The NVIDIA open sourcing of the kernel modules of their drivers is an unequivocally good thing - there's no downside there at all. But it's just a first step. An important first step - but it has to be followed through. In order to actually become this big win for usability (and that would actually be really huge) - this kernel module has to get upstreamed (i.e. get merged back into the official kernel repository) - and NVIDIA themselves admitted that it's not quite upstreamable yet, as long as it's only useful in combination with that closed-source userspace part of the drivers. But if they were to open-source that userspace part as well... then this kernel module could be upstreamed, and that would be huge. A major step forward for gaming on Linux.

I'd love to see a video where graphics power is investigated over years past to now...but based on power use. How much have scores grown because they have just added power, rather than just advances in scaling. What are the fps against power limits (you could even do a Nvidia/Ati/AMD 'efficiency' statements to where we should be if true against where we actually are....ATi said 20% for 3yrs but scores were only 20% after the 3yrs but power grew 20%....suspicious for example) over the decades? EVERY video I've seen just points to FPS scores of older cards/modern cards but not a 'yes, it got this score and won the race by 3% but at X2 the power' would be helpful.
@GeekProdigyGuy2 жыл бұрын
efficiency is certainly relevant but generally only compared within a single gen or b/w 2 consecutive gens of hardware... there are big challenges around power delivery and cooling that do constrain "just" adding more power. otherwise we'd already have 1kW cards and PCs would literally max out a standard US outlet during spikes.
@grantpaterson10162 жыл бұрын
@@GeekProdigyGuy Good points.... I was thinking more along the lines of 'advertising v reality' with a big emphasis on numbers too. i.e. If any graphics company says they have increased FPS by 20% then add 20% more power, is there any actual generational increase based on that? Has there really been such large increases due to technology in the cards or has it been a sustained FPS/Watt increase, has the reduction in die size been the real factor and the rest of the tech has added, features most definately, the 'technological leaps' they advertise. I'm just a curious boy hahahaha

The biggest thing about the NVIDIA open drivers is that they basically cheated by moving a bunch of stuff from the kernel module (that runs on the host system) to the signed firmware blob that runs on the card itself (the one that's still closed source and highly proprietary). Its likely all the juicy stuff (such as anything that NVIDIA will only allow on the far-more-expensive workstation cards and not on the consumer GPUs or anything to do with mining limiters) is now in that signed blob (where it can't be messed with).

I think a brick wall for power usage limits for desktop PCs is going to be the limits of US 15amp circuits. 1500w is about the limit, which is why space heaters top out there. Beyond that, you'd need to start splitting up the power from multiple circuits. Even at 1500w, that wouldn't include your monitor and any other peripherals. And to be clear, that doesn't just mean using a second outlet, unless that outlet is served by a different circuit/breaker.

The backlash against social network verification in the past was specifically real-name verification. Two examples I remember: - Vulnerable people who would be put in danger if forced to use their real name - Trans people who had not yet been able to legally change their name, and would have to suffer seeing a name which does not represent them attached to their profile. If Twitter attempts real-name verification then I suspect it will get the exact same backlash no matter who owns it at the time. However, if all they do is human verification (I am not a robot) then I suspect they will get support.

Don't hate on HDD mp3 players. Check the Archos range of players back in the day. Custom firmware, user serviceable parts and batteries. It's all about the flash memory for buffering. It was amazing with a 20gb drive, destroyed all ipods in 2003. Except it was 3 times as big 😂

1:54 Loved that Linus seemed to make an effort not to call people stupid. XD You can say "misguided" if you are looking for a word next time. You can do it with a smile so we know what you actually feel. That would even be pretty funny while still not insulting people. :)

Linus's Lyra would have been 64 MB not GB. I had the 128 and even that only held about an hour's worth of mp3s at decent quality. It also sometimes made a painfully loud pop at the beginning of a song.

The RTX A6000 actually uses the same die as the RTX 3080, but in 3090TI spec. The card that really does cost significantly more is tha A100, which is on TSMC 7nm, instead of Samsung 8nm, and is almost 2x the transistor count, that card can cost upwards of $12k USD

Gotta agree with Yvonne. The Star Wars prequels were better in most ways. But they were let down by often atrocious scripts and bad direction. Being able to make the likes of Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Liam Neeson look like bad actors takes a special lack of talent.

I believe the limit of resolution is real. 1440p is the sweet spot but I truly would be surprised if when 4k becomes the native that's where resolution mostly stays.I believe then we will be in a very weird time for gaming of performance out growing appetite. There will always be people who want more and more. But on pc 1080p is still the king and it shows that we are already at a growing change. I wont change from my 1440p ultra wide probably for like 6 more years at least and my 3080 already is a monster at this setup.

My family had iPods since I was born, the first being a Mini from way back in 2004 (my birth year!). Its hard drive stopped working, we got a Nano 3rd gen, then a Touch 2, and many iPod purchases of my own later, I got my newest, the Touch 6. Great memories with that thing, even if the battery was downright disgraceful. It was an amazing iOS 10 reprieve from the crap I had to put up with on my Galaxy S5 in the mid-2010s. Anyway, I'll miss the iPod.

My crypto portfolio is sad, but I told myself when I started I had to be willing to lose everything I put into it and I was in it for the long haul, so no day trading or anything like that. Hardly used it for purchases, but I did use it because I wanted to contribute to the currency’s velocity. Time to wait out the crash.

The difference between company stock and commodities, which is what crypto is used as despite the intention of being a currency, is that companies generate earnings. So long as they’re profitable, they HAVE to be worth more in the future. Commodities don’t generate earnings. They will only ever be worth what someone will pay for them. I’m not telling you what to do, but I’m only ever investing in companies. Tech stocks are cheap right now, as everyone should know by now. That’s what I’m sticking with.
@particle_wave76142 жыл бұрын
@The Rotten💯 It can come back 1,000 times, but it only takes one time of not doing that to wipe you out. It isn’t a profit-generating company. It doesn’t HAVE to go back up over time. It probably will. But it doesn’t mathematically have to.

The iPod was the one piece of Apple technology that I happily owned. I was in high school 2004 through 2008, and I had a group of friends that ranged wildly across the income spectrum, so while quite a few people didn't have phones, iPods were still super popular. I bought the mini off of one such friend when he upgraded. I also purchased the nano 2 and I believe nano 4, along with 2 others as gifts. before smartphones were really solidifying music use, the iPod was awesome in that era

Oh my beloved MP3 players. I had a an early Zen Stone, that one was so small, light and tough when in a silicone protector it could jist dangle off the headset cable and you barely noticed it. At work I made a 10cm cable and just stuffed it inside the hearing protection (w/3.5mm jack input). Later I upgraded to a Sandisk Sansa Clip+, the 4GB version w/ a 16GB microSD expansion card in it. These were really affordable bit had very good sound, they could easily drive a fairly meaty headset, and still battery life was *really* good. Like dark magic good, these things were like slightly smaller than an apple watch (the main body), had an oled screen, decent size buttons, built in radio and recorder, and a microsd card slot - but it performed as if the battery filled the whole unit and then some. It was tiny but too thick to go inside the hearing protection, so it just clipped onto the headband. m I was so sad when I broke the volume rocker and they had stopped selling them, but after a lot of digging I found I could flash it with custom RockBox firmware which had an option to control volume another way.
