Gouache is so much fun to play with. Being able to lay down opaque layers, blend, and lay down transparent washes with the same medium is really user friendly. It’s like oil paint and watercolor had a baby, and gave us the best of both worlds

Like for real! You won't believe me that gouache cured my depression and is the reason I am alive right now. (I was too unhappy in life) One day I just grabbed the gouache paints lying around and I painted. I also am not a fan of the texture of acrylic. Even though it dries fast, I have trouble seeing if it's still wet, since it's still shiny when dried. Also, may I suggest a video on how to properly dispose paint water? I feel like it's a topic that isn't talked about much, since it's not a very glamorous topic.

A 90 minute doodle is an understatement you truly know what art means, art is something unique there is no perfect and the amazing thing is that it's far from accurate skin color but you can see how it comes together to have that imperfect touch is quite a wonderful skill to have

A few things that have helped me in the past, not just for gouache but painting in general: 1. If you're using a reference, and it's in color, I'd recommend putting it in greyscale. This way you're focusing on the values and not just what colors you "should use" 2. Test your color palette on a scrap piece of paper, take a picture of it, and then put that into grayscale. I like to pick a shadow, midtone, and highlight as my 3 colors. I often find it hard to tell what inherent value a color has, obviously blue is darker than yellow but still. This way before I start painting I know how dark my darks are and vice versa. 3. This one's random but to preface, everytime I start a painting I want to try something different and I'm always scared to try it out. So just make a few thumbnail sketches and try out a few things and if you don't like it then just don't do it when you do the final piece. This might just be me but I'm weird like that lol.

I just wanted to say that after seeing your short where you said how you see skin tones and colors others don’t, that even though I can’t see all the blues and greens you do I think it’s so beautiful that you can see all these colors in people. ❤️ Thank you so much for sharing your worldview in your art and inspiring people. I’ve been following you for the last few years and my art has immensely improved, so thank you for everything.

I was gifted a gouache himi palette for my birthday, im predominatly a digital artist and this video helped me a ton. I was really intimidated by the forgein medium, but now I feel confident to go try it out and experiment! I think funnily enough, the way I layer my digital illustrations will translate well to how gouache lets itself be layered, like you showed off in the video. Base, shadings, light.... gouache lets you layer even lights on darks, which is awesome. Thank you for this awesome video!

This is a cool video - thanks for the comments and demo! I went from pencil/pen cartooning to digital art, to digital painting, and doing that got me to try acrylics, then more recently, a little watercolor. This looks awesome, somewhere in the middle of those which is what I think I am chasing.

Wonderful video! I’ve chosen gouache as my medium for the reasons you stated, and for its versatility with other mediums. I can underpaint with watercolor, marker, chalk and alcohol, along with gouache. I can dry brush gouache, float layers, double load colors (and triple load). Reactivating gouache can be tricky, but that you can is a boon. I really love the creamy texture and matte finish. It’s like painting with velvet. Plus, it’s non toxic, has no harsh smell, and easy to clean up.

The way you color is so magical. The way you take a large variety of colors and slap them together to make a beautifully unique, yet cohesive piece is amazing. My favorite part is that it isn't magic at all. It's an accumulation of practice and skills to make any piece in any medium stunning - Also, the gloss thing speaks to me the more I think of it. It makes me think of posters or books that have a gloss that is a bit tacky(?) so if you rub it too hard it creates an awful squeak/rubbing sensation.

Right now I'm using gouache to paint animals for my final piece for year 12 and it's so fun. It's gonna be like one of those flip books where you can mix and match animals- BUT! There isn't a full set of an animal. You could have a fish's head, a gorilla's arms and a horse's tail, but not a full fish. It's gonna look so cool when I'm done. I like how gouache is very forgiving and opaque. My favourite part is when my brush is just dry enough so I can go in and add texture with my brushstrokes.

Gouache is my favorite! And I've been learning how to mix media lately. I like to start with a layer of watercolor, then add gouache, and then go in areas and soften them with soft pastels or define areas with dip pens and ink. I will also start with a pale blue pencil and not erase it, and I love the character it gives when you can subtly still see it at the end.
