Dec. 20, 1989 the United States invaded Panama to topple General Manuel Antonio Noriega...not the 70s. You breezed over why the United States gave back sovereignty over the canal zone to Panama. There was unrest and violence. This led to the Panama Canal treaty of 1977. Also China doesn't own the ports. A Chinese company operates the ports for Panama.
@faithlesshound562120 сағат бұрын
If we are talking about the history of Panama going back to when the US took over work on the canal in 1904, it would not be much of a stretch to look back to 1903, when the US helped American settlers separate the future country from Colombia, of which it had been a part. The treaty surrendering the future canal zone to the US "in perpetuity" was made with staff of the French canal company without the presence of a single Panamanian, the day before a Panamanian delegation arrived in Washington. Over the past century and a half the US has repeatedly invaded and occupied most countries in Central America, and many in the Caribbean. That's the so-called "Monroe Doctrine" of 1823 in action. It was basically "Power comes out of the barrel of a gun" coupled with a grandiose ambition to establish a Greater Yankeestan.

Only POTUS in more than 60yrs to shrink the wealth gap, only POTUS in more than 40yrs with no new wars, only POTUS this century to successfully prevent Russia from invading a European neighbor, brokered more Israeli:m/Muslim peace deals than all other American presidents COMBINED, and he’s the only POTUS in recorded history to take no salary and leave office with less money than he entered with. On Panama, it actually amazes me how European media STILL doesn’t understand Trump when all they’d have to do is read the Art of the Deal to understand exactly what he’s doing here. He believes Panama has been ripping the United States off and this is his opening offer. He’s not actually going to invade Panama. He’s just posturing to get Panama to a negotiation table. He did this EXACT same thing repeatedly in his first term. It worked. Our lives were better and unlike under Obama and Biden the world wasn’t engulfed in flames. Frankly, had Europe just listened to him during his first term this entire war in Ukraine and war in Gaza would’ve been completely avoided. Unfortunately, Europe took the same smug and condescending posture towards him that you’ve exhibited today and as a result all of your countries are poorer and the continent has endured a bloody war in Ukraine for nearly the entire duration of Biden’s presidency. The hatred of Trump in the UK is the most bizarre given that he LOVES the UK, his family keeps investing hundreds of millions in the UK, and he wants to cut a totally free trade deal with the UK, an offer he’d NEVER extend to anyone else. Yet, you hate him and dismiss him which has just opened the door for him to be better friends with other countries instead of your own. My best guess is that’s because elitists, like yourself, aren’t hurting financially so you have the luxury of not helping your own people just to spite President Trump. Best of luck with that strategy. Every other country on the planet envies Trump’s love for your country and yet you just spit in his face and now you’ll be left behind. Well done.

The 77/79 Panama Canal Treaties are illegal under both Panama and US International law because: A treaty between these 2 countries can only be made with the elected President of each country, and Omar Torrijos was a Dictator who was not legally elected but took the position of leader / "General" by unelected force. So, on that one point, the entire Panama Canal 77/79 treaties are invalid, and full ownership of the Canal Zone and Panama Canal is still under U.S. ownership. Even the Supreme Court in Panama states that the 77/79 Panama Canal Treaties are unconditional and invalid. So, if the US wants to take it back, they can 100% do that. Read the book CANAL GATE by Samuel Stoll, it only lists the facts on every argument imaginable, with actual copies of all actual documents. Please forward this on to others.

According to the 1977 Treaty the US has the indefinite right to protect the Panama Canal. The treaty also stipulates the canal should be neutral. The referenced trade deal between Panama and China could be viewed as a violation of the Treaty. China already controlling the canal is a violation.

@koconnor i tried posting a link to an article by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. In which it discusses this. The investments from China plus controlling the main ports gives China great influence and de facto control over the Canal. It degrades the neutrality clause of the treaty and puts Panama in violation of the 1977 treaty. If this is to complicated for you that's ok.
