I think what I love the most about this series is Anya's success through failure. Contrary to her "parents" she is not great at anything, but you feel for her when she gives her all, and even when most of the time her all is not enough, you feel satisfied with the actual results.

The author of this series, Tatsuya Endo, is known for having all his manga series discontinued because the stories went intensely dark and depressing. It drives away the readers. The reason why he's managed to keep it light this time around is because his current manager is holding him back. But you can still see a little of that darkness, like in the recent flashback chapters.

as a comic artist, the fight with Yor on the cruise with the parallel panels swapping back and forth between bloody fight upstairs and casino nonsense/fireworks show elsewhere had my jaw on the floor. Absolutely masterful panel work and flow in that sequence that made the fighting tense and engaging while also being consistently funny and surprising. It's weird to talk about a comic having 'comedic timing', but controling the flow of the reader's eyes and how long each panel 'feels' in comparison to the others is an actual skill you can cultivate, and that sequence shows off beautifully how effective it can be.

As someone who has followed this series from chapter 5 onwards I was very certain you'd appreciate this series for its premise and especially the found family aspect. And I really have to recommend the anime adaptation for this one. It truly is an improvement to its source in every aspect and Yor is voiced by Yamato's VA. Also the world in this show is just heavily inspired by post WW2 germany with the east west conflict, hence it's playing in "Berlint" with the secret police being very closely tailored after the GeStaPo (secret state police) which has been an actual thing in history.

When you started talking about the gut punch I thought you'd talk about Handler's speech.. It's the thing that sticks with most people who read SpyxFamily when they hit Chapter 20 and that speech. When she goes on into the depths of the utter hell that is war and even with it just being text on the page, from her expressions alone you know how calmly and quietly she's recounting what sounds very much like personal history of death, starvation and the trauma and even survivors guilt. And the background of this little speech is someone who has lived experiences talking to college kids trying to start a war for nationalistic reasons not really understanding what that war will mean. They plan to do something terrible in order to in their minds do a great good.... but they have no idea the horrors they plan to unleash..

I've only watched the anime so I'm not that far into the story but I've loved every second of it. It didn't matter if the moment was relaxing or action packed or funny or serious or a mix of them, everything hit me just right (the VA's work and the music is also amazing). That said, for me the best part is the family itself. All three of them know it's a fake family and that they are there for selfish reasons, but that doesn't stop them from truly care for each other. If Anya is in danger or suffers in any way, Yor and/or Loid step in as any loving parent would (personally I love seeing Yor with her murderous face being like "what do you think you're doing to my daughter?"); and if it's Yor or Loid the one having any trouble, then the other "partner" or Anya herself is the one trying to help them in their own way. Basically I love how in this very disfunctional family that's built on lies we end up also seeing a very loving, caring and overall "real" family.

one of my favorite things about anya is the way she interacts with the world by piecing together knowledge from everyone's minds. since that means such a vast array of experiences and maturity levels, it makes her speech sound so silly while clever at the same time. it becomes this really fun mash of a really small kid's innocence, and their creativity and imagination, and concepts she doesn't really understand yet but has sort of picked up the context from someone's thoughts and then repurposes it for her child's brain. there's a video about the way she speaks japanese that touches on this too, because of the rules of the language that she doesn't fully understand since she hasn't had formal schooling yet and is probably younger than her classmates. she's just! the cutest and the best!

I think the reason series like this can do so many things at once is that the different parts feed into each other, the comedy improves the drama because it makes you care about the characters, the drama improves the action because it give it stakes and the action improves the comedy because it's usually so comically over the top even while being extremely cool.

I got into this story a few weeks ago, and I LOVE IT! Lloyd and Yor are so cool. One thing I find interesting is how the incidental home-making skills they both possess make sense in relation to their professions. For example, Yor cleans the house, but she's so good at cleaning because of her career as a hitman. Of course a hitman would be good at cleaning, because it may become necessary to hide a body or two or five... So far, Handler is my favorite character. She gets stuff done, and I love her for it. @piggylady2252 жыл бұрын
@@DanielKimdanielkim90 Here's what I've come up with so far... (spoilers) There are two parties in Ostania: the National Unity Party and the Nationalist Party (not confusing at all, I know). The National Unity Party is the one that Desmond leads, and was in power during the war. From Twilight's mission and other various hints, they seem to want to start another war. The Nationalist Party, on the other hand, is anti-war, and the ones who are in power during the story. This is why WISE was, in a weird way, working with the government during Doggy Crisis; at the very least, they're the lesser of two evils, and preventing war is a common interest. It's safe to assume that the SSS and Garden operate according to the Nationalist Party's ideals, which is to prevent war. The Garden in particular has a telling moment where the Shopkeeper tells Yor to protect Olka Gretcher from the "pro war" usurper of that organization. He also mentions that he owes a debt to her husband, who ran that organization and played a large role in helping Ostania recover after the war. We see similar hints from Yuri's escapades in the Secret Police. So it seems like everyone's on the same side: war bad. But I don't think any of them realize it, thanks to oversimplified politics. WISE might know a little bit, but they can't really say as much without admitting to espionage, which is a huge no-no. The SSS and Garden are probably convinced that WISE is trying to start a war, and they have to prevent them from doing so by murdering their agents. These attitudes obiously trickle down to Yuri, Yor, and Loid, who judge the other organizations accordingly. I think this will be important during the inevitable Mr. & Mrs. Smith fight between Yor and Loid; they'll probably start out trying to kill each other, but if someone (coghcough Anya coughcough) can convince them that they're doing it for the same reasons, they may be able to resolve it. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

5:50 Waku waku is sfx for "exciting" instead of "so cool" and it's something that Luffy says in the intro of OP6 Bon Voyage. or Shiro in No Game No Life

Whenever someone brings up the art of the page turn, my mind always jumps to my favorite comedy manga, Grand Blue. Its style of comedy is definitely not for everyone and might not jive with you, but its page turn moments are so effective.

Really happy to see you cover this series! It’s my favourite manga. Agree 100% on all your points. Especially on the action. Because I feel a lot of the times in manga it’s kind of hard to tell what’s going on action wise but in SxF there’s always just enough information between panels to the point you’re never confused reading the series. Also yeah all the Anya stuff is awesome. She is smart but she’s also still a child so I love the moments where she can understand the words being said but doesn’t really understand. Just everything about the series is so heartwarming!

So i started reading it because of your recommendation, and you're absolutely right. It's really wonderful and Anya is probably one of the best depicted and most likable junior character i've ever seen, she's so much fun. And Lloyd and Yor trying to be parents and growing ever closer as a family just is such a great and heartwarming plotline to follow. I also really enjoy Fiona's/Nightfall's character, she's amazing. The addition of Bond as well is probably one of my absolute favourite things about this manga. Anya reminds me a lot of Yotsuba, which might as well be to your liking for a light read. Yotsuba& is a very fluffy slice of life manga that doesn't have any of the harsh reality moments, but just focuses on the characters, the wholesomeness and the comedy.

i liked the plotline of the kid whose dad business was supposedly going under, and there was this whole heartwarming scene of all the kids dancing, and giving him stuff to cheer him up... Only for his dad's company having just been bought up, nothing really changed, and the next day he had to return to school and become a social outcast.

Have you considered checking out the anime at all? I know that you aren’t a big tv person, but this show is so worth it! It is a very faithful adaptation, the action scenes look amazing, and they add some extra pizzazz to side stories like the dodgeball game and the castle party. Not to mention the music and voice acting are both phenomenal. I picked up the manga because of you, Merphy, so I just want to say thank you! I have fallen so in love with everything about this story! Thank you so much for introducing me to this absolutely beautiful, hilarious, heartwarming story!

A story doesn't need to be revolutionary, deep or new. It can be perfect the way it is if it uses its strenghts and unique ideas; this is certainly true for spy x family. I really don't enjoy slice of life type of manga-stories but spy x family is something i enjoy a lot and i didn't expect it. Funny ad segment :) Loved it!

I feel the same about Black Clover. Doesn't really do anything new, but does it well with characters you get attached to.

Wow that ad integration was absolutely 10/10 I watched the entire ad segment despite always skipping them normally. Boxu: Pay this woman. Pay her now.

So many anime have children that I feel like I'm supposed to like but their whole character is "hehe I'm cute! I love my mommy and daddy soo much!" Or they just make them adults but in a child's body. Anya manages to feel like a kid, be cute, but also have a personality and its great. Also the slowly become a real family is so great.

Yor isn’t a government assassin, so it’s unlikely she’d be assigned to kill Twilight. She’s a private assassin who receives hits from someone named the Shopkeeper if I remember correctly, and they’re closer to mafias than governments. If Yor was an assassin for the government, secret police wouldn’t be a problem, she wouldn’t need a fake job.

I started reading the manga fairly early on, and I've been so overawed to see everyone get obsessed with it. It's so wonderful to hear people gush about something I've loved for so long.

If there's one word for me to describe this series, it's gotta be "profound". As silly and wholesome as this series may be, I got a lot of noteworthy lessons about family and education from it, something that I can contemplate and are applicable to your day to day life. So yes, this is a great series.

One of the best moments of the show is when Yor tells Yuri that she completely forgot to tell him about her marriage 😂 the Loid's face drops is the best.

I love Spy x Family. I'm hoping we get some development between either Yor and Loid on a romantic level or finding out about each other's jobs soon. I assume that would all come out around the same time. Maybe they go on a real date and they get a mission to go after each other at the same time.

Merphy your acting getting good, I swear I couldn't tell you were about to go into a skit. I thought someone literally came home while you were filming and you had to go check it out 😂

now that part one of the anime is finished (split cour so part 2 is going to start in the fall) you should definitely watch it if you haven't already. There is a lot of anime only stuff in there which normally is a cause for concern for me but in this case they just make everything even better. Clover Works and Wit studios also just did an amazing job with the animation so Anya is even cuter than she is in the manga and the action in motion is also really good. Anya's VA also does an incredible job at making her sound really cute. Not to mention that Loid and Yor are voiced by Takuya Eguchi and Hayami Saori, the VAs of my two favorite characters from my favorite anime, Oregairu.
