Oh my goodness! I am with many of the other commenters in this thread. Thank you SO much for explaining this all so well! I am in phase two of my lit-review and had NO earthly idea what I was doing even though the school had gave us a plethora of articles and chapters to read. @peakdavid7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the love and the good words. Are you a native speaker of English? Because you sure do write like one.
@Christiez19857 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words :) Nope, in Greece, we learn the English language from age 7 till we finish our first degrees and we engage with it quite many hours each week. In my field, International Relations, fluency in English is necessary. But I have also done two MAs at the University of Nottingham, UK and my language skills have improved significantly thanks to my courses. The hardest part for me has been to manage all this volume of academic literature in a foreign language, plus the challenge to adapt to the foreign learning culture in general.

Recently I'm working on a research paper, but thanks to you is a lot clearer now what I should write on the literature review section. Hi David, thanks for posting this wonderful video. My assumption on literature review prior to watching this video was that LR is written as a background information for the readers about the narrow topic I'm writing. Also, I thought that I should structure my LR in such a way that it provides a 'space' for my chosen topic. My literature review now is composed of concepts arranged chronologically, from broad to narrow, backed up by sources pointing to a gap which leads to the significance of my study. Based on your video, mine looks like the 'term-paper' examples you showed.
@peakdavid8 жыл бұрын
Levi--it's clear by how you described your "new" LR that you know exactly what to do, especially about carving out a research space for the body of your paper. Congrats!
@levicruz26098 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Thanks for replying. What I actually meant was, at the moment, my lit review isn't yet a presentation of the current status of research on my topic. It's structured like the term paper outline you described because I wrote it to explain the key concepts, strung together to prove a point with arguments (backed up by sources), i.e to lead to the significance of my study. My question is-- is this structure incompatible with your outline where you said i should discuss the strength and weaknesses of what authors wrote about the topic?

Thank you so much for your videos. It helped alot! Emma, in a literature review, you are supposed to use mainly your own words in summarize the sources, point out the connections between them, and offer your own consideration of their importance. Thanks Prof. Taylor. It's quite clear and helpful. You're stating that the major function of a review is about the status of the topic in terms of research,. This left me wondering about another probable function of the review, namely clarifying concepts realting to the topic of research that would help the reader later better comprehend discussions around that topic. For instance, I'm working on the evaluation of a competency-based syllabus, dont you think that i should explain this teaching approach clearly to readers, rather than simply limiting myself to the preceding evaluative studies ?
@peakdavid9 жыл бұрын
anouar aissat I suppose you could put such an explanation in the introduction to your literature review, if the lit review is a stand-alone document. If the lit review is part of a larger paper or project, the explanation would come in the introduction.

thank you you really helped me understand the literature review concept. i wanted to write a literature review on the impact of Knowledge management and i narrow it down to the medical sector. i have on question if i want to use this subject as my postgraduate essay can i keep the same title,the same area and literature review for my paper.need advise. thank you David.
@peakdavid10 жыл бұрын
Nancy--It's a good idea to find an area where you specialize. By the time you get to the postgraduate level and write a literature review, even if you revisit this topic, the literature will have changed and certainly the professor's requirements will have changed. But you will always be able to build on what you did before--hopefully.

Hi David. Thanks a lot for all your tutorials! Uhm...can you do a quick one on writing the "Methodology" section of a dissertation, preferably for a proof of concept dissertation. Thanks again.

Mario, that may be a little too narrow for my students, but congratulations on making it to the dissertation stage of your graduate work!

How many is always an important question. First, what guidelines has your teacher given you? Are you able to look at the finished work of Honours students who have gone before you? My suggestion is to explore those two avenues to get an answer more relevant to your field and school and Honours adviser.

I wish I watched your video first before writing my lit review, now it made more sense to me. I enjoyed watching your video, can you please tell me how to create videos like that? It is fun to watch and very interactive. Thanks.

+Cherie Diaz I record myself against a green screen and pretend to be interacting with what is behind me. Then software takes out the green screen and puts in whatever you want as a background. Search on "green screen compositing"

***** Anything is possible if a good writer makes it work. However, I would advise against it unless pre-approved by your professor. Good luck and thanks for the question.

So how to organise a systematic review over a topic? And, more specifically, how to organize the literature review in a systematic review? does the same rules apply and there is no difference in these two different literature review? I am so confused right now
@AnaGarcia-yh5yy10 жыл бұрын
This is the first time doing a literature review and I was completely confused. Your videos truly helped me understand what it is that I need to look for. I just don't know were to look for good databases. My topic is the effects of stress in fetal development. Any suggestions?

Go to your school's library and search in EBSCO Host's Academic Premier database.

Very nice tutorial, good explanations. One question to all: How many references should I use for a dissertation document? How do I know the state of art is completed?
@peakdavid9 жыл бұрын
jv071 Great question. I'll take a shot. Your disseration adviser or committee should have given you guidelines that cover this question. If not, simply look in your school's library for past successful dissertations in your field. How did these past students answer your question at your school? What is the average number they used?

thanks for your reply..i have problem with theoretical framework if you can tell me how to relate my research with a theory..thanks
@peakdavid8 жыл бұрын
What theoretical frameworks have you been given to choose from?
@wisalmuhammad33858 жыл бұрын
Actually i am working on student's political participation, my major is sociology, and i adopt bourdieu 's theory of habitus but if you can just explain how we relate our research to theory because i am not very good at it, and just want to know how do we do this..
@peakdavid8 жыл бұрын
OK, I'll post a video on that. Basically here is what you do: (1) Provide a general/historical overview of Boudieu's theory. (2) Pick out one specific element of the theory, state it clearly, then show how it explains an element of student political participation (why students did what they did or how they did what they did. (3) Pick out a second element of Bourdieu's theory and show how it explains something else you found out about student's political participation. It's that simple.
