I used to have a Trakhener / Thoroughbred cross gelding. Wait till you ride this guy. I’ll bet he has the biggest, smoothest most impressive trot you’ve ever ridden. I clicked on this video because this looked just like a horse I rescued about 10 years back. She was a 2 year old living in some old guys back yard and he was feeding her day old bread off a truck. She was 400 pounds under weight and could barely walk. I paid him the 500 dollars he wanted and took her home, she barely made the trailer ride. After a year long rehab with her I got her on to a good road of recovery. Years later Gypsy is a 16.5 hand beautiful bay mare who turned out to be a Thoroughbred who was distantly related to Seabiscuit and Spoonbread. When her DNA showed that it made sense where she got her fight to live.

Hello spend, Reading about how you came about owning her I felt like I was going to cry. Sounds like she barely made it, but as you said after seeing her DNA RESULTS no matter how distant she is from 'The One And Only Seabiscuit' A horse known around the world as a magnificent Champion.🎉 I would love to see her Before and After Photos. I sure hope you plan on keeping till the time comes that she gets to meet her Ancestors. I had an appaloosa stallion about 20 yr at the time I got him...he looked much worse and more bone sticking up along his back and hips. You could count every rib and they stuck out like sore thumbs. It took a 1yr to put weight on him and correct his hoof wall separation. What a great horse to ride and own. He lived out his life with us till he passed. The vet estimated his age at 50 +. He had lost all his teeth except 2. We fed him a soup of ground up feed, vitamins and minerals and chopped hay. It was watered down and all he had to do was slurp it up. He never lost a pound. TLC and food never fail.

I'm glad you saved that stallion. First horse I ever rode was a dapple grey Appaloosa. I found out after the fact that dapple grey was rare for an appaloosa and probably hinted that he had some kind of mix in him. his trainer had me ride him bareback, no reins or even a blanket, as a joke because I'm a quarter native american andwas surprised at how well I did. I've loved Appaloosas for a long time but I love them more after riding Banjo.

As an owner or Arabians I was betting on some Arab in him and once you mentioned Hanoverian or Trakener you should go ahead and get his DNA testing done with both the AHA and the Hanoverian breeding registry because he is papered on both sides. An Arabian must pass an inspection to be able to breed with any warmblood. He is very well bred indeed More than likely you will also find his registered name Good luck and what a find!

@@asilah3164probably for the same reason pure bred dogs, that someone spent thousands of dollars on to get from a reputable breeder, end up in shelters or rescues. People can really suck, and just because an animal has amazing lineage doesn’t guarantee that the person who purchases them will keep them.

​@@asilah3164 Happens all the time and always has so far as I can tell. I've personally pulled horse of the year winners, rom winners, studs that once sold for millions, sons of stallions long exported back to Saudi Arabia for tens of millions, hell I missed by 1 day a Claiborne farm bred stallion who went through tattersalls once for over 3 million. And that was all prior to the 08 crash. Kentucky derby winner Ferdinand went to slaughter as well. I heard recently that the last surviving daughter of secretariat died at the rescue that saved her back in the 80s. Its been a common misconception that only bad horses end up in a bad way at a kill auction as if those horses somehow deserved it. They dont. The most common reason these horses seem to end up like this are a lack of estate planning. I do not know how many nice horses end up given away by surviving spouses and children who do not know anything nor care, and they give them away to the first person that shows up with a trailer. Not knowing or caring about horses its not like they run a well advertised sale in an industry magazine. Its notices in Facebook, a flyer at the grocery store or at the sales barn. Whoever doesn't get picked up (and they always choose to do this shit on the weekend with no notice. Ie they post a flyer on Friday they want them all gone by Saturday night) gets dumped at the closest, soonest auction. Of course they rarely think to grab papers or anything or worse deliberately leave them because either you give them 10k for the horse with papers or it goes to the kill pen without them. Yes thats very specific but I've seen that exact thing so many times I could puke. The next most common reason is divorce/bankruptcy. The courts order the herd dispersed and someone feeling some kind of way about it gets spiteful and dumps them at auction. I cant speak to now as I've been out for 15 years but those horses didn't usually immediately end up on truck but some did. No, it just got them on the path. Some hill jack with dreams of being a backyard breeder king or horse trader queen snaps them up and they go down river from there. Liquidated equine therapy and riding schools are a good honorable mention as well. Im sure someone will get butt hurt I said it but the mission of a an equine therapy center isn't the horses... its the disabled. They have a fiduciary duty to uphold and yeah sometimes they dump horses at auction to make the numbers to keep the nonprofit looking solvent. Injuries and infertility are also rans. For some people they just don't care to rehabilitate and rehome the horses they use up in the ring and broodmare band. If you can afford 20, 30k for a new warm blood whats 1 teenage, near end of career injured gelding worth? If you got that kind of cash they arent hurting to recoup that 2k he might go for as a 4h horse. They just want the stall free for the new sport horse they have coming. Pretty much every ottb has this story, blew something out and the owners just want them gone because a new prospect is coming and they need the stall.

I am hoping and praying that he didn't have an accident on the pasture as a young horse and that being the reason for him ending in a situation like that. Sometimes young colts flip over and break their withers or sustain other injuries that make them unrideable. Hopefully it was just a financial or any other issue on the former owner's side and didn't have anything to do with the horse's health. In the first case this would be like discovering a pot of gold covered and hidden in tar. I cannot wait to see his progress. 👍🐴🐞🍀 By the way, does he happen to have a chip? Just curious. 😊

I did the DNA test for my guy that came out of the kill pens in NJ. He was a beautiful palomino so everyone thought he was QH but he was reactive like a warmblood (my back ground was in Arabians so his reactivity was a non issue for me) When I got his results back he showed Hanoverian, QH, and Shetland.

The breed tests don't tell you what they're a mix of. They tell you the three most likely breeds. He could still have been a QH.

I wished I had done a DNA test on a horse I had. Skippy was bought at auction by a friend of my trainer. Clearly he had been a lesson horse and my trainer thought he may be an Appendix Quarter Horse. He was too 'lazy' for, the guy who bought him so my trainer suggested I buy him. Reliable, good natured, and bomb proof. He taught other horses to chill out. Was in the local St.Patrick's parade for years and withstood bagpipes, trailers with dancers, bands and even Mummers. I had him from age 14 (we think, never found out anything about him) till he passed away at 29. I was so lucky to get him, especially as I was 40 year old retired ballet dancer taking up riding.

Having had an Eventer who was Warmblood/Thoroughbred(common combination in Australia), I thought his "booty" was Warmblood, which gives them the explosive power to jump + collect/extend themselves for Dressage moves. Wonderful U have the patience to let your rescues really recover + blossom at their own pace. Horses aren't cheap to have lounging in fields, fattening up. Many are force fed + quickly put to work, ignoring the need for their malnourished bodies to strengthen inside + out. Especially the bones + muscle. If they're rushed into work or to be onsold, they're more likely to have issues with soundness. Some people approach it like "flipping" houses 😡, turn a quick profit. Then there's gems like u who rehab them properly. Bless u🤗🌻

Several of the European Warmblood registries accept full-blooded Arabians as breeding stallions after a rigorous inspection process because they can contribute high quality outside genes to an otherwise closed gene pool. High-quality Arabian bloodlines introduce hybrid vigor into modern warmblood lines. So it’s quite possible that Skeletor’s Arabian genes are a lot closer up then you think. Also, there is fairly recent Arabian influence in the Trakener breed registry. I have owned a Trakener. They are among the most fine-boned and petite warmblood breeds, while Hanoverians are amongst the largest Warmbloods. Skeletor looks like a Hanoverian more than he does a Trakener to me. It is plausible that he may have legitimate Arabian influences much closer up in his pedigree through either or both the Hanoverian and Trakhaner stud books than you might think. It is truly puzzling how he ended up in the dire situation that he was in. Even as a youngster, he would’ve been worth a lot of money in the USA, because Warmblood breeds are still quite scarce in this country. There are several big Warmblood breeding farms located in western Canada. I think he could’ve ended up in Montana quite easily if he originated from that area of Canada.

I think he looks more Hanoverian than Trakehner, too - he's got quite a lot of bone for a Trakehner and they do tend to be tall these days. Mind you, so do Hanoverians so he might have a lot of growing to do!

An Arabian or Shagya or Anglo Arab that passes the German Licensing Test can be accepted into WB orgs if it passes their conformational evaluations.

This horse could be a Hungarian Warmblood. The bitter root ranch is/was located in Montana -Hamilton. Once owned by the copper king Marcus Daly, his youngest daughter Harriot married Hungarian Count Anton Sigray. She and later her daughter were the last of the Daly family to run the Stock Farm. They had one daughter Margit Sigray who married Hungarian Count-Bessenyey bought a number of Hungarian bred horses from the US Calvary that were brought in By General Patton along with the importation of famous Lippizaners. Included in the horses that were brought in after World War II were the first Shagya Arabian horses called "grade Arabs" buy the US calvary as the had Arabian pedigrees but were not purebred Arabians. Also Furiouso-North Star (TB crosses) and Gidran-Anglo Arab crossbreds. These horses were bought by Margit Bessenyey at an auction at Cal- Poly Kelloge ranch when the Calvary was disbanded. She also bought a purebred Arabian (OX) in that group named Pilot ox. Margit Bred Hungarian Warmblood Crosses for the rest of her life as well as the Cooksley Family at their ranch near there. (Don't know why it printed with a line in it. It is correct) Most Hungarian horses are crossed with Arabian/Shagya bloodlines every couple generations to keep them lighter then heavy warmbloods. Hanovarians also have TB and OX crossed into their bloodlines as well as Trakehners (along with horses like Selle Francais. ) In the late 70's the Hungarian horses that the Countess bred were disbanded and sold off. Some went into Shagya Arabian Breeding and registry as they had mothers who's pedigrees traced to Babolna' the State Breeding Farm in Hungarian where Shagya and Arabians are bred. Others were sold to into private hands and were registered in the American -Hungarian Warmblood Association and registered there along with horses Bred by the Cooksley Family ranch and later where they used their horses are working stock. Over the years these horses offspring have been sold to private breeders. There are a number of Shagya breeders in that Montana area also. In most DNA a Shagya Arabian will come up in a regualar test as a purebred. Most Hungarian Warmbloods as well as German warmbloods are not exactly a "purebred" breed as they allow outside warmbloods approved for breeding to be use between the warmblood lines. I have seen hundreds of Hungarian and Eastern European warmblood breeds traveling there. I've also seen a number of the Bessenyey horses that happen to have a certain conformational factors one might recognize. That I see in your horse. First off it almost looks like a TB but not exactly. Your horse has an extremely deep (long) heart girth for the size the horse HW size is between 15 h and 16 hand are late to mature and many are dark brown bays. Hungarian horses tend to have a certain layed back shoulder conformation with large shoulder and a neck placement that your horse has. Further more many have a relatively plain flat head that sometimes looks bit long compared to the rest of it's body - meaning not Arabian like. Lastly the croup and tail placement is like some I have seen. Lastly, Since you have run the DNA on this horse. you maybe able to send it back to Texas A & M who does some of the purebred Shagya Arabian DNA as well as University of Kentucky who has a long history of running Shagya DNA and see if you can find a match. Also the Hungarian Horse Association of America has a registry in the USA. Find out who their DNA is run through and see if there is a match or a relative of your horse. Also mention the brand as some HW breeder maybe using that as a personal brand.

Wow! All that German cross-bred blood is great! Back in the day, I had an Anglo-Arab bred in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He was a 15.2 hand bay. He was trained Western, but here in Pennsylvania he became a flashy show ring hunter. Love the cross -breds.

Previously loved horses can end up in bad shape once they enter the auction market, they are hauled around a region to different sales till they get a price they want Feed is only a round bale for however many are in that pen on a feed lot. Young, weaker and horses who need a higher calorie load can loose condition quickly as there is limited access to the hay, sometimes no shelter or dry place to lay down and frequent fights

I learned so much from everyones comments. Yes, our CLEVER YOUNG LADY HAS DONE A FANTASTIC & FABULOUS rehabilitation on this horse. I wonder if she intends to keep him: since he is such a valuable horse & more extended blood work will be done. What type of training does she have in mind? Was it mentioned anywhere weather or not he is gelded or about how old he is? I can't recall if or when this info was ever released? I guessed warmblood, he looks like the horse i've been taking care of for years. He's a registered Dutch Warmblood, however he comes from a Hanovarian bloodline. He is a great level headed horse. When I was a teen, I hada chance to ride an imported Hanoverian mare, who was just wonderful. Congratulations on your rescue and have fun with the wonderful temperament. Possibly, the original owner died, and the horse was neglected and the heirs didn’t know what the had.

My guess was he's a horse, with maybe a bit of horse in there somewhere too, and probably some horse as well. I guess I was close enough. 🤷‍♀ Bad non-equestrian jokes aside, he _is_ a beautiful animal. And you did such a great job rehabbing him the way you did. As a life member of a Warmblood Association, my first impression of him said Warmblood! I thought Holstein actually but Hannovarians are much more refined than they used to be. My favourite are Trakkeners and they have a lot of Arabian blood that influenced them.

I’ve noticed how much of the horses of today are not that big. I once owned a 5-gaited saddlebred and he was 16 and 1/2 hands. My quarter/appy was over 15 hands. Love Skeletor and your attention to your horses is very admirable, and it goes without saying but I’m sure your animals are grateful. ❤

I was riding a Trakhener here in Austria for many years. They are often laughed about to be extremjy hard to handle. They are a breed that chooses one Person for a lifetime and will then die for you. Go through fire with you. But if ever anyone tries to break them they gonna trie to kill that Person. Saw it with the horse owner back then. I will never forget that horse. A true friend. Not like any other horse❤

I once knew an old couple that raced horses. They went to a race that had a young horse in a race they liked, but never really placed well. After that horse lost yet another race, these people asked if they could buy the horse. They got the horse for a song, and had their farrier out to trim the horse's feet differently. After that trimming, that horse won many races.

Wow you have a gem in the rough. I once had a trakhener/arabian gelding. He was the best horse I ever had. I was only 14-15 years old but what a show horse and he was young too. He was honest and willing and took care of me. Used to sneak down to the lake and go swimming... no clue if he had ever seen or been in water. I've owned and ridden many horses since but he will always have a special place in my heart. His name was Schwartz

I read an article on thoroughbred vs Arabian genetics. In it they explain that back when the thoroughbred was being developed, any horse that was imported from the Middle East was called an Arabian, whether it was or not. Genetically thoroughbreds don’t have a lot in common with the breed we know as Arabians, but do with Barbs and Turkoman horses.

You are correct. As a breeder and owner of an Appaloosa- Akhal Teke cross, I studied the Akhal Teke contribution to the Thoroughbred. The head of an Akhal Teke is much closer in appearance to the head of a Thoroughbred.

I have so much respect for the way you cared for this beautiful animal; I know of folks who wouldn’t have been so patient and wait two years for him to fill out and get fully healthy. They’d be training him, pushing him, throwing a saddle on him and trying to sale him off to some clueless person. He really lucked out to end up in your care. Thomas, whose registered name is Tsetserleg, is a full-blooded Trakener who competed for the USA in the last summer Olympics as well as in the 2022 World Eventing Championships in Italy. His sire was Windfall I, who won big events in America and was retired to stud in America. The same sire, had another gilded son at the last Olympics on the USA team, too. These are valuable horses. And in the United States, Trakeners are rare.

Beeing from the arabian horse world, modern day Arabians often have bigger ears as their original ancestors. Small ears are still the ideal, but as people bred for other traits primarily, the ears got bigger as a side effect. Also, the three ancestors of the Thoroughbred are still beeing debated as to which breed they really where, but not all three of them where Arabians. At least one of them was a Turkomen Horse (ancestors of the Akhal Teke, whose traits I can totally see in the TB), and the Godolphin beeing a Barb or Arabian is still not 100% clear. Probably even a mix of both, as in some countries as Morocco, both breeds often are crossed to a mixed breed, and in Beduine times very few studbooks where written. In most pictures/paintings, the Godolphin has a huge neck, which is more common in Barb Horses than Arabians. Sorry for my english, which is not my first language. 😉

Thank you for your honesty. American "Arabian" horses have been bred to caricature & their proponents can be insufferable. Every positive attribute in *every* other breed they claim as their own - ignoring hundreds of years of careful utilitarian & æsthetic results of European & other bloodlines.

Unfortunately, European and Middle Eastern countries tend to follow that bad trend now, which, imho, will be very bad for the breed in the long term, if not stopped soon. Hopefully some breeders will continue to breed responsibly, so that we will have a fallback we can come back to when needed. As i am working with Arabs, not breeding them, I can only watch and speak my opinion, but not make breeding decisions.

For some reason I saw the Arabian in him initially. I’ve seen the Egyptian lines and he looks a lot like them. Interesting mix. His trot was what caught my eye. The other horse breeds I would have never guessed. I thought maybe he’d have some quarter horse and standard bred.

I am truly delighted for you, I know nothing about horses but my background is with farm livestock but any one can see that you have truly rescued a diamond and further more you have "the touch" to help it recover both physically and mentally. Finding such a weak poor horse in the first place and then slowly bringing it along over a long time to look and apparently behave as well as it does currently does you enormous credit in my opinion. I'm so jealous. What a great lifestyle you have. Animal Services passed me with a horse in the trailer. I called about the horse and they said he needed some weight but he will be ok and is headed to a rescue. He was a stray. I live on 1/3 acre and still had to call to see the horse was alright. I love horses so much. And Skeletor is so beautiful. Congratulations on your auction pick and best of luck with him. Thank you for what you do for the horses.
