Ok, I see a lot of recent comments on here about the BURRS in the horses' manes and tails. These are the seed heads of the burdock plant. We are on a 160 acre WILDERNESS ranch and burdock is all over the place, despite brush mowing. They cause no damage to the horses whatsoever, I check regularly (see video linked below). They actually prefer them in the their tails because they can nail the horseflies better - of which we also have tons, they are huge, and take literal chunks of flesh out of the horses. If I remove the burrs from a horse (which takes 3 hours) in less than 5 hours - not even a day - ALL the burrs are back in again. NO, I will not pour chemicals all over the land to make burdock disappear. I am following regenerative agriculture and permaculture principles. The burdock is HELPING the land - read on... Burdock's medicine is to cleanse and detox. For humans, you can make a tincture from the root and it is fabulous for the liver, spleen, pancreas, gallbladder. In Japan, the root is a popular food (sauteed with carrots - I had it when I lived in Tokyo and it was delicious) called Gobo. For the land, burdock does the same job of cleansing and detoxing, it also pulls up minerals through it's large, deep root and contributes these minerals to the topsoil. This is why you'll often see a lot of burdock on land like this, that was terribly overgrazed by cattle for 15 years before I bought it, or areas where the soil is poor and in need of help. THE HORSES do not mind the burrs at all. They do not want me to remove them. I did remove Zorra's once - took 3 hours and by the evening they were all back in there again. So regardless of how I feel about the burrs, there is literally no point. In this video, the majority of the burrs are actually gone! If you want to see what they looked like last winter when the burrs were the worst, and my discussion with burdock and the horses, watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJLdl4SKr96Wfsk Also note: Most of this herd are WILD HORSES that are well used to all of mother nature's gifts, are not bothered, and have their own ways of dealing with things. They do not require, nor want human assistance most of the time. If they do, they ask me. I will not be answering individual comments about the burrs LOL. I will pin this reply to the top and hopefully people will see it. p.s. If everyone who has posted an accusatory, critical comment about burdock burrs on my videos would donate $10 each, I could get my skid steer fixed and would be able to mow even more of them in August!

Honestly I don't who would keep bringing horses on to a property until you fix the issue... fence some large pastures off with gates so you can control where they are and use bush hoggs the cut the burr plants down while the horses are in another pasture

No excuses Jini - you are in serious denial. How you could allow this to happen to these horses and then laugh about it is astonishing. You are an enlightened woman - fix this problem now - the horses will thank you for it.

@@MrBetc Oooh I LOVE Elderberry - one of my favorites! It's interesting how many herbalists purposely cultivate burdock, when on a property like this (that was abused for so many years) there are just TOO many. However, with selected mowing and allowing the land to balance itself, I don't think they will be such a problem in a few years time.

My previously semi-feral crew lived untouched on a large ranch in the interior of BC and were all malnourished when they went to auction. They all have the same Belgian stallion father, but their mothers are different. **Feral (wild horse) mustang means the horse is not owned or touched by humans and runs wild/free across a large range, foraging for food and water without human assistance. Since many of my readers/viewers are in the USA, I often refer to my previously feral crew as ‘mustangs’ or ‘wild mustangs’. Not only for ease of understanding, but I’m hoping that the stories I share will help people feel more comfortable with adopting a BLM mustang - as there are so many living barren lives in dirt holding pens (about 50,000 of them). And they are truly wondrous creatures, often far safer than a domestic stabled horse.

Hi! I really loved this video!! She has a very strong character. She was very conscious the whole time with how she moved. I believe she knew about the herd right away but just wanted a few restful moments by herself before the big interaction. She shows a calmness the whole time and you can see how the herd gets more and more relieved even if there is still some tension. Its a big thing to have to be in such an interaction after a long trail ride. Sometimes keeping a horse seperate for a day can be helpful. Or keep them alone in a small field for a few days with someone of their own gender. You could also have put the son with her. But another mare would also have been great. Just suggestions. I had a horse who travelled 7 hours and put him in a field where he could see other horses. Then after ca 20 minutes I went and got my other horse and had them together for 10 days. Then let them in with a herd of 30. My otger knew this herd and was a guardian horse. He introduced his friend around and the cooles thing happened: They were inseperable within the group. In only 10 days a deep friendship had been made. Perhaps it is intervening but I think it is important to do so rather than letting a new horse in a big herd. They may not rest properly until after a week especially if they are high ranked horses. If they are followers or goofballs they will be okay. This new was an older very high ranked horse, I would call him a mentor horse.

Jax chose to stay with my friend Kesia, Montaro and Juno came to the ranch. And then I gradually moved the rest of the herd from the coast (down near Vancouver, BC) up to the ranch, near Vernon, BC. Ok my first time watching This channel so I'm not sure what it's about but I'm assuming this lady/people are rescuing horses from slaughter and bringing them to their beautiful property which btw is such a blessing for these deserving and majestic creatures...I commend these folks for helping them there are so few that have the resources, time, patience to do this but there is a down side to this particular instance with all of the burrs stuck in their name/tails I mean what they're doing is awesome but you can't just bring them to a property let them loose and just feed and water them and call it a day... there's hoof care, teeth care etc. That has to be done and the reason I'm assuming they're not doing any of this is the obvious matted mane and tails. God put Mane/tails on horses for a reason...1 obvious reason for tail is to swat flies but these guys can't because of the burrs matted in them not to mention the added weight having the burrs stuck in their hair and I'm sure it is very uncomfortable...I just can't imagine? The owners need to bush hgg their property frequently throughout the growing period to keep them down...I know they can't get rid of all the burrs but at least they can put a huge dent in the problem so yeah great thing they're doing but you can't do it halfway

Absolutely beautiful horses. Everyone of them are beautiful, but their tails and their man my god there’s something that’s got to be done what should be done, my lord poor animals. I believe the owner of this property they’re not really horse lovers for whatever reason they have these beautiful horses tells on horses are there for a reason they need it to flash flies and other things and that’s one of the beauties of horses is there tell them their main flowing through the wind as they run it’s a shame that they did not go through this property and cut down numbers trees if they’re all over then you cut them down, eventually you’ll have them all that’s just my opinion you cut them down or mow them down. It is such a shame that these tiles and maintenance are like that. Wow it’s a disgrace to the horses why do you laugh about some burdock birds? Why don’t you get rid of them why don’t you go through that field and mow them down keep the horses away from them bird ask there’s a way you can get rid of them. It’s terrible. It should be animal abuse for horses. That’s just absolutely terrible, beautiful horses but no Tellin man. Wow. Wow unbelievable I would’ve never brought my horse there. Be sure and watch the video I linked to there. I'm assuming from your name that you have dogs? The burrs are the worst in my long-haired LGD. I shaved him a few times, which he hated, but now he has figured out how to remove them himself! The difficult ones, he comes to us for help. But, as with the horses, they bother me a heck of a lot more than they bother him. I will be posting another video about everything I've learned from burdock in the Fall. Stay tuned!
