Bobby jameson was a Los Angeles musician who died in obscurity despite being surrounded by a bunch of other colleagues that found immediate success in the 1960s. I've been a big Ariel fan for over 10 years- I think this is my favorite album of his is this one. Pom Pom is a departure from is core style.

ariel pink tries to capture the memories he had of listening to 70s and early 80s music when he was growing up which might be why some things sound familiar

Oh mai gawd, you are reviewing "DTBJ"!!! You have no idea how much this album got me through Hurricane Harvey last year. It's all I listened to for 4 months. "Time to Live" is my JAM!! Not sure what to tell you about Stevie... He's a national treasure. I think it's fine to compare songs to other songs and musicians to other musicians... It's those who are incomparable that excite me the most. Will check out Johnny Hates Jazz. Straight up giggled at your claps during Bubble Gum Dreams!! :) YES!! Pom Pom is more of the "full Ariel Pink experience" and has the characters you were mentioning earlier on in this video. It's a very quirky album. "DTBJ" is more mature and stripped back. IDK... I think I like Pom Pom more that "DTBJ"... According to Wikipedia, "the album was named in honor of Bobby Jameson, a 1960s singer-songwriter who retreated from the music industry after a series of misfortunes. In 2007, Jameson resurfaced with an autobiographical blog that alleged wrongdoing on the part of various managers and record company agents, which he maintained until his passing. After Jameson died in 2015, Pink learned of him through a mutual friend, [and she pointed me to some of his KZbin rantings. That sort of led me to his blog, which is like his unpublished autobiography, and I read that.] Pink said that Jameson's [life resonated with me to such a degree that I felt a need to dedicate my latest record to him.]"

Quite enjoyed this review Mr. Number Six. Your enthusiasm is infectious and as you reference other groups I'm thinking the same thing. Brilliant. Bobby Jameson was an American musician who had a promising, albeit very brief career in the late 60's. He succumbed to poor management, mental health and substance abuse issues and fell into obscurity in the 70's. Entirely disillusioned by the industry, he never returned to his craft, but started an autobiographical blog in 2007. Ariel "Pink" Rosenberg stumbled upon the blog entirely by chance and was enthralled by the drama and intrigue which inspired "Dedicated" and was based loosely around Jameson's life. As Mark Kozelek said, if it were 1975 Ariel Pink would be David Bowie. His artistic output is prolific and unprecedented. I would highly recommend a listen to John Maus' 2011 album, "We Must Become the Pitiless Sensors of Ourselves". John and Ariel met at CalArts in '97 and became close friends. John was an original member of Ariel's earlier project, "Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti". Both Pink and Maus' entire catalogues are thoroughly compelling and worth further investigation. Cheers mate, kudos, and looking forward to many more listening parties!

Two killer tracks (“Dedicated to Bobby Jameson” and the beautiful “Another Weekend”) and what an album cover. Gorgeous. Pom Pom is all out weird but it hasn’t got an absolute standout like “Another Weekend”, the track that comes close is maybe “Lipstick”. I guess I’m a fan of his pop side more than of his other sides.

I preferred when your discover videos were more like this. Where you really listened to the music and gave serious thoughts an critiques. Really made it feel like I’m hanging with a friend and enjoying a record. Your newer discovers are fine and I understand a lot of it has to do with copyright claims and whatnot, but they’re just becoming gimmicky now. I enjoyed this format much more. Thanks
@mercurialno6
@mercurialno6 5 жыл бұрын
Can't do enjoyment anymore. If I'm not talking it's blocked. If I am talking it's still blocked. So I've got to make sure that no-one can hear any music whatsoever. Then there's the problem of thinking of things to say for the 80th time. That's a lot of talking. I think I've used up every anecdote now. And when it comes to 'talking about the music' that becomes more and more difficult. Great beat. Nice chord. Sounds like (insert band name). There's only gimmicks left. I'm just trying to get to 100. I would say not long to go... but it's still over 20 albums. The only way I can keep it up is to not talk about the music at all. That'll certainly alienate you! Ha ha!
@brandonburroughs7128
@brandonburroughs7128 5 жыл бұрын
The Mercurial Number Six I understand the dilemma. And I still appreciate the content, but is there anyway you can give more of a talking review of the album at the end of the video? I genuinely wanna know your thoughts on a lot of these records. Not just a bunch of anecdotes, but with your last two discovers or so it’s hard to know if you even liked it or not. Hard to tell when you’re making fun of it or enjoying it; if that makes sense. Just giving feedback. I still appreciate the content so thanks!
@mercurialno6
@mercurialno6 5 жыл бұрын
@@brandonburroughs7128 Always appreciate the feedback. Hmmmm...for instance... the latest Dis-Cover... which I am editing right now... I decided to drink a bottle of JD. Now, in the edit I fully appreciate that this was a TERRIBLE idea. I don't know if anyone noticed... but I stopped drinking for a good number of Dis-Covers. Probably for about half a year. And then I forgot why I stopped drinking during them. And I now I remember again! Ha ha! Now I have to salvage something usable from a catastrophe! On the positive side I am forever learning. I'm always a little disappointed that people seem to only want Dis-Covers from me. I mean disappointed in that when I get to 100 I'll probably have to close the channel down because I'll have nothing else that people want. In the meantime I have to try and make these videos enjoyable for myself rather than a chore! I understand where you're coming from. I might even do some 'revisit' Dis-Covers where I listen to an album again with the benefit of hindsight. That would probably satisfy what you're talking about? But... for everyone's info... there has really only been one album that I haven't particularly liked in the whole Dis-Cover series. That's not a bad ratio! But then I tend to see positives in a lot of music where other people might be immediately dismissive!
