Apart from a threat of the use of nuclear weapons, what negotiating position does Putin have? How does he deal with a firm no: leave Ukraine, which includes Crimea?

That he’ll keep going - he’s relying on the west esp to wish the war would go away, and lots of his actions are to try and engender the fear “he could do anything” but obv as time has gone on - the range of horrible things he can do has become finite and no more than what he is doing. There are no tricks left … I’m sure the reason why he’s been bombing civilian cities in Ukraine is not because there’s any benefit from it whatsoever - but to underscore a belief he does terrible things so he could really do terrible things … making himself be perceived as scarily as he can as that suits him as setting opponents in the best frame of mind from his perspective. The snag is we’ve all grown tired of those games, and the west realises other than size, the Russian army is fairly “meh”. They can’t obviously increase the level of what they’re doing. They’re doing all they can. They’ve similarly for decades tried to engender a belief in other counties that they are very competent and very scary. All those psychology games aren’t being backed up by what they’ve managed however. The only other thing he can do is hope he can get trump to see that if Ukraine are forced to capitulate, Putin will allow trump to claim he stopped the war, so trump is popular domestically … snag is for Putin ,trump’s ego is large so doesn’t obviously need Putin….

On the other hand Ukrainian do not want to fight anymore, escape the draft and cannot manage to train enough soldiers. With the lack of Western support Ukrainian line might break, and then game over.

He deals with it by saying "make me", knowing well the lack of appetite for that in the west. After all Ukraine doesn't have the manpower and equipment to win those territories back by force without unaffordable casualty numbers, while NATO doesn't want to get involved much more than the current level either. So Ukraine's only viable strategy for total victory is to keep striking Russia's economy until it can no longer even afford the military to hold onto the occupied territory, but that will take a few more years.

Russia is not losing-not now, not in the foreseeable future, and definitely not in the next few months. While Ukraine has mounted significant resistance, and the war has had a heavy toll on Russia, Russia still has the capability to win this conflict, and it hasn't even been forced to go all-in yet. The difference here is that Russia can mobilize far more resources and manpower if it feels truly threatened, which is something that Ukraine simply cannot match. Russia has held back from full-scale mobilization because they don’t feel sufficiently threatened to warrant it. Why would they sacrifice their civilian economy and push the country into a total war state when they believe they can still achieve their goals without it? In a limited conflict, Russia has the edge. They are not in the same position as Ukraine, which is already operating under severe limitations, having already mobilized nearly everything it can. Now, let’s talk about mobilization. Russia has demonstrated time and time again that, when necessary, they can scale up their forces dramatically. Russia can mobilize up to 1-2 million men, and they can keep this up for years if needed. And unlike Ukraine, which has reached its limits on mobilization, Russia can continue ramping up its forces year after year, whether it's 500,000 men per year or up to a million. This would drastically increase Russia’s forces, further tipping the scales in their favor. To put this in perspective, if Russia were to fully mobilize, they could push their forces into the millions-a scale we haven’t seen in modern conflicts. Realistically, we’re talking about mobilizing 5, 6, or even 7 million men. This could happen within the next few years, making the war resemble World War II in scale. This isn’t just about numbers, though. The resources Russia can tap into are practically unlimited compared to Ukraine. Russia has vast reserves of artillery, ammunition, equipment, and most importantly, manpower. And while a total war would undoubtedly strain Russia’s economy, it would be less humiliating than losing. In fact, the consequences of Russia’s full mobilization would be severe, but the consequences of losing the war and letting Ukraine expel them from Crimea or the Donbas would be far worse-for both Russia’s prestige and for Putin personally. Ukraine is already operating under a total war economy, but it’s already stretched beyond its limits. It has been mobilizing older men and people who are less fit to fight. The war effort is putting massive strain on its economy. If Ukraine had to keep increasing mobilization, they’d soon be facing even older, less capable soldiers, making their efforts unsustainable. On the other hand, Russia still has the ability to field fresh recruits and draw from a far larger pool of reserves-an advantage Ukraine can’t match. Now, in a total war economy, GDP doesn’t matter as much as people think. In total war, the focus shifts from sustaining civilian life to producing war material at any cost. We saw this in World War II, where the Soviet Union operated for months with almost zero GDP, yet still managed to recover and out-produce its enemies. The key is how much physical material your economy can make to fuel the war effort. For example, if people are starving to death but the country can produce two more tanks instead of food, that’s what matters in total war. The war economy focuses on raw output rather than civilian well-being. Russia can go into a full mobilization mode and sacrifice its civilian economy for military production, and still sustain the war effort over an extended period. In summary, Russia is not losing, and it won’t lose anytime soon. If they decide to escalate, the scales will tip massively in their favor. Ukraine’s ability to continue this war is already limited, and once Russia starts fully mobilizing, there’s simply no way Ukraine can compete. The potential consequences for Ukraine are catastrophic, and no peace deal would be kind to them. Russia can wait. And if necessary, they can make the war go on much longer. The only question is whether the West will continue to support Ukraine and for how long. Without that support, the reality of total war in Ukraine becomes inevitable, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

@@jensstergard9380 I was borh there and served in the Royal Marines in the Falklands War and Northern Ireland. Then there were stark choices between Mrs Thatcher and Mr Foot. What I was referring to is that now both major parties are almost indistinguishable in their policies.

That would be very encouraging. What makes me disillusioned is that most people don’t seem to be able to depart from the two party system.

Nonsense! Your right to express your opinion freely here is under threat. If D. Trump wants to defend the democratic world, he can do so. If he doesn't the US won't loose just because democracy moves towards an end.

@@MorpheusOnethe conflict in Ukraine is a proxy war of the USA one of the goals was to weaken Russia to the point of collapse Despite the western media misinforming their viewers, the proxy war is a failure It has strengthened the BRICS trading within the participating nations and continues to weaken trade deals between BRICS countries and G7 countries BRICS has surpassed G7 in GDP and the gap will continue to grow as more countries join This failed proxy war is another sign of the crumbling US empire
