In 1992, this epically inspiring speech resonated with my frustrated 15-year-old self and so many of us. As it seemingly reverberated around the world, it offered us some glimmer of hope that the adults in charge might finally listen to reason and give the next generation the chance to change and do better. Yet in 30 years, our immense technological progress mostly seems to distract us from the repeated utter failings on a global scale.
@brebrown5338 Жыл бұрын
It’s funny how that’s what you got from it. How about the same old routine of using kids to fire up the youth on global issues that aren’t real. Holes in the ozone? Where did that go? Now we have Greta doing the same thing over global warming. Again, a made up narrative that will disappear in a couple decades when we aren’t under water. Yes, David Suzuki's daughter was right. The rain forests are now gone, along with all the animals. I could have sworn ozone depletion was halted in the '80s, but apparently we're all nearly dead from UV radiation. In 1992 this little girl was afraid to go fishing, afraid to go in the sun, and even afraid to breathe the air. FOR REAL. She was totally afraid of all that and still is because everything's worse now. Remember salmon? Remember trees? Hopefully she's passed this ostensible paranoia on to her kids.

This used to be posted as a YT video (now taken down) a decade or more ago, called something along the lines of "the greatest speech ever", and I remember it clearly because I keep going back to it since it was a really compelling speech. Fast forward 2023, I search 'greatest speech ever' but I find out the old video was gone and my search is filled with videos of other supposedly 'great' speeches - one of the channels that claims to post the greatest speech is a channel called 'Alpha Male'. I can't help but feel that since a decade ago, there has been a radical shift to the right and the 'idea' that the Overton window is what it is now with people talking more openly with their conservative points with no willingness to hear the other side as being apart of this radical shift. The same could be claimed of the radical left. But although this is true it can't be said it's because of the views themselves. The way apps are being built, with their filters and the algorithms behind these social platforms with their 'experts' who strategise how to pull the viewer more into a streamline view (of like-like posts) - it could be blamed for undermining a free flow discussion where you have multiple perspectives who are able to share. However because of the filters they put into pockets groups of people with like minded views and opinions. But being aware of this, one should have a moral obligation to hear out the other views with a stance of initial non-judgement until it's clear that it's either extreme, diagonal, false, genuine, funny, sad, happy. The real problem is that we are so readily open to judge the other and would only hold onto those views most like our own... Or who's interests align with ours we forget what being egalitarian really means. Not to mention the trolls who intentionally create dissenting opinions out of bad faith. Which the social platforms supposedly support, but forget that the nature of social network is to develop bubbles not a pool.

3:50 '5 billion' then - and now we are 8 billion. Sure, people in industrialized countries can live with less, but it seems unfair to expect around a billion people to maintain an extremely low standard of living so as not to increase environmental impact. I can't imagine having to wash clothes by hand or go without air conditioning in the summer heat. It's time to think seriously about population. I did my part, I only had one child - one single, precious child.

This girl who is now an adult woman is such a much better person than me in what she says and does. By speaking there. This is true love. We and the planet opposite I would have seen it earlier, she would probably have become my role model and not Michael Jorden. Thank you dear Severn Susuki you are a true role model. And to all those who long for it wake up and do not think only of you. Everyone can make their contribution and prevent the unscrupulous can continue so the girl has something of right in what she says. I've never been as impressed by a person as I have been. And I am now 38 years old and have already known many people and heard many talk. I hope Severn Susuki is doing well in 2020

Only if those delegates from all governments in the world had really taken action instead of just listening and clapping, our precious planet and its billions would not be in this catastrophic situation today .

hello everybody. Today Greta Tunberg is travelling to the UN Center in New York. Since 1992 please remember that 27 years had passed and our global climate system still is going straight to the big crash. I am very afraid if we will have 27 years more for correcting the direction and saving our living room "Earth". Thanks and greetings. Stefan

But Greta Thunberg has rich parents and a PR agency supporting her
@stefanlenz90485 жыл бұрын
@@viciousqueen5096 OK. Bill Gates is also a very rich man and does a lot for people, who need help. And there are already a lot of PR companies in the world. How can we distinguish the PR of Greta Tunberg¡s parents and the others? There is so much information in the internet, television, radio etc, that it is imposible to reach the people by this way. But the point is, that we all together have to do our best and a little bit more in order to achieve a change in the world. We all need to talk to our neigbours, friends and families and convince them about the purpose and sense of these actions.
