Lionel Ritchie was one of the lead singers of the Commodores. He was a saxophone player and keyboards player as well. He left in 1982 to pursue a solo career. The Commodores are still a band.

@@tc5837 I’m sorry but Walter Orange might take exception to this statement because he sang just as many songs as Lionel Ritchie. Some big songs like Brick House, Nightshift, and Too Hot To Trott. I’m from Alabama home of The Commodores. I have my facts straight.

@@Foghorn908 let me rephrase. Lionel was lead singer on the majority of the top charting billboard songs while he was with them. Nightshift was after Lionel and lead for the second verse of Nightshift was sung by another person. He is/was British. His name escapes me.

Commodores were a huge Alabama Funk ("Machine Gun", "Brick House", "Slippery When Wet") act on Motown in the 1970s. Over the years, though, it was often the Country-flavored ballads ("Sail On", "Easy", "Three Times a Lady", "Just to Be Close to You") written, sung, and produced by Lionel Richie that put them on the Pop charts. After a few years, he kinda started taking over the band, and they pushed back, inspiring him to begin his successful solo career in 1982. This was right before that. They had one major non-Lionel hit in 1985 with "Nightshift" (US#3), while Lionel Richie himself became one of the biggest recording acts of 1982-86 with an impressive string of 13 consecutive USTop10 singles (five of which went to US#1). He was huge. I recommend his hits "You Are", "Stuck on You", "Running with the Night", "Penny Lover", "My Love", and "Say You, Say Me". Really, they're all solid.

You guy did "Brick House", on which he didn't sing lead. But from the 80s on, he was the lead singer on most of their hit songs. "Three Times a Lady", "Easy", "Sail On", and "Still" all featured Lionel. Their 1985 song "Nightshift", came after Lionel went solo, but it's a GREAT song, as it was a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, both of whom died in 1984.

Also, Jeff Lynne was in The Move, ELO, and The Traveling Wilburys before his first solo album was released in 1990. George Harrison was in the Beatles before going solo, and later joined the Traveling Wilburys.

I actually met Lionel Richie once. I am an actor and I was working with a murder-mystery dinner company and we were doing a show at a very classy restaurant in W. L. A.. Lionel and his family were sitting at one of the tables. My character was sitting at one of the tables with my "wife" trying to act like part of the audience. Halfway through the show my "wife" gets "killed" and the detective stands me up to ask me some questions. I speak lovingly about my "late wife" and this time I ended it by saying "She was once...twice...three times a lady". I actually sang the last part of it. Lionel started laughing and banging on the table as I sang. After the show I went up to him and asked him if I owed any payment for singing his song and he just burst out laughing again.

From here, it's on to Brickhouse, Easy, Zoom, Sweet Love, Sail On, Too Hot to Trot, Just to Be Close to You, Slippery When Wet -- so many possibilities. Their hit 'Three Times a Lady' is an all-time love & romance/wedding song. Also, this is a very early music video (1981), just as videos were gaining popularity, which is partly why it's so simple.

@@GoGorillas Yes, they've said several times that they find songs in the comment section. I add mine here, plus I send email to them. They also have Instagram and a family KZbin channel where they can be reached. Click on the heart icon under the video, on the next page click "about" and get their contact information. They probably get thousands of requests each day, so it takes time.

My mother was a big Commodores fan, and she loved Lionel Richie. I remember when I was 11 I had to borrow money from my father and got my mother Dancing on the Ceiling album for her birthday. Love the reaction to a cool song...

Three Times a Lady! Every time I hear that song I’m magically transported back to 8th Grade School Dances. I can smell the makeup that I wore and get that nervous feeling that no boy is going to ask to slow dance with me. It’s amazing how songs can bring up memories!

That takes me back to some old memories. Great music, and only one of their many hits. Lionel was with them before leaving to go solo. He hit big there too and is STILL in the public eye (American Idol judge). Have a great day!

I am 70 yrs old, and it’s still on my playlist! Along with happy by Pharrell, act like you know by fat Larry’s band, power of soul by bootsy collins, George Clinton and the p- funk all stars, and my son’s favorite song when he was young horsechips by jam band…. All feel warm and cozy but make you want to dance!

Was born the month this released in 81'! Better times! Amazing tunes! They say "Disco was dead" but it's influence was still everywhere - birthing modern R&B and hip-hop ... and giving us the disco hangovers that are just timeless!

Yes, Lionel is the lead singer. He and Thomas McClary met in the registration line for Tuskegee when they were aspiring freshmen. They decided to start a band. I grew up on this stuff. I had the honor of having Thomas play my guitar for a benefit show once when his guitar did not make the trip somehow, and he needed a loner. It was one of my most cherished moments. I asked him to sign the guitar afterwards, and he did! Nobody has touched that guitar since. It even still has the pick in it that he got out of his wallet to play with. That was about a year ago. Dude is a super cool guy.

Oh what a rabbit 🐇 hole you have discovered! Absolutely one of the greatest legendary pop, Soul, R&B and Funk bands from the early 70’s to the late 80’s, and this was all before Lionel Richie went on to have an equally legendary solo career. So much to discover here! And they had hits after Lionel Ritchie left too! Look no further than the great Commodores Anthology hits album!

I went the University of Alabama from 1977 to 1983. I had some friends from Tuskegee. We drove over to see the Commodores in '79. Paid $10 and they played from almost 4 hours. Brick House was an hour. 15 years later on Valentines Day I take my wife to see Lionel Richie in Mobile Al. Paid $75 a piece and he played for just over an hour.

The Commadores with lead singer Lionel Ritchie at the helm was an absolute hit maker. They are a part of the soundtrack of my childhood. Lionel went on to top the charts with his solo album, and the rest of the band had a hit the next year after Ritchie left. The Youth center dances where I held up the walls while everyone else danced were thumping with The Commadores, Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, and Kool and the Gang. We were so lucky. Middle schoolers living the dream...

Lionel Richie was a Commodores lead singer. Then went solo. He wrote a song called "Lady" which Kenny Rogers sang and began a hit for him. They were really close friends. You should listen to that one too.

Halfway through I'm dancing next to my desk and just SO HAPPY and your JOY and CHAIR DANCING has completely flipped my attitude. Thank you so much! As most have mentioned here, Lionel was a long time member of The Commodores before leaving the group. The groups biggest hits were "Easy", "Brick House", "Too Hot To Trot", "Three Times A Lady", "Nightshift" and this. Lionel is tied for the greatest number of hits by a solo artist in music history. He, IMO is the greatest writer of love songs in the R&R era. His biggest solo hit was "All Night Long", but his ballads, "Sail On", "Truly", "My Love", "You Are", "Hello", "Endless Love (with Diana Ross), and "Say You, Say Me" were all giant hits. However, his song "Zoom" with The Commodores remains one of my personal favorites.
