Retaliation is not escalation. Ukraine can defend itself by attacking weapons storage areas and command centres within a "reasonable" distance from their borders. Short-range missiles such as ATACMS and Storm Shadow/SCALP are reasonable. Using IRBMs is not reasonable and therefore an escalation by Putin. Russia can stop this war tomorrow, should it wish to. Trump has been very quiet over the last few days and that is very unusual for him.
