Thanks. Great comparison. I'm surprised at the increased RAM usage at rest for MATE amd xfce. With version 21 I'm sure I've had around 370 MB for both. Also, (and I know others have found this, MATE can be lower RAM useage than xfce at rest, though this was the case here woth opened tabs).

Xfce is the easiest for beginners coming from windows. Everyone I installed it for on their desktop or laptop loved it said it was easy to use and customize!!

While RAM consumption is pretty similar, Xfce4 still feels quite a bit snappier on older hardware. E. g. Thunar opens faster than Nemo or Caja. However, if you need fractional scaling and/or like some subtle animations, Cinnamon is the way to go. You might also find its spices useful and appreciate its overall polish. Xfce4 is very customizable as well, and it's really stable and mature. Mate sits somewhere in an awkward position between the two and will probably mostly appeal to GNOME 2 fans.

Is the difference only about RAM, or does the CPU have more workload with one of them? I have an old Celeron CPU but a lot of RAM to spare

While your vid does cover the basics in the comparison-go-round, it is too fast and too small to be of much good, I'm not the downloading kinda user so I won't go that route. IF you really wanna be useful, try slowing things down and make them larger and visible for more than mmilli seconds.

While I appreciate the effort, this doesn't say very much at all. I've been trying Xfce somewhat extensively. It's pretty good and seems solid. It actually DOES have the "Compiz" effects, which I had hoped it would NOT. Compiz is cool, but can cause problems, particularly with gaming. Somehow the extra "load" I guess affects graphics mostly, is what I've read. I turned off all that I can with it. But, I've read you should never try to remove it completely, because it breaks all kinds of stuff, apparently. I HAVE noticed some degradation in games too. But, strangely, the sound is what was affected most. But, perhaps that is just Linux vs. Windows. Anyway, I've looked a lot more lately on Cinnamon. I think Cinnamon might be the best looking and most configurable of these. ... One thing I don't know if can be changed in Xfce is the edge size of windows. In Xfce, it's like 2 pixels thin. It's SO hard to grab an edge it's ridiculous. I've scoured all the settings I can find. Nothing to change just that, as far as I can tell. This alone is making me change to Cinnamon. I resize windows ALL the TIME.

There was a time when XFCE and LXDE was very light GUI. I mean it work perfect on notebooks like Asus eee PC with intel Atom and 2-4 GB of RAM - Cinnamon or Unity/Gnome 3 wasn't that perfect on that. Today every coputer have CPU, GPU and RAM enough to handle every GUI.
