He already knew his tremolos, leaps and thirds at the age of 12, I love that so much, that's somehow quite funny, because he will use these techniques all his life and seems to have a special favor for them! :) One uses the techniques that fit his hands the best most often I think, even in compositions maybe... Also one has to mention, he wrote that effects at the age of 12 in the 19th century! He was more than a normal Wunderkind for that! There are 12 year olds today who can play that... But don't discover that for themselves at this age! Quite extraordinary if you ask me! Once again, thanks for your upload and texts, love it!!!

Un Liszt de 12 ans nous en met plein la vue et l’ouïe dans ces variations d’Ermione de Rossini. Quelle découverte si bien restituée par la virtuose Hug!

Thank god for this channel. Thank you so much for uploading all of this. I never would have known about his smaller, more delicate and interesting works. Aside from being a prolific composer himself, he embedded a touch of everything like counterpoint, classisism, romanticism, Impressionism, etc. Thank you so much. You have really changed my perspective on this composer.

I think this is quite impressive for something written by a 12-year-old, actually better IMO than the stuff Beethoven and Schubert were writing at that age, and better written for the piano which suggests that Liszt already had the technique to play something like this, whereas in Beethoven's early piano pieces there are some virtuoso passages that are ungratefully written which I suspect Beethoven couldn't play and put them in for decorative purposes assuming pianists better than him would be able to. You described its merits well. When I first came across this work, after the dismissive comments made about Liszt's early music by Harold C. Schonberg and Charles Rosen, I wasn't expecting much, but within its limitations it's a very pleasant and well-constructed piece and not totally devoid of originality (note the harmonic surprises in Var 3 and the drama of the minor key variation which look forward to the mature Liszt). True, it's clearly written by a child, but that's part of its charm - in this piece Liszt seems aware of his limitations and isn't straining to create something big beyond his capabilities, like in his weaker pieces of the time such as Don Sanche and the Rondo di Bravura.

I’m so glad you did this! I sequenced it for midi, and while it sounded great, it doesn’t compare to an actual human performance. I can’t wrap my head around how Liszt wrote this when he was 12! I was struggling with Beethoven’s 20th sonata when I was 12, lol

How many of you cannot believe this was written by Liszt when he was 12 despite being the fact being true? I'm sure they're many, he was quite a genius!

OK -- here's a mystery. The opera Ermione was withdrawn after only seven performances in Naples, and the score was never seen again until around 100 years after Rossini died. Liszt was only 8 when it was performed. How did he get the score for the aria he uses for his variations as a 12 year old boy? This is something for musicologists to dig up! According to Wikipedia, the opera was a failure because it didn't have any secco recitatives and was more or less through composed. Rossini kept the manuscript but, when asked about it, said it would never again be performed while he was alive. He said it was his little Italian "William Tell".

It may sound terrific but Liszt is the kind of dude who can keep in mind a melody and its harmonics for a very long time after having heard it only once or twice. Plus the melody is quite simple, all the rest is a bunch of Lisztean technical demonstrations. So I'm not sure of this version which is hypothetical but I'm also not so surprised by the timeline you exposed
