Using pre cuts to quilt can make your project go much faster. Join me as I show you how you can take a jelly roll, charm pack and some yardage to make square in a square blocks and create a beautiful quilt. Pre Cut fabric or pre cuts of fabric reduce or eliminate cutting time and that can mean you get to quilt more and cut less. You probably have some in your stash. Even if you don't, you can apply this square in a square pattern using full yardage you have. Or you might have a charm pack with some coordinating fabric - take that and make this quilt. It could be you have jelly rolls or strip sets - make a quilt with this square in a square pattern saving some cutting time.
Use this for a quick gift or make a quilt ahead of time to be prepared for that time when you need a gift quickly.

I love watching your videos. I have learned a lot from you. I am a sewer by trade. Though I never did my sewing commercially. I am also an animal lover and I love watching your cat in the videos and getting a glimpse of your dogs. I have a Blue Nose Pit. I would love to see any quilting items you can do for dogs and cats. We also have a cat. I saw your video about you cat being in the way, I real don't think he was in the way that much. Once again I love all your videos.

Hi April, I don’t know which video you gave us your secret hack/hint, but it was the one where you suggested the use of invisible thread in the bobbin when binding a quilt. Well, I tried it even though I didn’t think it would work in my sewing machines, but alas, it worked perfectly and shows no thread on the reverse side of my quilt. I love this trick since I’ve struggled with this problem for ever. Thank you for suggesting we do this. Myrlin

Well, I just learned how to cut a jellyroll without using the lines on my mat. You always teach us something new without fanfare. I have tons of scrap blocks leftover from cutting yardage for rag quilts. I am thinking I can make bigger blocks from them and use up scraps of batting, like quag, without having the batting go to the edges. Sew them into a scrappy rag quilt. You inspire me! Happy New Year dear April!

Just found this video, timing is everything they say and I just started a "Square in a Square" quilt👍 I'm using a Charm pack and a Jelly Roll both from my stash. Just an idea that some may not have thought of... A Layer Cake can be cut into 4 sets of 5" squares. This comes in handy for those patterns that call for 4 Charm packs, one of my favorite patterns is a Lattice Quilt and it calls for 4 Charm Packs, it's usually cheaper to buy a Layer Cake unless you hit a great sale.

have you ever done this pattern out of a layer cake? twin up the 10" blocks and cut 2 1/2" off top and bottom then cut 2 1/2" off left and right or vice versa exchange the inside square and sew back together. very little waste, you will need to go back and trim the tails off two sides. Last February, I found some dogs on surfboards, cute mini license plates, and baseball/bat fabric at my Walmart. My background is in clothing and textiles, so I always wash the fabric before I cut it. I used it to make scrub caps and it was soft and the caps were very cute.

Bit of a hint with the Accuquilt strip die. There are two lines at 90 degrees to the blades, line the folded edge of the fabric to the one that is closer to the middle. This makes the selvedge edge further in so it cuts cleanly and avoids the dreaded elbow in the middle of your strip.❤

I just made this quilt. I think the pattern I followed was called square dance. I had a piece of themed fabric that I wanted to use so all of my middles are the same fabric and I used a coordinating jelly roll for the outside. I'd love to see how you decided to quilt these. I'm waiting for my backing fabric to be delivered so I'm trying to think of how to quilt it while I patiently (impatiently) wait. :)

If I'm in a hurry, I always do a loopy meander because I am most comfortable with that. If I have more time I use a shape from the fabric in a meander like a heart. I am going to get to quilting all these tops I'm making some day. And when I do I am going to video it. :-). I also like paisleys and feathers. :-). Thank you for watching. April

Love this quilt idea! Would it make any difference to sew the 5” strip to the square and cut it off the jelly roll strip and sew the second 5” strip and cut it? Instead of cutting individual 5” and 9.25” strips, sew and then cut off the jelly roll strip? Not sure if I am making sense!!! Really love the Christmas quilt-turned out so cute and festive! The dog prints are sure cute and would be fun to sew up too! Again, love your creativity and the end result. Glad you went to WDW - can’t wait to go again in a few more years! Great job, April. As always, enjoyed watching your video!

Such a simple block! I love it. Question though... If you were going to cut 2.5 inch strips from yardage, about how much fabric would you need for that (assuming it's all the same like you did on the Christmas charm pack quilt).

Hopefully my math isn't too bad, but I believe a full jelly roll is about 40 strips. So (2.5 * 40)/ 36 = 2.77 yards. Hope this helps. :-) April

Could you check - I would have thought the second two strips would be 9" (not 9 1/4"). 5" becomes 4 1/2" and 2 1/2" strips become 2 1/4" = 4 1/2" + 2 1/4" + 2 1/4" = 9"??? Love the quilt tops.

I did measure and I came up with 9 1/4", but I subscribe to fuzzy math. LOL When I redo the math it is 9 1/2", but when I measured I needed 9 1/4". It could be my 1/4" seam isn't really a 1/4" seam. I did accidentally cut 9/ 1/2" strips, but those were too long. Thank you for watching and keeping me in check. 😉 April

@@aprilscraftroom, If you already have an Accuquilt and a 2-1/2" strip die, why spend the money on the stripology ruler? They're so expensive and they can slip and it's way too easy to cut the wrong size if you're not paying very close attention. Your die can cut 24 strips (4 strips time 6 layers) that are 24" long in one pass and you never get that annoying bow if you fan folded the fabric for a continuous strip.

@@karenhawkins6311 I have the Strip Club ruler that is a triangle. I don't have the stripology ruler that has the slits in it and cuts strips. I had considered investing in one, but to your point - why? Thank you for pointing out why I don't need that. :-). And thank you for watching. April
