What's a TL;DR to do this, and does it work online (private lobbies with friends, would not do this in public matches). Looks super fun, I'm guessing you most likely need some kind of device to pull the key off of the amiibo to upload then edit and overwrite it on the amiibo?

You can't take it into arenas. Nintendo won't let you cause it apparently looks at the amiibo stats and abilities. You don't need anything special, just a phone that has a nfc scanner which most phone have now.
