You can find it in PDF format here: imslp.org/wiki/Pr%C3%A4ludium_und_Fuge_%C3%BCber_den_Namen_BACH,_S.260_%28Liszt,_Franz%29 As you will see, there are two versions for organ. The most common, and the version you hear here (with a few cuts) is the second. This is a newer edition, but it isn't bad. It's missing some of Liszt's original fingering and registrations indications. For a great edition, look at Universal, but you will have to purchase it (as we all should be doing...)

He cuts quite a lot - one can work out that from the timing, which at 9 minutes is way below others. Somewhere in the middle lies Douglas Bruce, who has two versions on KZbin (with an interesting commentary in one case) and at the extreme end is Jean Guillou, who takes around 13 minutes, but embellishes the piece in his own inimitable way.

Masterful performance! perfect timing at 4:55, a place which is particularly difficulty to pull off smoothly. Among the best performances I've heard.. but why the cuts?! How can you have a Fugue without an exposition? Liszt's fugues aren't much of fugues once he finishes the expositions, so one should at least give it its due. And how can you leave out the descending 5th at the end, it's the moment that ties the whole structure together! We need that Gb, the long awaited 12th tone!!

Non è questo il problema, in Italia ci sono ottimi nterpreti... il problema è che l'Italia non ha mai valorizzato a sufficienza questi talenti. Oggi si, un po' di più... ma come si vede, poi i migliori vanno a suonare all'estero.

What is the name of the Bach prelude and fugue. I am having trouble finding it to get the sheet music. thanks
@federicosavio15389 жыл бұрын
In German, the name of this work is "Präludium und Fuge über den namen BACH". In English: "Prelude and Fugue on the theme BACH". It is the most famous organ-work composed by Franz Liszt.
@PointyTailofSatan9 жыл бұрын
In old German notation, B flat is B, and the B key is H. Thus it is possible to actually play the word "BACH". Listen from 3:06 to 3:20. That is the name Bach in musical notes, and the theme of the fugue.

The cuts ruin it, in my opinion. There are KZbin versions of the entire original. The finale is even abbreviated since the slow passage before it is cut leaving no contrast to the amazing splendor of the finale where the relentless darkness turns into ecstasy. This is a hatchet job.

It's interesting that he plays it in just over 9 minutes, whereas most other players take 11 or 12 minutes (Felix Hell requires almost 14 minutes)....

it says "extracts" in the title . this is an edited version @ 3:35
@douglasbruce49918 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have just noticed, thank you. I wonder whether someone will now come out with extracts from the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, formerly ascribed to J.S.Bach. Maybe he has a point, since my own most viewed KZbin video is the shortest of all. I take about 12 minutes over the Liszt, as my technique is not up to such virtuosity at speed...! But it was win win, since the acoustic of West Point Chapel (where it was recorded) is very resonant - by US standards extremely so!

Good Grief - Here is a professor with a new, "Modern" organ and he has to have someone help him to change combinations. I think Fox, Biggs, LaMare, Schreiner, Elasassar and Swann are all laughing their socks off. What pampered, piddly-assed, helpless babies organs have become these days. Plus they are too damned lazy to memorize their music. Key pushers you are. Organists you are not.
@Zardman710 ай бұрын
Daniel Roth would heavily disagree, as would Olivier Latry. Having registrants has been a very historical practice.
@organbuilder27210 ай бұрын
Historical - I would assume, though I should not, that means something IN THE PAST. For your information Pierre Cochereau was the one who MODERNIZED that A. C-C organ in Notre Dame with a new console filled with buttons and layers. He destroyed the original organ in the process, bringing it up to 'Today's standards of tonal architecture. Historical practice - Well, I guess we should ride horses, light the houses with candles, ship goods by windjammers and have our kids, formerly much less pansies than they are now, walk 5 miles to the local two room school. There is no longer a need for reqistrants unless someone is playing an unmodified tracker organ. For your information. most of them have been given electric stop actions so these incompetent, lazy show-offs can have 128 "Levels" for bragging rights. They still don't know how to register an organ by hand, even on a modern draw-knob console. They can't even turn pages by themselves. They need "Laptops" to read the music. What is historic about that, pray tell? Do not support incompetence. There are few organists alive who can really "Play" an organ, modern or historic. I have nothing but contempt for them and the trash noise they make as a substitute for music. I am of and from the Old School and have worked with several of the most famous organists in the USA. I know what they could do and I know what the modern crop of wanna-be's can't do. There are exception, like Brown, Heindle, Jan ??? and some of the Old Timers, Like Roth, Latry, Dubois, Biggs I don't wants debates like you enjoy. You are not old enough to know the greatest organists of the past and what they could do with even the largest organs with or without functional combination actions. Likely you little of the development of organ, key and combination actions over the last 130 years.@@Zardman7
