Prosecution has multiple witnesses that say that this was a payoff, done fraudulently, directed by Trump. Trump's defense could claim that Cohen was a nobody and never had access to Trump. Here is Cohen in the room with Trump (direct access) discussing another hush money payment. It helps the prosecution build the case that Cohen was the guy that did this work for Trump. So when they can show that Cohen setup another shell company at the same time as the alleged hush money payment... the paper trail along with the knowledge that this is what Cohen did for Trump helps tie things together.

Here's the real answer: the recording on its own is pretty banal but it was used in the trial to strengthen the legitimacy of one particular part of the overall narrative. It's mostly useful for the bit at the end so they can prove he had knowledge of the company being set up and thus, in conjunction with other evidence, support the idea he knew about the entire hush money scheme.

That's the nature of evidence. It isn't one piece of evidence - it is putting it all together. We have multiple witnesses saying this was a payoff and the paper trail to back it up. This audio recording serves, at a bare minimum, that Cohen was "in the room where it happens." Trump's defense can't deny Cohen was a fixer, which was what Cohen claims he was.

Proves nothing.. Aside from the chain of custody issues as to how the audio file ( recoded in 2015) was downloaded on a cell phone that was factory reset in 2017 .. The prosecution expert witness can't explain how this could have happened, and from which device the audio was downloaded from. Inadmissible evidence without a chain of custody.

It proves that Trump knew about the payments and approved of the Cohen's methods of attempting to hide them. The payments were documented as legal fees to Cohen is tax deductible for Trump and considered income for Cohen. Even though for Cohen is wasn't income but a reimbursement. Both men were commiting a crime with that transaction. Big brained business men know these laws inside and out and Trump knew exactly what he was doing.
