The game was so much simpler back then, maybe 2 or 3 summons in a turn and you could go +3 or 4 at most in a lot of turns no spam your hand for 3-4 negates and plus 10 cards. The contrast between the two brackets is so noticeable when both decks just set cards for a turn your like "oh that's it"? Good old boomer yugioh.

You definitely don't remember the same game as I do then, there was still plenty of insanity in combo decks--2012 windups both pre and post hunter's ban, inzektors, infernity pre soul charge, mermail in basically any format it existed in, as well as others I'm forgetting. While things weren't quite as consistent and easy to access as they are in modern decks, there was still a ton of powerful 5+ summon decks for many years.

modern control mirrors have low special summon counts & a great deal of interaction, & modern control decks force the opponent to play their game, so the opponent being able to summon a dozen times a turn won't mean that they're going to unless they lose to traps so the control decks cut handtraps & just destroy boards instead of stopping them, duels are still sharper & topdecking is still less relevant, but the modern game isn't exclusively mass summons & turn 1 wins.

Having the decks divided by era was a smart thing to do since the old school days does have a lot of fun decks to watch at their prime. Next match up, the Cards of Safe Return is a force to to any old school deck cause draw power is huge especially with a deck that constantly reborns monsters thanks to Mezukii. So my bets are on Zombies especially after watching how they performed in previous formats.

I think that setting it to pre/post 2014 for non tier 0 decks is a good solution, since outside of a few decks the top decks were mostly good in their own formats and couldn't compare to modern stuff.

I can see Spellbooks taking a Match off everything in Group H if they can go 1st. The major distinction between the brackets is that in the 2014+ bracket the die roll pretty much decides the match, besides of course powercreep at its peak from 2015 onwards.

As a Kid / Teen I was kinda shocked after seeing those card prices from this tournament pack (which was the very 1st one) in Card Master, especially the $300 - $400 for a copy of mechanic hunter Royal Decree was a $40 - $50 card As I remember some of the cards from the very 1st tournament pack got reprinted either in Dark Beginning 2 or in the 1st wave of Structure Decks

Baboon burn is like the one fair deck in every year's tournament full of unfair decks. We all want to see it sneak some wins in, but aren't surprised when it doesn't. It seems every other deck has a handful of "draw these and you're massively ahead" cards that steal wins while baburn just... doesn't really.

I miss the control/tribute summon era of yugioh so much. I’ve been playing for years, and I was a big fan of combo decks back in 2016-17 during the pendulum zoo eras. But nowadays every deck ends on the same group of boss monsters for thirty negates. There just isn’t any creativity lately. I think that’s why I liked strikers. Their play style was very enjoyable imo
