Ten Hag benched Martinez because he didn't think he was suited to keep playing in midfield. Only after injuries he came in at center back. And became the player he is now. So I really really doubt when he wasn't trusted to play in midfield in the Eredivisie that Ten Hag will play him in that position at United.

I can’t see varane being a rotation option. He’s far too good for that, and let’s face it even though Maguire probably thinks he isn’t, varane is levels above Harry. In the Liverpool Game varane was showing really good signs of engaging the attackers when defending. Which ten hag will have seen. Whereas Maguire started and within 3 minutes was already exposed in the high line.

I think everyone has taken Ten Hag's 'Maguire is captain' statement too far. He has only been there for a short time and at the time of that press conference he hadn't even trained with Maguire. Anyone who has watched him play knows that he will get exposed constantly in a high line, which is central to Ten Hag's philosophy. It wouldn't make sense for Ten Hag to pick his captain so soon, so he's clearly just delayed the decision. Anyone who thinks Maguire will start just because of that one comment isn't thinking straight.

I guess another point is consider about Maguire getting "exposed constantly in a high line" is that it simply doesn't happen at England at International level. So, it highlights the importance of a goalkeeper when it comes to playing a high line. In fact, one of the reason de Gea is now 4th choice keeper for Spain is because statistically he was one of the worst keepers in Europe when it came to sweeper actions and commanding his box (he was also very poor with ball at his feet, which is incredibly important for ten Hag). Imo getting a more commanding keeper who's comfortable sweeping is more important than replacing Maguire as many of Maguire's weaknesses won't be as evident with a more proactive keeper.

I agree that De Gea will be a problem in Ten Hags system, but using that as an an excuse for Maguire says a lot about him as a player.

Martinez seems to be very similar to Daley Blind. Positionally sound, good anticipation for interceptions & headers, good composure under pressure while playing out from the back, good passing range, can play in multiple positions in defence and even as a defensive midfielder etc. I really hate to say it, but on paper, this looks like a really good deal.

Before I say anything - I do not think a defender needs to be 6ft4inches to be good - however I do feel there is aanever changing upper & lower bound for a CBs height and Martinez would be a 45million pound experiment to define that lower bound. Here's a question or an opinion as a form of a question: I wanted to ask Seb Stafford Bloor after the podcast 2 weeks or so ago. United would become a possession-based team & they will have the personnel & tactics to overcome at least 10 teams in the PL by default. Under Ten Haag, United would ideally want to play narrow defensively (to press the area of play) But up against a City Liverpool Chelsea or Spurs even Wolves & Villa wouldn't a "simple switch" & cross to the back post to a tall striker running in behind would be an ever-present threat The reason why I think that is a glaring problem so to speak & why I am focued on this aspect. Last year in UCL Martinez won 55% of his Aerials. In the last 365 days via FBref he ranks 23rd percentile for Aerials Won & 20th percentile for the percentage of Aerials won. Also, something I did see last year in the UCL campaign & before posting this comment went looking thru highlights of all UCL games last year - he also steps up/closes down/presses very ineffectively a lot of the time & I do not know if it down to manager instructions or just a thing he does. Sure his height's a problem. But for everything else he brings to the squad, he's worth every coin. He's perfect in terms of build up play, stepping into midfield and progressing play, switching the play and his best attribute as a defender is his aggressiveness to close attackers down and snap up lose balls, sth that's currently not really in the squad. Well de jong has a peculiar situation which is Barcelona doesn't want to give him the €16 million that they owe him due to the pay cut de jong took for the club to survive. If de jong leaves right now then his contract is invalid and Barcelona doesn't have to pay him but de jong can also wait it out and Barcelona then has to pay de jong what's owed. Once that's sorted I'm sure de jong will be more willing to play for united.

A captain is just the captain but doesn't mean he's an automatic starter. Normally yes but there are many examples where the captain isn't a starter.. He's just the official captain which he is when he's playing.. Lisandro will play as the LCB with Varane I guess coz it would be crazy to bench a 4 time CL winner and one of the best CB in the world for a player who isn't mobile enough, too slow and only ok on the ball. If Varane is fit he must play alongside Lisandro. Maguire the captain is just a formality. Ten Hag will play the players who fit his system best. From what I know its Lisandro on the left and Varane on the right. This makes most sense coz both are good on the ball and have the necessary recovery pace to play in a high defensive line

Their all rubbish or injury prone mate. Baily, Jones, Tunzenbe are all only staying at the club cause we cant get rid of them because noone would be stupid enough to match the salaries we gave them. Lindelof has been fine, hes decent as a squad play and might offer more under Ten Hag. Maguire is almost certainly too slow for a high line but we spent 80m on him and pay him loads so is going to feature like it or not. Varane, gets injured if he sees someone else getting tackled and, while still clearly very classy and good, I'm not convinced he'll have the hunger to play the way Ten Hag will want and we ultimatly fizzle into being a bench player and then move on at the end of the year. Literally Martinez is probably the only 1 of our CD that Ten Hag is happy with.

So that means there's only one free spot at CB which you'd imagine is reserved for Varane on the odd occasion he happens to be fit. That's why I think It'll be Martinez and that useless clown Fred in midfield. Mctominay will FINALLY drop out and be relegated to being a rotation player. Where he plays doesn't really matter. United are choosing to go into the new season with Maguire and Fred in the team. They're clearly not good enough so it's going to be another season of disappointment. You could throw de jong into the team but as long as those two jokers are pissing goals and possession away, United have absolutely no chance of competing. Tuanzebe, Baily, Jones will most likely be sold. That leaves us with Martinez, Maguire, Varane and Lindelof. Varane was consistently injury prone last season so if we take that into account we are most likely gonna have 3 senior CBs. If Maguire continues his horrendous form from last season he is definitely going to be dropped.

Eth can certainly convert players to play in different positions, eth would like a player that can seamlessly integrate into the backline and midfield, the board is not going to want to drop Maguire he's England's captain and also eth hasn't played with varane or lindelof to know whether they would work or not, so just throwing them out won't make sense, that's why he bought a player that is versatile in different positions to cover if another player is injured, varane and lindelof are good cbs and throwing them out or dropping them would be incredibly stupid, Martinez is most definitely going to play in the cdm role, anybody who disagrees is just following what everyone else is saying

Only issue with the rationale behind your passing out to full backs is you’ve completely missed the fact that in United’s 2 pre-season games under ETH the full backs have basically been playing as inverted wing backs and massively tucked in, allowing the wingers to have more space out wide. Therefore the ‘curved pass’ out to full back rationale doesn’t feel quite accurate…

The whole he's too short for CB is nonsense. United would give an arm for a proper defensive player. Martinez can be a no nonsense 6, as Jon says, or a smart left CB. How many top flight teams play long balls into CFs nowadays anyway? Against lower placed sides, United would back themselves to dominate and turn possession higher up the pitch. He seems to have a bulldog feel about him, and hopefully will bring much needed energy and ruthlessness in defence. Also, have you seen his passing range? Makes sense all day.

Mate, you've done all this analysis about how tall he is and his aerial ability, compared Argentina and Holland stats but failed to mention anything about the height of the opponents, Argentinians are one of the shortest countries on average in height. The Netherlands is the tallest on average. There national leagues reflect this. This is the major difference between his heading stats.

I really don't think Martinez will ever play in the midfield, unless we get really short. It's a popular theory, and I think it's a bit shortsighted and naive. So ten Hag initially wanted Timber as a CB, couldn't get him, so pivoted to Martinez. We also don't have any left footed CBs, so the split CBs can't play the ball wide in the way ten Hag wants, and we've already seen Maguire shifted to the right in preparation for Martinez's arrival. He also has some much needed pace to cover the high line. Its obvious how he'll be used in the defence, but the other part is how he would function in the midfield. I really don't think he would. Watching the preseason, it's clear that ten Hag wants his midfield really high up the pitch, helped by the high CBs. This is a high press, taking the ball off the back 4, initiating the press, and also getting forward to the edge of the box and beyond to provide passing options and passes into the forwards. If Martinez sits in the midfield, he's too far forward for his preferences, and isn't that good in the final third, which is a big part of how ten Hag plays. By being in the backline he's effectively in that defensive midfield role that he suits much more, playing that left side CB role he excelled in last season.
