Tear down of the CS Lister, Serial # 2945513. I think it was made in 1953 but if anyone can date this engine please let me know!

I think it helps to have nice dry desert climate to help prevent too much rust forming. All the bolts come off easily without using heat or CRC spray. At one of the stations there was an old Rolls Royce left outside in the elements for at least 40 years, a friend got that engine running again without too much trouble, the electrics (Magneto ignition) were still ok so a prime of fuel and a bit of oil in the cylinders soon had the old beast up and running. Have a great day!

Hi my friend nice engine you got there I must say that you are a very fortunate man to have that head come out so quickly, At the moment I am restoring a Lister CS twin and each head took me over four hours to get out using steel wedges and pulling with a chain block!!!!!!

Thank you for that comment!!! I have spent an hour trying to get a head off (using oak wedges) and I though that something must still be connected - hence here looking for tips. Why does he want the valves to be free before taking off the head? Presumably it makes no difference to getting the head off?
@johnhili8664

@@NomadArchitecture My cylinder head was hard to take of as there was a lot of rust around the studs, It looks like water has seeped in between the studs and the head!!!! But I cannot imagine how water has got in as the nuts were very tight:-)) I had the same problem with the cylinder block took hours to remove it from the studs same problem heavily rusted studs!! When an engine had stud not working for a long time you need to take the head off to see if the valve seatings are corroded.

Hi, friend. I want to congratulate you on that incredible restoration. I bought a 27/3 Lister mod. It looks terrible, because not have the 3 valves covers and water get inside. If need some original spares parts,whar site can get it . I know it is a very difficult challenge but I want to try it. Thank you so much !!

My understanding is serial number longer than 5 digits on these is are made after 1950, the first 4 is serial number the last number is the year after 1950 (1953) the other two refers to the engine 5 = HP model ( 6 with higher rpm) 1 = single cylinder, other numbers stamped elsewhere are casting numbers.... to my knowledge.

Not wrong there, check my next video where I show the bearing, I think the bearing looks like it was starved of oil and started to rip out the white metal. The engine would not have lasted long, luckily the crankshaft journal seems ok so a new set of bearings will sort that out ok. Cheers!

It has a very long serial number, usually they were 5 digits for that period? Write to, David Edgington Lodge Wood Farm Hawkeridge Westbury Wilts BA13 4LA England He holds the construction and sales ledgers and should be able to tell when it was built, and where it was sent. I would normally advise sending a stamped self addressed envelope, but I guess that would not work from abroad! Just send the info off the brass plate.

gday, ive always been interested in finding my own station engine to restore etc. would you have any tips in finding these? i am located in adelaide but it seems almost impossible to find small station engines around SA. love the videos, always nice to watch tinkering after a hard day at work! any help would be muchly appreciated :)

emdae921 well good question I know this comment is old but I hope this helps👍 a lot of people are willing to sell you just need to find one. A lot of times there just out in the middle of nowhere so if you ever see an old abandon farm there is a pretty good chance of you finding one there. They are sometimes in abandon mines to probably pump water but these can be sketchy and often times water floods the mine and ruin them. But if you live in a city you best chances to find one are to go to shows and swap meats. I hope this helps and you find one they are pretty fun to work with☺️

I might be wrong, but I think on 1950-99 Lister engines, the first two digits are the year and month past 1950. So September 1952.

hello sir , I have olso emotion for old irons . I have only 1 slavia 12 hp now , field burned engine olso but now its runing, I love my diesel low rpm . but I dont have enough information for my engine , where can I find information for my engine? could you help to me please ? afteryour nice video I m looking too a lister here , many friends looking for me around . I found 5 hp slavia but its stuck piston , there was water inside . what you advice to me? best regards .
@rustymotor
@rustymotor 8 жыл бұрын
+Mesut Anilgan As for the engine with a stuck piston you can fill the cylinder with a light oil such as Kerosene and leave it in for a few weeks to try and loosen the piston, try and put a solid block of wood on top of the piston and use a heavy hammer to try and dislodge the Piston. Also you can use a Hydraulic pump like a portable unit with hand pump, connect a fitting in the cylinder like where the fuel injector goes and make sure the valves are closed. Pump in Hydraulic oil and the pressure should push the piston down so you then can remove it. I have not heard of your engine make but if you search the internet you might be able to find information or maybe contact a Vintage engine society as they might have technical documentation or members might have parts you need.Good luck and hope you are able to get that stuck piston moving. Kind regards, Ian

what i did when i was restoring a John Deere type e under similar circumstances was to carefully heat up the cylinder around the head multiple times with a torch while also using pb blaster (penetrating oil )to tap it out slowly

If it is indeed a 1953 it must have been such an excellent design it was kept on for some years. Certainly looks like earlier technology. But then what do I know. Just guessing here.
@rustymotor
@rustymotor 9 жыл бұрын
I believe Lister started making that CS design in the 1930s and continued to the 1970s. India still make these engines which are known as Listeroids, they are in demand from people who want to generate their own power using a long lasting, slow speed engine. I have heard of some of these engines running for up to 200,000 hours without a major service. They are a simple robust design without any fancy electronics etc. The bearings are massive, which should last a long time.

Did ya go back and salvage a valve cover from one of those blown 3.5 engines? (if it would fit)
@rustymotor
@rustymotor 9 жыл бұрын
TheFurriestOne The covers will fit most CS Listers, later model engines used a cast alloy one, I did manage to salvage a few spares in case I need parts. I did speak to the manager of the property, he told me that a former mechanic was a very strong bloke and tended to overtighten bolts and things, that was the most likely cause of the big end failures, over tensioned bolts after big end bearing replacements!
@TheFurriestOne
@TheFurriestOne 9 жыл бұрын
***** That's a shame about the mechanic, but at least you have spares! Do you think both 3.5-hp cylinders were wrecked by the big-end failure? One certainly looked to be, as the con-rod had smashed up towards that section quite violently!
@rustymotor
@rustymotor 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think they all ended up the same way, would have been a spectactular end to the engine!
@TheFurriestOne
@TheFurriestOne 9 жыл бұрын
***** Back when they were a dime a dozen, folks might've paid to see a worn-out old engine be run to destruction like that! No oil, maybe some sand for good measure, over-rev it and watch it blow! While there is a certain fascination to such a spectacle, I prefer a slightly more scientific purpose behind destructive testing- torturing bodges and jury-rigged repairs to see how they hold up! XD I wonder if there's any call for blown-up old engines as yard art around there? Might be a business opportunity! ;D

You have been given 3 dates 1953, 1944, and 1938. The correct answer is 1938 according to the engine dating list for CS diesels on oldenengine.org so the engine is 82 years old in 2020.

Did someone else claim the small horizontal diesel which was out there?
@rustymotor
@rustymotor 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, that was a small horizontal Diesel but its still in occasional use to pump water out of the bore to some cattle yards. It actually replaced that Lister which was disused after it got too hard to start. The bore was sunk into a stream bed which runs out from the hills, that spot may have been a water spring where water can be found close to the ground surface.
