I spend time with wild horses after only having experience with riding horses and the difference is night and day! I knew so many sour horses, and that was my reason for leaving that world. I remember questioning why the horses were so angry, and being belittled by the humans who owned the place. I ended up working my way up to a well respected dressage stables with spanish stallions, mostly stalled, only allowed out to be ridden in an arena or for shows. I remember suggesting we could let them out for exercise in the field and being roundly ridiculed by all, they are too expensive to let run around. The paddock was purely for brood mares. So then I suggested I could hand walk the stallions individually along the lane to grab some fresh grasses and herbs (and save on hay?!) but nope, they all thought I was weird. Those horses deserved better, I got my ideas from them and their unhappiness. I heard through the grapevine that horses got old and died without ever having their freedom or being able to touch each other :'( My life now is around wild horses and they have taught me so much. They are so kind ♥ All horses are amazing and deserve freedom from people infringing on them and making them miserable with their constant demands.

Horses don't like the splash from their urine to get on their legs as they pee on the ground,so... they like to use their hay to pee on as it is soft and absorbs the splash on their legs.

Well that makes perfect sense! I also wonder if there's a "marking" aspect to it... when the wildies first arrived they would continually pee on the hay, but I noticed as the herd ranking got sorted out, they reduced and eventually stopped.
