Vary nice review! I like how lionel finally released this set in Ho scale. I agree with the general census that this set maybe low detail but they've done something that most model manufacturers haven't done in a while, I think they are actually trying to market this as more of a toy and less of a model. I will be interested to see how that works out and if any other manufacturers decide to follow in their foot steps on a path that hasn't been used in a while.

yeah and also with other manufacturers making different versions of the 2-8-4 as in pm 1225, nkp 765 and c&o 2716 it wouldn't be that hard to repaint one in the polar express livery. personally id like to see a bachmann PE 1225 with dcc sound to see what they can come up with

It's a good set for kids, its meant to be played with by kids, hence the lack of detail parts for them to break, and the set costs less than the price of some engines for this scale. I would totally get one of these, it seems much better than the last release. If only they paint the drivers black, they still look ugly, and the chuff could be better, it sounds weird. Other than that, great set.

The whistling noise it made when you powered it on was not the locomotive looking for the remote, it was looking for a Bluetooth device. All LionChief locomotives equipped with Bluetooth make that noise when they power on.

My set squeals very loudly, and I don't know why. It seems to be coming from the drive wheels. It started a week after I got it. I have lubricated the wheels with Labelle 107 oil, but that didn't help. Do you have any ideas or suggestions as to what might be causing the squealing? Well I do wish Lionel good luck on getting back into the HO market. It would be very interesting to see Lionel HO locomotives with the Legacy/TMCC 2 electronics in them. But please, my message to Lionel is that if you're going to go into the [high-end] HO market again but with Legacy/TMCC 2 locomotives, please don't have those darn program/run switches on them. In fact, companies like MTH actually use it as a true selling point for themselves that their locomotives don't have any program/run switches. I have a few O gauge locomotives with the TMCC 1 electronics in them from Lionel and K-Line and I never liked the program/run switch on them after I switched over to MTH DCS, thought it was out-of-date and not user-friendly to have them.

I have the Lionel Polar Express O Gauge and it is a fantastic train to play with it and great for the holidays, but now I have this chugging problem. i did keep the cars aligned and check any debris and still my train won't chug. I say look Inside the locomotive and check to see if a wire snapped. The way you say it it's mainly a connection issue and a wire snapped

This loco to me seems less realistic than the actual movie version. I feel like Lionel could’ve done much better, those molded on handrails just don’t do it. Also that track system seems kinda flimsy for a track/roadbed all in one system. It just didn’t seem like it lined up to well as apposition to their o and s gauge fastrack. The roadbed itself looks very nice though. The color is good and the mold has much more depth than Bachmann ez track

Totally agree with your comments, The set is good for young children. The engine and cars are toy like. The track looks nice for ballast and would be easy for young children to assemble with no joiners to line up. But i think its not going to challange AtlasTrue track or Kato track for serious adults .

I mean if you compare this to most kids toys on the market than its actually highly detailed, especially that tender. I think its important to look at the details referencing the movie rather than how many rivets it does or doesnt have. I think your comments on the track may be good food for thought though

A note for anyone who buys this model standalone as i bought one when it first come out and I am writing this for people who decide to buy the newer ones as hoping these issues i mention have been fixed yes its a great model but has it's downsides the first thing is the bell is super friagle and it will break as well as the armsthat hold the bell the replacement boiler and the bell if u have to replace it after the warranty is up is almost over $30 to replace and you have to call lionel to order the shell and over time the wheelsets with start to come out of the axle causing axle lock-ups...and some DCC layouts will kill the built-in decorder sadly...I ran mine on my clubs layout and within a week of operating it or so it no longer will operate if u plan to run it on a DCC layout it is easy to change the decorder it is very simple to do as it has the connector for it overall it is a great model

I would've added separate handrails! Even a much cheaper Bachmann 0-6-0 has separate handrails! The speaker also sounds cheaply made! But I do like that the train is designed for 18-inch radius curves!

Plenty of people make trains that still smoke. Lionel especially in O scale. They probably had problems trying to fit a smoke unit in the HO Scale Polar Express for either not enough room or economic reasons.
