I settled back on my sofa for a short afternoon break. You said, "baskets are our buddies". I immediately paused the video, ran upstairs to the attic, pulled out three baskets, went straight to the master bathroom and tried them on top of a cabinet. I had toilet paper stored in with the towels but they kept falling behind the adjacent drawer space. Not only does the basket look good, but it serves a good purpose! Thanks for the idea and the quick workout!

My approach to small bathrooms is not to load the room up with lots of awkward shelving and junk and dust collecting baskets above the toilet or under the sink. Doing so just creates too much visual clutter and makes the tiny bathroom look smaller and over stuffed. I say keep it simple and declutter. If you need a million small tubes and jars find a vanity that offers you drawers - limit the amount of stuff you keep to what you actually use and organize it, add in a few extra hand towels washcloths and spare toilet paper in trays inside the drawers. Keep the visual space in the room as decluttered and open as possible so that the room looks as big as possible and you aren’t overwhelmed with how to negotiate arms elbows and knees that could be bumping into upper or lower shelves as you figure out how to negotiate doing your business in this tiny space and remember, you are going to have to clean this room and all this stuff. I also found it interesting that none of the bathroom images looked particularly tiny and that when it came to talking about lighting - every image showed high end completely decluttered bathrooms with nary a shelf or basket visible.
@scottoldham7459 Жыл бұрын
And where do you put you bath stuff? In my tiny linen closet outside the room?

Agree and they gather so much clutter and dust - more work! Why would you use wicker baskets and store piles of towels openly in the bathroom? Steam, dampness = smelly, mouldy baskets and towels. Not everyone has a good extractor system.

You don't have to store _everything_ in your bathroom. If your bathroom is tiny it is enough to have one spare toilet paper roll in your bathroom, for example and the other ones are stored somewhere else.

Hers are as noisy as mine so we know each others 🚽 schedules whether we want to or not. I am still pushing for an outward swinging door. Heck, I’ll put a warning bell on it like a truck in reverse, would still be less noisy. The door is not flush, so let’s just say, nothing is private. That’s only ok for a hermit (thankfully I’m close) but it’s ridiculous. Glad you’re situation worked better. Wish me luck 🚪

Some of the “tiny” bathrooms in your photos are gigantic compared to my truly tiny bathroom. My entire master bathroom measures 5’ x 6’. My sink vanity is only 24” wide. I hate doing my hair and makeup in such a small space. I placed a cabinet above the toilet for extra storage space and several years ago a carpenter installed a several shelves within the wall with a door to keep it hidden. I also purchased a small shelf from IKEA that I placed on the wall for a little extra storage, but it’s still so small and cramped in there.

I now do my makeup in my bedroom too. I have put my old white study desk under the bedroom window (where most people would put a lowboy) with a standing magnifying mirror on it, to be my vanity. close by is a floor reading lamp with an adjustable neck, for getting the right angle of light on my face. My core makeup is in a basket nearby. I actually sit down at my vanity to do my makeup; it makes me feel a bit like a hollywood actress of old (well sort of). it's quite nice actually, after decades of doing my makeup standing up in a bathroom. I still do my hair in the bathroom, but only because it stops hair ending up all over the bedroom floor.

I think some of these bathrooms showcased in the video are considered Wet Rooms. I have never seen this in the U.S. The idea is that the shower is not enclosed. I inherited my family home complete with a tiny second bathroom tiled with Mamie Eisenhower pink tiles bordered in black. I was going to remodel but actually I fell in love with it. The wall above the chin high tile I wallpapered with Martinique style paper with a white background. The toilet and sink are white. I absolutely love it. It's unique and beautiful. It makes me smile when I walk In. There is a window at head height on the side wall so I get natural light by which I put my makeup on with no problem. Small pink bathrooms are a treasure. The main bathroom is neutral. I rarely use it as it is boring by comparison.

Curtain has an image of black rocks that have drops of water on them and a bamboo that’s green. The art work is much the same with a green plant 🌱 thrown in it. I also have a shelving unit above the toilet that has succulents, in cute cement planters. I wanted totally what I thought would be opposite of the bathrooms I saw as a child, the ones with a beach vibe, or a person is living under the sea with the plastic or plaster seahorses. No shells, no blue, no wallpaper clouds. It is small, it’s a rental, it’s functional. But I don’t feel cramped. Thank you for all your video content. It’s the best. 🥰

I am watching this for a second time. I plan to turn an unused back hallway into a walk-by closet and the Ikea planner says it's even more hanging space than our current walk in closet. I don't like our current walk-in closet at all. It's adjacent to our too-small master bathroom and gets steamy, not good for clothes. I am currently drawing plans to clear the current walk-in closet contents to the unused back hallway and combine the current walk-in closet with the current bathroom while upgrading and adding plumbing. To the toilet and shower current line-up, I want to add a French door to a new enclosed deck with cooling tub outside while inside a bidet/shower combo and dressing table/sink combo. I'm very excited, in case you were wondering why I comment so much! So far I am working on drawings, have picked all the materials and am very close to creating a budget!

Very timely!! Our main bathroom is soooo small and I am starting to renovate it. If we were going to stay here I would consider expanding it, borrowing some space from our overly large bonus room next to it. So these tips are FABULOUS. One thing you did not mention was ceilings. The builder that built this house put - brace yourself - popcorn texture on the ceilings even over the bath/shower combo. (Insert Scream). It has GOT to go. Once that is done and the ceilings are flat and smooth, the ceiling will be painted the same very light colour as the walls to be making it an envelope. Sorry, my walls will NOT be white. I spent far too many years in white apartments that just ended up looking dingy, dirty, and utterly boring and just NO THANK YOU to any more white walls. But it will be a light neutral colour of some sort that makes me feel happy! (As I did in my last house.) My shower curtain will also be hung ceiling height and that is where my colour will come from along with my towels. Totally going to steel the idea of recessing a cabinet with doors over the toilet. Genius!! Another thing I am going to do that many designers today have nightmares about... my countertop is going to extend over the toilet - a banjo I think they call it. I don't care!!! I like to have easy access to kleenex that doesn't get splashed by water and my husband likes his battery operated radio handy. The banjo potion over the toilet is where the kleenex and radio hang out. Sad but true! LOL (Other than liquid soap, nothing else is on my countertop. ( I hate clutter and open shelves require clutter.) Bonus points will be the banjo will provide space to place items taken out of the genius recessed cabinet over the toilet!!

Some great storage ideas here Lisa, thanks. I so agree about not using strong colours. When I first moved into my tiny flat I painted the wall where the basin hung in coral. Fabulous colour. Trouble is I looked like an umpalumpa when I looked in the mirror! It was repainted white within a week. Years later bathroom has been totally remodeled in palest of grey with white suite and (very) small touches of colour. So much better.

I have a white master bath (with great lighting of course) and have added shades of green in the rugs, towels and green-ish botanical prints on the walls. I recently moved into a Scandi-modern townhouse, and my natural style is Scandi-folklore-boho. The bathroom is all neutral-modern ice white in utilities and tiles. And no window. Been totally stumped until I realised I have this huge Indian teak boho-style cupboard - it’ll swallow towels, baskets, general storage, and the rest of the bathroom can be a quietly complimentary-neutral style from there - creamy-sandy naturals, sage green, baskets and so on This is extra perfect bc that gorgeous cupboard needs moving from where it’s currently at: too big, too dark, too boho

If you go vertical… where do you keep the step ladder? I’m 5’ tall and keep a step stool in EVERY room.
@pakonaranjo40913 жыл бұрын
If you have a wood cabinet in the sink you can put a rack or something to hang the ladder so u don't see it. Maybe you can also use the ladder as a decoration, so maybe paint the ladder to a color that matches your bathroom or get one made with materials that match your bathroom and you can leave it open and use it to put plants above when you are not using it, and just take the plants when you need to use it? 🤔

Lisa - I’m renovating a small house for a friend. The master shower needs to be re-done, from shower basin up. I chose a large rectangular tile (white). The tile guy suggested that I run the tile INSIDE the shower vertically to give the illusion of height … and if placed horizontally, the illusion of greater width. Opinion please …

Thank you. I am so glad you said go wild (not your exact words) on powder rooms because I recently painted mine in lime green with lilac accent wall on the sink side. I do plan to apply my make-up in this room. I can sense you cringing from where I am here in Ontario! 🤪 Well I have great ideas in my mind's eye but it never turns out how I thought it would. Thankfully the powder room is only a temporary one for a few years while we decide how to renovate the extension it is housed in. We tore out the very old avocado bathroom set and built in cupboards, floor, walls and ceiling and replaced everything to make it a sanitary space. It had been neglected for decades by previous owners. At least it's clean and fresh now and people say it's cheerful and pretty. Now on to the main bathroom that has a floor space of only 59inchesx65inches'. My plan was to paint (yep I bought the paint ☹️) the accent wall (toilet and sink wall 59 inches wide ) in matt black, with small checker board style black and white floor tile and everything else white, even the shower curtain, trim and door. The house is mid-century modern in a rural setting. So again as I mentioned in an earlier comment I am not sure whether this idea is too contemporary for the rural farmland setting. Now after watching this video I am thinking all white walls with black accents ie black and white floor tiles, shelving etc. Am I catching on? Sometimes I get married to an idea, go buy the paint, sometimes apply it and then realize my artist's brain needs to stick to painting canvases! 😜. I think one if my problems is that I am a visual artist who loves colour but my husband feels uncomfortable with colour and always picks neutrals. So after many years of not wanting to rock the boat I have started to assert myself. But I think I am going too far. After watching your video on small spaces I stopped myself painting two walls of our small dining room that is part of the living room and hallway... in vivid red. I was going light grey on all other walls with white ceilings . I even bought the red paint. I think our colour and style preferences are so much a part of our emotional life and who we are that we can get ourselves caught up in a tug of war with others and not be able to see the woods for the trees. Watching your videos have made me question why I become married to an idea. What is driving my decisions? I can imagine you have learned to work with couples where each person has different tastes and helped them come to a compromise without one overpowering the other. I imagine there is a lot of skill involved in that part of your work. Often what happens with our home is that we can't agree on anything so it gets left for years. Then I get frustrated and do something drastic on impulse because I am fed-up with it looking old. For example I painted our 70inch by 60inch entranceway in charcoal grey 5 years ago. It transformed the space and looks great but....as it is connected to the living space and the living space didn't get painted at the same time, I am concerned it will look like a black hole if I am not careful about what colour to go with. So perhaps I will end up repainting the entrance. 🥺😩😖. You are teaching me so much and helping me to build know-how and confidence. I so appreciate you!

OMG this comment!!! 👏🏻👏🏻💕 I SO hear what you're saying and I can TOTALLY understand...becoming attached to your vision is definitely part of being a creative person!!! 🤩🤩 I love your approach of following your gut but also thinking critically about your decisions...SO important when making decisions that will hopefully last for years in your home!! 😂❤️ I am SO honored to just be a part of your creative process, and I LOVE hearing that these videos have been helpful!! My only bathroom is a 5x7 space with 1950’s pink tile covering most of it. I painted the walls dark gray and have a lighter gray vanity with white top. Accent color is red. I have a hallway linen closet for towel/cleaning supply storage, and my makeup table is in another room under natural light. None of these ideas apply to a tiny 1950’s Cape Cod. Guess we have different definitions of “tiny.” LOL

Please don’t place your towels above toilet. It’s not sanitary, when you flush, the particles float all over your bathroom and will sit on toothbrushes and towel. Towels stay fresh when away from humidity of a bathroom after all. Close the lid when flush, it will reduce the nastiness in the air. However, if you have a huge bathroom then go crazy and place all your towels in the bathroom;))

I use an over the door cloth shoe holder... the ones with pockets.... in my closet. There are shoes in it, but also things like nail polish and small odds and ends I don’t know what to do with. I’ve thought about using one over my bathroom door to hold cleaning supplies, curling iron, maybe hair dryer, etc. I’m not sure because the cleaning supplies are sometimes wet after using them, and I’m concerned the cloth pockets will soon get musty from the steam in the bathroom.
