If you mean a NATO military buildup on the Polish border before the invasion, yes deterrence would have worked, but that ship has sailed.Even worse was that fact that we let Russia slip into its current political state. Watch Nixon's 1992 interview where he talks about Russia. Amazing stuff. Currently, Russia is getting bled out. Push Russia out of Crimea and you push Russia to the brink. No thanks. I don't want a Russian nuclear war or a Russian civil war.

My God, you guys are ignorant. Russia WAS provoked. Ukraine armies were trained and equipped by the US. The US is using Ukraine to cause economic hardship for Russia. Ukraine's best chance of fully recovering all territory is if Putin's regime collapses, which can happen if we continue increasing the cost to Russia. Russia is in a cycle of perpetual escalation. That has worked well against a weak west over the past 10 years but as the west matches the escalation, Russia is now weakening itself economically politically and strategically.

Putin had showed signs of his ambitions well before 2014 the West leaders had turned a blind eye to him for money and other benefits. It’s very simple the West should stop all trade and completely shut off countries that do not follow are basic rules of law and human rights. No ifs and buts it may cost a bit of money but the effort will be worth it. I believe most China can be turned to be a nicer country and India needs to stop playing the fool or lose business with the West too.

The NHS is a privilege we enjoy as a result of living in a secure and prosperous nation. Security and prosperity go hand in hand and for too long we’ve pretended that “winning” the Cold War was in some way the end of a story instead of the start of a new chapter.

UK might not have enough weapons to send, but US has thousands of M1 tanks, M198 155mm towed arty and M2/M3 IFVs in the desert of Nevada. They could have sent it to Ukraine, but they did not? Whats the calculus here? NATO think Ukraine was enough to hold off Russia indefinitely or somebody wants them to fight for a while?

Strange that Richard Dearlove would say he doubts that Ukraine can recover all of its land. This statement is similar to the statement Mark Milley often repeated while Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. Maybe these two collaborated, or maybe they're both pessimists.

After 14 years of the Tories neglecting or sabotaging every aspect of the UK. After their gorging on the public purse and slashing taxes to the Super-Rich. Surely one week's more than enough to put everything back in proper order. Obviously Starmer's been sitting on his hands doing nothing. Hilarious analysis by Times journalists as always.

Sir Dearlove claims that the West “shut its eyes” to the escalation problem, but strangely omits to point out the West has itself to thank for the escalation in the first place. Sir Richard’s omission to mention, just as much as the Times’ failure to question, the need for a diplomatic resolution reveals what most now know. The hawkish warmongering and rhetoric has little to do with Ukraine and far much more to do with ramping up European and UK spending on NATO. The US can ill afford to prop up the Alliance whilst its own national debt continues to sky rocket 🚀
