Why is watching Lionfish hunting so relaxing? Maybe I am just marveled by the shear number of lionfish and then relieved at how easily a crowd can be dispatched?

Just moved to Puerto Rico and after a year of living here our little snorkeling reef now has lionfish. After watching several removal videos, I like your setup the most. (side handle on your containment bucket! Perfect distance on the spear length) . Can you share with the class what equipment you use? A video with your gear would be greatly appreciated.

Great job...! Question: how did you made the top lid of the bucket?, how many feet where you at?, thanks, keep up the good job
@patrickm65007 жыл бұрын
the bucket is a 7 gallon food grade bucket that has a screw on lid which was too stiff so i cut out the top and replaced it with the top of a home depot bucket lid which was more flexible.

Resting your bucket and other equipment on the reef can do damage to it. Also touching the reef or leaning on it.
@jeffreybrewer86493 жыл бұрын
When the lionfish are shoved in the buckets -- I keep thinking they are poking each other with their spines. Just because they produce the venom doesn't necessarily mean they are immune to the venom.

Cool long video, only thing I wish you would have done was slow down a minute or two and pan the camera around slowly so to show the variety of other species swimming around you, it's interesting to see the different kind of fish. I'm not a diver but every once and a while I'll catch something I don't know what it is (and I've been salt water fishing my whole life, at least 50 years), for every one I catch there must be a hundred different ones I don't know about.

Great videos! Just one question; Are the fish being sold to local restaurants or something like that?
@pbfiend18 жыл бұрын
If I could sell lionfish directly to restaurants... I would, but here in FL you are prohibited from doing so. You can only sell to a distributor who then sells to the restaurants. We eat the ones over 10".
@theholytoast7 жыл бұрын
If you get a 50$ saltwater products license and bring them to his restaurant, he'll buy them straight from you. no distributor needed. www.grillsseafood.com/lionfish-invasion/

What depth are you finding these lionfish? Doesn't look to bee too deep .

That's great to remove 300 plus lionfish. But to think that one female can lay 10,000 eggs that float on the current until they settle on the reef to hatch. It's an up hill battle. But, I'm glad to see divers helping out before they destroy the reef eco. Looks like you guys had a great day and that's what counts. Friend diving and pure fun doing it. Not to say that the meal was worth the whole trip. Great job and very good video.

Cheers! But it may get more efficient if you use a spear without barbs or rubber bands and transfix them quickly in line, only descarting them off the spear after catching six or more using a long knife to get sure they are died and don't loose time in store all of it , becsuse they are trash.

People have been killing invasive species ( except for horses ) for years yet the numbers and areas you can find lion fish,snake head fish, bighead carp,silver carp,common carp,boas, wild pigs and numerous others just keeps growing. The world is changing we all see it but we seem to be having a hard time accepting it.

Oh my goodness how are you guys not afraid of getting stung by a lion fish or afraid of the sharks swimming in the area? I get nervous just watching! Lol
@metallicbladez31197 жыл бұрын
DebbieeeCo You are most likely to be born with a conjoined twin then get attacked by a shark. Sharks are just interested in what you are doing but when they see a vulnerable fish at the tip of your spear they will go for it. Lion fish just like any other fish, if they see you then they'll swim away but lion fish are more cocky due to not having any natural predators

why would you kill that pup right in front of its mother ...
@Chakeeper6 жыл бұрын
it doesn't matter what fish it is, it's wrong to shoot young offspring in front of its mother. if the juvenile is on its own, that's fair. but when its still with its mother ... that is stupid.
@deannelson95655 жыл бұрын
@@Chakeeper f****** Christ you snowflakes are stupid! Fish don't care for their young for more than a day or two then they're set off to do their own thing! It's not like mama shark goes out and gathers up food and brings it back to her babies so it makes no difference cuz that's shark is very likely not is Mother!
@bondpit87505 жыл бұрын
Chakeeper & dean Nelson, that wasn’t a shark pup. That was a Cobia, a great tasting sport fish. That fish provided a good number of meals. Cobia are sometimes mistaken for small sharks by people not familiar with the differences.

Why not just pop the little ones and leave them for the lobsters? Give the biomass back to the reef.

I was thinking the same but maybe it's because the remains might not be eaten and then algae might become an issue.
