This video was reMARKERble as always! How much of an impact does the base colour have on the piece overall? Like how different would Mr T be if you had started with a yellow base or something? Finding the right colours is probably a skill that will develop with practice. Still, watching how you layer everything and seeing it come together feels so magical! Ohu-who knew markers could be so amazing?!

Thank you for saying that the quality of materials isn’t important. A lot of youtube artists use custom brushes and full sets of copic markers and it makes young artists think thats the only way to draw

Wow! This video shows just how much to trust the process. The deep pinks and lavender seem so out there, but once you get layering and really start mixing all the different colors you use, it comes together to make a beautiful, rich piece. I also never thought about how versatile markers being transparent is. Its just something I never thought of, and it's a really helpful way to look at it. Since it is transparent, i could possibly change things up or fix mistakes since the color isnt that deep yet. Thanks for the helpful advice!

Markers are my personal medium of choice, so you posted this at the perfect time! I think I’ve gotten stuck in the ways I use them, and this gave me a lot of ideas! Also- during the entire layering process I kept thinking “that looks way too red” but then I compared the end product to the reference photo and saw it was a near-perfect match! You inspire me so much to continue as an artist, thank you!

Pigment-based or India Ink-based markers from companies such as Staedtler and Faber-Castell don’t actually bleed through the page. They are also more lightfast and archival than alcohol dye-based markers, which fade over time.
@Ali-mv3jc7 ай бұрын
I use markers occasionally, I would advise to scan or photograph each artwork when it's finished. So even when it fades you can still see your progress and previous pieces!

I recognised Mr T straight away 😃 He came to my work 15 years ago (big corporate company and he was there for Snickers). I asked him a question and his answer was super weird 😂 I asked as a joke if he has trouble going through airport security with all his chains and he said since hurricane Katrina he doesn't feel comfortable wearing real stuff, so this all fake. I still don't know what HK has to do with it all 😂 I love alcohol markers although I need to learn more about them. I've only used them on line work like colouring page. I want to learn how to use them to their full potential, since they are beautiful and can create amazing art. And thank you for saying there is no right or wrong way to use tools. I hate people that tell others they are using something wrong.

this turned out awesome, great work scott. Nice to see long form videos too in my opinion! I had a question, when layering markers over the initial graphite ( and maybe over the coloured pencils later on) do you find it can damage and discolor your marker tips? Also does it make a difference whether you use wax based or oil based pencil colours for this method? thanks
@ajacobs88868 ай бұрын
Dude this is amazing. The way the colors changed from all these bright saturated colors in the beginning to skin color is magic. And the way the pencils interacted with the markers was so cool. I don't really like drawing with markers, but I have some old (really cheap) ones laying around and I might give it a try again. Thank you so much!

I normally work with digital art programs, but I have been trying to get out of the digital mindset and back into traditional mindset. And hearing you say "there's no rules" in regards to mixing mediums together, kinda helps ALOT in pushing past what is often taught in Art classes. Nowadays, art teachers force the "Your art needs to tell a story" and "You can only use one medium during one artwork" things and deduct points/marks if you go against such teachings. Which often causes burnout and decreases creativity by a long shot... It's sad. Which is why I chose to work digitally instead... It's hard to unlearn. So thanks for uploading and saying the things you've said. It means alot!

The way you build up so many layers of colors that all blend together so well and give so much depth is amazing. I hope I can gain your level of confidence with color with more practice. Because of my budget I’ve only been able to afford regular Crayola Supertips, and I kind of sucked at using them at first. Then I played around with a Pentel Aquabrush one of my professors gave me and tried using it as a blending tool. After some more practice I’ve gotten really solid results. The shape of the tips lets me get the control and precision of colored pencils with the smoothness and wide strokes of markers, and the inks can work a lot like watercolor if you add lots of water to spread it out

what an amazing picture you made in the end. another thing to keep in mind is that layering is only possible on really good paper made for things like watercolour and markers, or else it can start to pill and break down. this doesn’t always happen, and there are things you can do to avoid it, but it’s something to keep in mind.

However, I am a young person who works at a zoo, and on Wednesday it was announced that our guinea turaco’s official name is now “Mr. T, and if you don’t know who that is … none of you know who that is. We’re old.” I jokingly thought Mr. T when you said “you may or may not know who I’m sketching.” AND IT ACTUALLY IS HIM. What a fun coincidence.

Hey Scott! Love your shorts and recently started watching your videos. I feel like what I love about videos is that occasionally I see the artists face and them talking to me. I feel like there is a bit of connection I'm missing. I want to see you explain your steps and then see your process. Take your time, use music and cuts to add progress. Art youtubers 10Hundered and Nerdforge kill it with long-form 10/10 would recommend them as reference points. Also talk slower in long videos! I like your art because the pieces feel so calm but your longform videos feel so loud. Totally get it if that's not your vibe but I figured I'd recommend it. Anyways I'm an avid long form watcher now regardless of all that. Please take it as constructive. Your videos are great and I just figured some feedback might be useful to grow your long-form audience. Love this piece

I tried markers for Inktober and did not like them. I later made a swatch chart and found out there really weren't any midtones in the set of 72 markers that I had. Just very strong contrasts of light and heavily saturated colors. I think your technique of multilayering markers and pencils confirms for me the fact that building midtones in markers might be a ton of effort. I think the medium looks amazing though in comics.
