XFCE rules. Lightweight and more configurable. I previously used MATE because it looked better than XFCE, but the more recent versions that have shipped with MINT 18.0+ have been fine to look at. But my setup with Mint 21.3 with XFCE is the best Linux setup I've done; and although I'm just a distro hopper with no real expertise, I'm really pleased with how that install and setup went. :)

I have no sound on my Zenbook UX430UQ on 21.3 Mint Cinnamon, Alsamixer says I have a Realtek ALC295 sound card. I went on the Asus Website and it says I installed the latest BIOS, tried to enter a few lines suggested by forums but the best I can get is a few seconds of audio then a quick drop off and back to no sound. Anyone knows what to do?

Cinnamon is awful. I think I'm switching to XFCE or going back to Windows. You can't change the Panel's application icons to stack vertically when more than one application is open, you know, like Windows XP. It took me 2 hours to find out where to turn off the Desktop Background. It's under a drop down menu called Picture Aspect Ratio (default 1.2) I can increase the Title Bar Font Size on my windows, but not resize the tiny close box X icon buttons. It's all very frustrating and it's like they did no user testing before they rolled it out.

As long time Linux Mint user and Linux user since 2010 I can tell you that MATE is the best choice. It's still super solid and mature desktop environment. The looks depend on theming, so it can look WinXP like era OS or Win11 or latest MacOS like. Most of latest themes are compatible with MATE since it's updated to use GTK3 themes. Also it will be smooth experience, because it's very lightwight with minimalistic desktop effects and efficient window manager. As a long time MATE user I just can't switch to anything else. Modern DEs are nice at first sight, then you want things to be as responsive as possible. MATE is the ultimate choice for most users.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I'm typing this right now on Mint Cinnamon on a Dell Vostra 1700 Core 2 Duo laptop circa 2009 with a very old Nvidia graphics card using the default noveau driver and only 3G of RAM. It works very well. They key is I installed an SSD (cheap these days... bought it used on Ebay) and Zram. There are tricks to make it run very smoothly. I've learned them all. It is snappier than Mate because it takes advantage of the GPU in ways Mate doesn't. However, Mate is a great choice, too. I can provide other tips if anyone is interested.

Mate is really in a weird position to be honest... Most people pick either Cinnamon or XFCE. I would love to see them replace Mate with a Gnome edition, and Gnome plays very nice with the current theming so you would get all the color combos already available. I think a lot of people who like Ubuntu but shun it because of the snaps issue would be very pleased with a Mint Gnome edition.

@@amint6403 I think that was true 10 years ago. Today, I hink more than 99% of all computers are having no performance problems with Cinnamon at all. When you are are using a real old and small PC you can install any lght weight desktop or window manager manually, anyway. I'm Linux user since 2010. Tried all sorts of distros and desktop environments. MATE outperforms GNOME 3/4 and KDE. It won't be a problem on better hardware, but it's a huge difference on low and medium-end PC. MATE is super lightweight and millions of people still use all sorts of older laptops, netbooks and nettops with integrated GPU. MATE doesn't use much of GPU acceleration so it spares a lot of resources. Also it can be themed to look as good as any modern OS/DE and it's customization options are just enough for most people. KDE is a feature bloat.
