Scrap Silver Refining (Part 2) Filtration

We started with a small batch of misc junk silver, and digested it all into solution in Part 1. In this video we filter our solution to remove particulates. In Part 3 we'll drop the silver out of solution using copper, and rinse the cemented silver to prepare it to be melted into metallic shot.
Caution! Do not attempt this experiment without the proper training and safety equipment.

Hello, great series. Re-watching your methods, lots for me to learn. The red powder is Silver Chromate. You are dealing with sterling, plated and others, Potassium Chromate is widely used on those, so: K2CrO4 + 2AgNO3 → Ag2CrO4 + 2KNO3 Soluble in water, messy to deal with. Been doing exactly this myself, hoarded 7-8 lbs of scrap silver. Yielded a lot of cement silver, some batches left Ag2CrO4 over. Carefully filtered and saved. Now that I have identified, popped the saved filters in distilled water with bits of Nitric, it disappears. Filtered, dropped Cu strips, more cement Ag to the batch. Let me know your thoughts.

Great video! What is the mesh layer under your qualitative filter? Is it there to prevent blowouts?

Glad you enjoyed the vid! Thanks for watching. I was using a mesh screen under the filter for some time to help with keeping the filter from clogging up. However it occasionally lead to other issues and I discontinued using it.

Hi David! Thanks for subscribing!! I save all the filters and reprocess them in bunches. There are trace elements of silver, gold, and platinum group metals hiding in there. Tips... safety first, don't do any of these experiments without the proper ventilation and ppe. Read Hoke's book. Study the lessons taught on the goldrefiningforum.com Just stay safe! :)

Looks like a good application for a charmin plug, since you have a vacuum pump. May have got the result in one pass. Not that I have ever done this stuff; just watched the vids of others.

30 minutes long video about filtration... Lesson learned - there is nothing like beaker too big or too many filtrations, buy bigger Büchner...
