I love LinusTechTips because I'm learning a lot about building overall. Thanks for what you guys do..

Strix GPU Tweak 2: Go to Professional mode -> then mode the following sliders GPU Boost Clock to 1875, GPU Voltage: 85, Memory Clock: 10722 If it's not stable (which it should be), just up the voltage a little to maybe 90 This is s fairly huge OC, and has been tried on 3 other cards successfully.

I love this card and the software is easy to find. Was easily able to overclock it to 2000mhz and 10090 memory clock. Plays 99% of games at 4K 60FPS HDR on High settings.

Ordered my strix 1080 card on the 28th from newegg when most of the 1080s became in stock (then promptly sold back out). Received the card 2 days ago and has some of the most excessive coil whine ive heard even under normal gaming load at 60-80fps, nothing crazy like coil whine at 300+ fps which is to be expected. Old gtx 780 from asus never had this issue in the entire 3 years of using it. RMA approved but doubt itll be in stock so will end up getting money back instead of a product along with the slow way of handling returns newegg is infamous for
