The three main themes are of gypsy origin. The work opens with the orchestra in a mysterious and unsettling atmosphere. It is no coincidence that in the same year of this composition-1853-Liszt completed his famous Les Préludes, whose heroic character immediately captivated the public. The musician borrows several interesting ideas, such as the use of timpani in the introduction, a striking reminder of the March to the Scaffold from Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, one of the foundational works of symphonic romanticism, composed in 1830. Throughout the Fantasy, the piano and the orchestra exchange themes, supporting, accompanying, and sometimes battling each other. The heightened, warlike, tragic character allows for all manner of pianistic daring: scales and runs in all directions, syncopated rhythms taken at astonishing tempi... Liszt “self-paraphrases,” even in chamber-like dialogues with soloists-the violin, flute, clarinet, etc. The finale, a true folk dance, highlights the national Hungarian character. It is no longer just a symphonic arrangement of a rhapsody, but a true hymn to the glory of the Magyar people! Franz Liszt dedicated the Hungarian Fantasy to the pianist Hans von Bülow, his 22-year-old student at the time. It was premiered in Pest on June 1, 1853, with the dedicatee as soloist and Ferenc Erkel conducting the orchestra. Wunderbar!

My best regards and gratitude to CM/RR for retrieving recordings made probably 60 or 70 years ago by super musicians and super orchestras that aren't anymore and making them sound even BETTER than the originals!!!
